tOSU's SB Nation's blog, Around the Oval, posted an interesting article regarding Mike Conley Sr.'s new business venture. While this is essentially a "non-story" (since Sr. claims that Oden, Mike Jr., Cook, et. al have been off-limits) it brought out mixed emotions for me, from extreme outrage and disgust to happiness for the Conley family. Let me try to explain.
Here we have an individual who has established a management group for the express purpose of exploiting a 19 yr old kid (tOSU's Greg Oden) and his buddies in the name of beaucoup dollars. Yes, it is just a product of the system that's been created, but something about that is creepy as all get out. It's up there in the creepy-ranks of HS scouting, college recruiting, and professional drafting of athletes. (Perhaps I have this sentiment due to jealousy that I'm not the beneficiary of such a big return of "easy money" given the nominal amount of work required for such big return?)
On the other extreme hand, if I put myself into Oden's big shoes (no way they'd fit!) who else would I rather pay to help "manage" my trip through the rough and often unnavigable waters of professional athletic contracts (from a rookie perspective) than a good friend and former coach that I trust and deeply respect? I'd be horrified at shelling out a ton of money to an essenial stranger, even if his name was Drew Rosenhaus or Jerry Maguire! If I'm loaded with cash and need to rely on the knowledge and know-how of a 2nd party, I'd prefer to distribute it to my friends and family for the betterment of everybody involved (you scratch my back and I'll scratch yours).
My point: well, I don't really have one. But I do know that whoever winds up managing Big Greg will be shouting "SHOW ME THE MUN-NAY!!!"
