That seems to be the norm for coaches not named Saban.
Butch Davis’s statements also have wiggle room to them. I think it’s a byproduct of the process. Since the agents do all the preliminary negotiations, the coaches may often not even know what the offer looks like until rather late into the game. I think they often speak on the side of caution to make sure they don’t alienate their current home base, so they make statements of satisfaction in their locale. Then if the offer is as good as (or better than) anticipated, they take a serious look at the situation.
