Closing the Book on Cal

I must say, it's a little dissapointing to see everyone say Tennessee got "blown out" or "dismantled" when in reality, Cal had two big plays that completly changed the game.  The defensive touchdown, and of course, D-Jack's huge return (why we kicked to him when Colquitt had quad injury, I don't know).  Take away those two plays, and it's 31-31.

The offense looked good, not great, but good.  We need a deep threat and need to stop throwing swing passes to Foster on 3-10.  For a moment I thought Randy Sanders was phoning in plays from Lexington.  Ainge completed over 30 passes but didn't even have 300 yards, I think that says a lot.

The defense got beat quite a few times and was missing tackles, but I think we all knew Cal had an explosive offense.  Also, D-Jack didn't have too many catches or yards and their "All-Conference" tight end Craig Stevens didn't do much either.  Hawkins killed us!  Forsett ran so well because our defense was spread out so much by the receivers and the safties could not afford to let them get deep.  On the positive, the defense came up with some big stops later in the game to get the offense the ball back, so that was encouraging sight.

All of the young players show promise but need a lot of work.  X needs to sit out this week and heal up for Florida, because they can score.  And can somebody get open DEEP!  Briscoe, Taylor, Vinson, ANYBODY!

Cal looked pretty good and has the look of a team that can beat USC, especially since they play in Berkeley this year.  So maybe by season's end this loss won't look so bad. (Of course now Cal will go lose to Colorado State)

All in all it was dissapointing, but i look at it this way:  I would rather beat Florida than Cal.  Beat So. Miss this week and Florida the next, and we'll be fine, sqaure, all straight.  Losing sucks, but losing conference games really hurts.

defense
Our defense is reminiscent of the 90 teams when peyton was around. We had no pass rush on Longshore and 0 and I will reiterate zero sacks!!!! The secondary lost everyone but hefney. Why dont we go to a 3-4 defense and utilize our great linebackers? I think it would be a hell of a season if we lost to Florida and beat everyone else. I think that is almost realistic if we don't hacve any key injuries and get a little lucky.

No Respect?
It doesn't warrant its own journal entry, so I'll just tag it on here as part of the closing of the Cal book.

I've been blog-hopping this Tuesday morning and am quite suprised to see that many BlogPoll balots have Tennessee out of the top 25.  So let me get this straight...Tennessee-the ONLY ranked team to play another (higher) ranked opponent, on the road, across the country, looses in what was essentially a shoot-out, drops out?!  What gives?!  Not computing in my head.  Obviously, individual ballots are pure opinion and the folks are entitled to vote as they may, but the double standards and/or flawed logic astound me.

Agreed!
Like I stated in the journal, the words dismatled, embarrassed, and spanked seem to be popping up a lot on the web.  The Vol offense played the Cal offense even!  Our defense is very green in the secondary and along the line.  Nobody says anything bad about an experienced and fired up Cal defense giving up 31 points to a team that has ZERO players that can change a game like we had last year (Cal has DeSean Jackson, nuff said).  Ainge simply marched the Vols up and down the field with no Coker, Cottam, or big plays.  And really we should have had more points if not for the brain fart we had for 4 consecutive downs inside the Cal 5.

Hey, at least we didn't lose to App State and we can still win the conference!

Do they have Mayo in Berkeley? ...well they're about to get a taste! #7 Jerod Mayo

I am worried about the defense though
The D-line looked soft, which was disappointing.
