Auburn fires offensive coordinator | ajc.com
You think Dave Clawson should be worried? Franklin was fired after seven games.

Doubt it
My parents and I were talking about it this week. They’re UT fans. I said I thought Tuberville would fire Franklin but Fulmer wouldn’t fire Clawson (or Franklin if in the same circumstance) because Tubs treats it like a business while Fulmer treats it like a family.

I don't think so either.
One interesting thing about coaching at a college is that it’s very difficult to radically change an established philosophy. Auburn has thrived on the power running game and an offense based on physicality. When playing the War Eagles, you always knew it was going to be smashmouth. The Spread was quite the opposite of that, and it wasn’t introduced because the power game no longer worked. It was an arbitrary shift that didn’t have any driving force behind it other than hiring a new coordinator.
Unlike all the rumors going around Clawson’s system really isn’t a spread offense. If anything, it’s really not that far from a Cutcliffe system other than the flipping O-line and the difference in line calls. (Make that a Cutcliffe system with slants and deep passes in the playbook.) But philosophically, it’s not too different from the things that have always worked at UT: solid rushing game, solid-but-not-flashy passing game, and an emphasis on using early-drive playcalls to set up late-drive opportunities.
And I still believe Auburn should change their mascot from the Tigers to the War Eagles. It just makes too much sense.

The offense I saw out of UT at the AU/UT game
Really reminded me of Al Borges’ West Coast-ish offense, at least the one we ran earlier in his tenure. It could (maybe should) work, but it’s just not.

I think the Clawfense is suppose to be closer to the WCO than a spread.
It’s obviously not a full-blown WCO; with the roster turnover and the restrictions on practice time, there’s no practical way to train a college team to the finesse and timing of a WCO. But it’s still a good analog.
I still think it should work and I’m still a full-fledged Clawson apologist, but I’ll leave it at that for now.

I think Tubs might be a little quick on the draw
While I think Fulmer is too slow. If only they could learn from each other…

I don't understand this
It almost seems like someone other than Tubs hired Franklin, and Tubs was looking for any chance to fire him. From what I’ve read he never really got to implement his offense.
I think Clawson’s problem has been poor QB play. When your QB can’t hit an open receiver, your offense probably isn’t going to do well. I think you have to give the guy at least one year before your pull the trigger.

There's definitely more to this story than is being reported.
Rumors are everywhere right now, so there’s a lot of untrustworthy information, but this was conducted far too quickly too be a purely business-level decision. You could very well be right about the hiring. My hunch is that there was a lot of tension around Franklin, and most likely it was between him and Tuberville.
We’ll see, though; this one will be interesting to follow as the internal sources begin to divulge the dirty little secrets. It’s going to happen, and will probably start in a couple of days one the initial furor dies down.
