Jackson the Mule says . . .

. . . who's number 17?

Northern Illinois visits Neyland Stadium as the Vols are trying to solve their offensive woes. Tennessee will try to reanimate the offense by starting QB Nick Stephens in place of Jonathan Crompton, who has been mistake-prone and wildly inaccurate during the Vols' miserable 1-3 start to the season.

birdjam wins this week's Hail Mary Haiku with the following:

“Northern Illinois,”
Hey, that is five syllables!

Is that CSTV internet radio pretty reliable?

I’m sick today and the only place to watch the game on PPV for free is a really smokey bar, which would wreak havoc with my cough.

It's worked for me in the past

But if I remember right, it might only work w/ Explorer and not Firefox.

by Joel Hollingsworth on Oct 4, 2008 1:52 PM EDT up reply actions

Fortunately,

there is an extension for Firefox that allows you to open up an IE tab within the Firefox window. That solves that problem pretty neatly.

It’s not available for Macs, though; you have to have IE on the computer for it to work.

by David Hooper on Oct 4, 2008 1:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Looks like it might work in Safari

Will check back later and let you know. I can also run IE6 with Crossover Office if that doesn’t work.

It's how I always listen

It’s not bad, but it does lag behind a little bit. So if I’m following the thread here and listening, I usually know what’s gonna happen before it happens….

The Arkansas Turnoverbacks

are living up to form. They could conceivably be leading Florida right now if their offense could hold onto the ball.

Or their special teams.

by David Hooper on Oct 4, 2008 2:06 PM EDT reply actions

Speaking of special teams:

Arkansas: muffed punt catch – turnover to Florida, who got a touchdown on a drive with about 60 yards worth of penalties against the Gators.

Florida: Brandon James kick return for TD called back for a block in the back. Irony is that the block had no effect on the play.

Florida: chip-shot FG attempt by Arkansas blocked by Florida

Yeah, special teams matter.

Blowouts vs. Clemson and Georgia, but a closer one against Tulane. (No explanation for Arky.)

So UT has a chance!!!

Bending

No break. Very close coverage on that last 3rd down. Could have been interference.

NIU’s offense sort of appears to have them on their heels. They’ll likely figure it out after a series or two.

I got my oil changed today at Jiffy Lube.

They had a magazine on the waiting area table that had a quick Q/A with Fulmer. It was published preseason. He sidestepped every question in the article except about Foster, where he said expected Foster to break the rushing record early in the season.

Here's a question to help:

How well would other running backs do in place of Foster on the plays where he succeeds? If the answer is comparable, then the reward opportunity just isn’t there.

by David Hooper on Oct 4, 2008 7:49 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm guessing

Several plays where the RB doesn’t get caught from behind. Several plays where there are another 10-20 yards after the corner that he doesn’t get. I think it’s huge.

That’s why Jerry Rice could always run free. He lined up in the slot, so you couldn’t jam him at the line of scrimmage. That allowed him to outmaneuver the cover man (or find the hole in the zone coverage).

Defensive penalties don't correlate well to wins/losses.

Offensive penalties correlate much better, so there’s that.

by David Hooper on Oct 4, 2008 8:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Offensive penalties often end up killing drives.

On defense, a penalty might give a 1st down, but you still have a chance to make a stop. That’s why defenses can be more aggressive than offenses. You get a second chance on the drive.

by David Hooper on Oct 4, 2008 8:11 PM EDT up reply actions

If I was running UNI's gameplan, I wouldn't scheme anything deep.

UT’s D allows too much short stuff to justify the risk of throwing into the real strength of the D.

Definition of halftime at Neyland:

Defense goes in to the locker room, offense comes out.

by David Hooper on Oct 4, 2008 9:03 PM EDT reply actions

UT has reason to be worried.

It’s a one-score game with 20 minutes of gametime left. However, UNI has run 49 offensive plays while UT has only run 29. Their defense will have absolutely no stamina issues, but UT may start getting gassed in as few as 5 more plays, especially if UT goes 3-and-out now.

second half TOP:

UNI 10:06

UT 5:33

Things aren’t looking good.

by David Hooper on Oct 4, 2008 9:27 PM EDT reply actions

Nice pressure on 3rd down

Middle screen was open, but pressure forced a bad throw.

Go Vols!

BIIIIIG clock-keeping gaffe by Wisky

They had one TO left (1st half) and hit a beautiful pass for a 1st at the OSU 3 yard line with 5 seconds left. If they use the TO, they get one pass into the end zone before kicking a figgie. Instead, they spike the ball – losing one second. Now they have to kick the figgie – that one second cost them a chance at a pass.

by David Hooper on Oct 4, 2008 9:31 PM EDT reply actions

Wake up call

Are we really ahead by four points with 12:05 left in the 4th quarter?

Go Vols!

by Joel Hollingsworth on Oct 4, 2008 9:33 PM EDT reply actions

We're to the 20

Should be interesting to see if the coaches agree with the no-Foster after the 20s meme.

Go Vols!

by Joel Hollingsworth on Oct 4, 2008 9:38 PM EDT reply actions

Nope, and it's a good thing

Foster to the 11. Left side this time.

Go Vols!

by Joel Hollingsworth on Oct 4, 2008 9:38 PM EDT up reply actions

When's the last time before this year you felt trepidation in the red zone?

2005?

I wasn’t here then, so I’m asking.

by David Hooper on Oct 4, 2008 9:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Not even then, I don't think

There were errors in the red zone back then, but not in such concentrated amounts as the beginning of this season.

