Keep in mind, though:
He didn’t say that Stephens would start. He said that Crompton would not start.
There’s still the possibility of having Jones run the G-Gun in the first series, which would downplay the “starting” QB idea. I can see Fulmer doing this to avoid having to name a proper starting QB for this game, which would largely avoid the issue.
Also keep in mind: it’s not an official announcement, but an inside source. He was live on the radio show, which adds credence, but there’s still margin for error.
An unnamed "inside source" calling in on the radio?
Did he have one of those voice scramblers?

No. It's not that he was unnamed.
It’s that I didn’t catch the name. Tony said it once or twice, but I couldn’t make it out. I have to keep the radio volume down while at work.
And he was live and his voice was clear. But either way, we’ll find out in due time.
