....It's gonna

be okay!!!! I was going to do the whole orange shirt, khaki shorts thing today but I’m ditching the pants for the GREEN ATHLETIC SHORTS!!! My new lucky shorts!!!

Why lucky you ask?

Because A. they are green and B. I found a ten dollar bill in them this morning in the laundry!!!

HECK FIRE YES! I will rock these green shorts no matter how awkward its going to be watching the game with other much more nicely attired orange people. I don’t care if they think I look like I just rolled out of bed. Its because of these green shorts, that we are goin to rock a DUBBYA in Athens!

It’s all connected, my friends…..

Someday we'll look back on this and plow into a parked car.

by MeytonPanning on Oct 11, 2008 1:18 PM EDT reply actions

I shaved the night before our 3 losses. I did not shave the night before our two wins. I did not shave last night.

Between your shorts and my 5 o’clock shadow, I’m pretty sure we can already consider this game won.

Best Laundry Day Ever
It’s a sign!!!!!!

Awkward
Seriously though. It’s time to put your pants back on…

Someday we'll look back on this and plow into a parked car.

So are you making the dog wear the shorts?

Our alumni association...

has rented out the ESPN Zone at Disneyland for the game. This is somehow gonna end in disaster, but I’m going anyhow. GOVAWLS!!

Not usually superstitious, but foregoing the solid orange growling Smokey for a subdued navy blue with orange lettering. Haven’t found any money yet in the seams, though.

Do what UCLA did to us.

Hang in the game during the first half – don’t let it get out of hand early.

Hold TOP in the second half and have the game decided at the end.

It's actually refreshingly fun

As I’m trying to stay objective. Really lets you appreciate the way Georgia is mostly working us over. Huge INT just there, though. The Pass Interference call might not be the play of the game, after all. It was still a horrible call.

by bobo_the_vol on Oct 11, 2008 4:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Let's see . . .

. . . as bad as it seems, we’re only down two scores. If there was any reason to think our offense could move the ball, we’d be okay.

Why did Lucas Taylor run a 3 yard route when we needed 7 yards?

It’s a math problem. 3 < 7.

Deferring is for p_ssies. Make a decision!

by wvvol on Oct 11, 2008 4:30 PM EDT reply actions

The logic behind a short route on a 3rd down:

The defense is most likely in a zone where the DBs are stacked around the 1st-down marker. If you throw past the 1st-down line, it’s easier for them to intercept. If you throw just a little bit short, the odds of an interception drop to nearly zero. Then you’re just hoping that the receiver has enough space to make up the rest of the difference.

That’s the logic, whether you agree or disagree.

by David Hooper on Oct 11, 2008 4:32 PM EDT up reply actions

Alternatively

He was the checkdown and the primary / secondary receivers were covered.

by Chris Pendley on Oct 11, 2008 4:33 PM EDT up reply actions

True.

Even with that, it’s the reason why you don’t send every single receiver past the 1st-down line.

by David Hooper on Oct 11, 2008 4:34 PM EDT up reply actions

None of our receivers should run more than 3 yards because that’s the amount of time we have to throw.

by highlifeman on Oct 11, 2008 4:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Halftime stats

Are in the body of the post above. Comments don’t like tables.

Tennessee’s got the advantage in turnovers.

Go Vols!

Probably won't open another thread for the second half

If it starts lagging for anyone, let me know, and I’ll start another, but let’s ride this one for awhile.

Go Vols!

Anyone think UGA

would’ve scored if we hadn’t called a timeout? I can justify it, but my gut tells me Richt was banking on it.

by ChattVol on Oct 11, 2008 5:28 PM EDT reply actions

Was wondering about that myself

First thought was that we shouldn’t have called it, but dismissed that as hindsight. Figured it was a good call at the time. Would have been great to get the ball back and get another score. Momentum would have been great.

That, of course, ignores our inability to stop an opponent on third down, though.

Go Vols!

when I say "wondering" I mean

wondering whether we should have called the timeout.

by Joel Hollingsworth on Oct 11, 2008 5:31 PM EDT up reply actions

I wasn't the biggest fan of the call

But I can’ t think that Richt was expecting the Vols to make the TO call.

by Chris Pendley on Oct 11, 2008 5:31 PM EDT up reply actions

If they had scored one or two plays later, maybe, but there were too many plays between the timeout and the TD.

