Talking points: On Mayo, b-ball defense, another offensive coordinator candidate, and sight-seeing

Jerod Mayo says that reports that he's already decided to forego his senior season and enter the NFL draft are erroneous. "That's false, completely false," says Mayo. "I don't even know myself what I'm going to do. I'm pretty neutral right now. I'm just worried about Wisconsin." Coach Fulmer plans to go home with Mayo following the Outback Bowl to talk about the pros and cons of leaving early. Mel Kiper says that Mayo could be one of the first three linebackers to go in the draft. Cons? For me, lots. For him, let me get back to you.
The basketball Vols beat Gonzaga yesterday 82-72 mostly with defense, but JaJuan Smith's 18 points, Prince's 12, and Lofton and Tyler Smith's 11 each didn't hurt. Ramar Smith and Chism were also both in double figures. The SEC season starts January 9.
Scout.com has made a decent case for the hiring of Kippy Brown as Tennessee's next offensive coordinator. Unfortunately, it appears that Brown'll be offered the OC position with the Detroit Lions and won't be coming to Rocky Top. Oh, and the history teacher won't be coming, either. On to the next name: Frank Cignetti.
I've been pretty pessimistic about the Vols' chances against Wisconsin in the Outback Bowl, but here's something positive: because they were here last year, they presumably won't spend as much time sight-seeing and stuff. More time for football. That and a bad memory from last year may just get them focused like they need to be. Hey, it's something.

What about Dave Barrone, the offensive Coordinator for the Saints who has been mentioned as well. As far as a pro coach goes, that is the guy whom I would have most interest in. However, if he is not avaliable, I would want to stay consistient on the college level, since we are seeing a transition to the spread offense and so on. With that being said, I really would not have a problem at all with Taylor being named the OC, he knows this system, and probably knows what tweaks could be done in order to make it better. Plus, we would still have his awesome recruiting ability. I think that is a good situation to have, and one that would allow for taylor and the offense to grow and develop into a powerhouse again.