Go Vols!

by Joel Hollingsworth on Oct 4, 2008 9:41 PM EDT up reply actions

The only ones I remember

Are Foster’s fumble at the goal line against South Carolina and Corey Anderson’s fumble through the back of the end zone against Alabama.

Ainge’s INT for six in the danger zone.

Anyone remember others?

Go Vols!

by Joel Hollingsworth on Oct 4, 2008 9:45 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree

Lots of swing plays breaking bad, but not just BAD BAD BADNESS like we’re seeing this year.

I missed the good 'ol days

when it was called the orange zone. Where did you go yellow zone?

by ChattVol on Oct 4, 2008 9:42 PM EDT up reply actions

Nah.

Foster needs to fumble at least once more in the red zone before we consider him bad juju.

Or twice. Or thrice.

Well, he’s a senior. Let him play.

by David Hooper on Oct 4, 2008 9:39 PM EDT up reply actions

So...

Vandy won again.

Alabama beat Kentucky, but only with the same fortune that Auburn had in beating Tennessee.

Florida.

Georgia.

South Carolina.

….Are we really fighting with South Carolina for last place in the division?

by David Hooper on Oct 4, 2008 9:45 PM EDT reply actions

Maybe not.

South Carolina has an SEC win under their belts.

by ChattVol on Oct 4, 2008 9:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Wow.

Sack in the red zone, missed FG. Still up by only four.

Go Vols!

by Joel Hollingsworth on Oct 4, 2008 9:46 PM EDT reply actions

And back to Foster

Sigh. Not to be overly negative or repetitive, but another of our problems is that Foster is good.

Go Vols!

Better late than never

How’s Stephens looked?

Deferring is for p_ssies. Make a decision!

by wvvol on Oct 4, 2008 9:54 PM EDT reply actions

Good early

Not as good late. Better than Crompton, though, I’d say.

Welcome.

Go Vols!

by Joel Hollingsworth on Oct 4, 2008 9:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah

I’d say that’s probably right. It’s really hard to factor in the strength of the opponents, though.

Stephens did have a gaff (or two?), but he at least looked accurate most of the time.

Go Vols!

by Joel Hollingsworth on Oct 4, 2008 9:59 PM EDT up reply actions

Officials disagree

on whether Rogers caught that or not.

Replay says no. Looks like a bounce to me.

Go Vols!

by Joel Hollingsworth on Oct 4, 2008 9:54 PM EDT reply actions

And yeah

What is the call on the field? It was called both ways.

Go Vols!

by Joel Hollingsworth on Oct 4, 2008 9:54 PM EDT up reply actions

Has UT ever won a game with Thomas Ritter as the referee?

I can’t remember.

Deferring is for p_ssies. Make a decision!

by wvvol on Oct 4, 2008 9:57 PM EDT reply actions

If UNI scores a TD, the game is over.

Unless the score happens really really really really quickly, the clock will be too far gone.

by David Hooper on Oct 4, 2008 9:58 PM EDT reply actions

That was a weird time for a timeout.

UNI better go for the 4th. Without timeouts, UT can kill the clock. (For all intents and purposes.)

by David Hooper on Oct 4, 2008 9:59 PM EDT reply actions

Thank you hooper

for correct form. I’ve seen “intensive purposes” recently. Not that it matters. It’s the only positive thing I can come up with right now.

by ChattVol on Oct 4, 2008 10:01 PM EDT up reply actions

heh

You’re most welcome. I get twitchy from mistakes like that, too.

by David Hooper on Oct 4, 2008 10:03 PM EDT up reply actions

punts hang in the air longer than FG attempts.

Though the extra 3 points would help, the odds are slightly better on returning a kickoff for a TD than a desperation from the 20 or farther.

by David Hooper on Oct 4, 2008 10:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Just how much of a bummer is it

that we’re talking about how to use up the rest of the clock and get out of there with a win. Against Northern Illinois.

Go Vols!

by Joel Hollingsworth on Oct 4, 2008 10:03 PM EDT reply actions

:(

Trying not to think about that.

Deferring is for p_ssies. Make a decision!

by wvvol on Oct 4, 2008 10:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Yay!

We can’t even kill the clock with the new rules!

by David Hooper on Oct 4, 2008 10:05 PM EDT reply actions

Hmm...

maybe this is why Cutcliffe would tell Ainge to pass after 1.5 seconds.

by David Hooper on Oct 4, 2008 10:06 PM EDT reply actions

Ha!

We almost got a TD on their desperation multiple-lateral play.

Go Vols!

by Joel Hollingsworth on Oct 4, 2008 10:06 PM EDT reply actions

Well,

at least one pick will be easy to make next weekend.

by David Hooper on Oct 4, 2008 10:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Later, y'all

I’m up at 4:15 for a horse show, so no post-game ramblings and perhaps no full-length post-game tomorrow, either.

Have a great Sunday.

Go Vols!

by Joel Hollingsworth on Oct 4, 2008 10:08 PM EDT reply actions

Giddyup!

Deferring is for p_ssies. Make a decision!

by wvvol on Oct 4, 2008 10:08 PM EDT up reply actions

Ha

Don’t get the wrong idea. I’m like Eric Berry in that I’m afraid of horses and cattle. (That’s probably where the similarities end.) 12-year old daughter showing. Dutiful and proud parent. So yeah, giddyup for her.

Later!

Go Vols!