Penn Wagers, however, might have been banking on it. Literally.

Recap shot of Mark Richt on the sidelines: Clap Clap Clap

by David Hooper on Oct 11, 2008 5:31 PM EDT reply actions

Halftime Thoughts:

Tennessee gave up 211 yards passing. Their coverage has left men wide open several times. When Georgia has to work for their hards vs UT, tennessee has done good. Asides from the 53 yard bomb by Stephens, Tennessee has 56 yards of offense. That’s horrible, and Georgia has 19 minutes of ball control. Tennessee has played bad, I want to say that first off. But on that final drive I think the Refs really helped out Georgia. A great hit was negated by a bad call. A really good hit, the kind of hit that makes your team play better.

Key Plays:
On 3rd down, 37 yard screen pass from Stafford to the FB Shaun Chapas. It was a great call and a horrible job by Tennessee. A 1 yard plunge next play by Sutherland put Georgia up 7-0.

3rd down and 7, a horrible Pass Interference call by the refs negated great coverage by the Vols and let Georgia continue their drive.

That being said .. Georgia would go from their 23 to Tennessee’s 13. Then:
Interception Robert Ayers. Georgia was driving, looking to go up by 3 scores. A bad decision by Stafford to throw and a great call by Chavis mixing the blitz with the step-back. Georgia had ran a little flip pass almost every time Tennessee had brought outside pressure and stafford didn’t think to look before he threw. Good hands by Ayers gave the Vols the ball back.

53-yard pass from Stephens to Moore. This pass was so unexpected and so huge. Moore beat his man and Stephens put the ball right on the money deep. Great coverage too. Tennessee got the ball in 3 plays later with a 2 yard pass from Stephens to Mr. Jones.

3rd down & 7 from the Georgia 5: 14 yard pass Stafford to Moreno. If Georgia hadn’t gotten this they would have been punting from their endzone. It stole UT’s momentum after the botched kick by Georgia. Stafford did a good job making the play work after it broke down.

After another first down, another bad call by the refs negated good coverage. A big hit was called shoulder-to-shoulder contact when it obviously wasn’t. The play had a chance to be a big one for Tennesee, who has lacked big hits on defense. Instead Georgia would take over and get several big plays, including a warrented personal foul later in the drive.

3 & 3 from the Tennessee 9: Massequol caught a wide-open pass from Stafford. Tennessee’s coverage was awful as the safety looked away from Stafford who was staring at Massequol the entire way. That’s a silly mistake that cost Tennessee 7 (or 4, with a field goal) points.

Hmmm.

2 kickoffs by Colquitt – neither of them deep.

Yeah, as bad as UT's O has been

At least give the OC a year to put his plan/personnel in place.

I take that back

Swing pass on 3rd and long?

Down 13?

And now a wasted TO.

To be fair,

Colquitt’s punting has been mostly good today (except for the one, of course). It’s his kickoffs I’m not in love with.

Hey!

How can UGA be tied for first in the East last year? I thought we were the East champs!

I thought it might have been

the hand on the back was on the back, after all..

Of course, we have to realize that to these Refs, knocking the ball away without touching the ball is also Pass Interference, so I guess they just misunderstand the rule. Badly.

I feel the need to say

That I called that screen before the ball was snapped.

by wvvol on Oct 11, 2008 5:45 PM EDT reply actions

Not true.

UT’s been one of the more penalty-heavy teams over the years. They’ve just usually been good enough to overcome it and take advantage of the aggressiveness.

by David Hooper on Oct 11, 2008 5:46 PM EDT reply actions

Have you noticed?

Teams are figuring out how to keep the action of the play away from Berry. I haven’t heard his name much in the last few weeks.

by David Hooper on Oct 11, 2008 5:50 PM EDT reply actions

Robert Ayers came to play today

Wish some of that would rub off on his teammates.

Tight spirals with a ton of velocity. Accurate, too.

Really nice play by Stephens.

We need a stop.

Hooper, how’s the time looking?

Time is ok right now.

UT can weather up to 1 more score by UGA, max.

The thread is lagging, though.
