I Don't Understand the Anti-Butch Davis Hype
He did not have a bunch of talent at Miami. He had to build it up on his own. His winning percentage was worse than his predecessor because his predecessor rampantly cheated and he had to dig the program out from that hole. And his successor took his talent just as it reached full blossom. Butch Davis is pretty much singlehandedly responsible for that Miami run.
And while we're at it, I don't understand why everybody wants Mike Leach. For a window into what will happen if we get Leach, look to the Troy-LSU game last weekend. Troy was up 31-3, needing only to basically kneel the ball for the last quarter and a half for a guaranteed victory, and they continued throwing the ball, giving LSU time to come back, because that's what their ridiculous "system" says to do. I guarantee you that will happen at some point in a huge SEC game if we get Leach. Mike Leach is a gimmick coach who is having his first truly successful year right now, and for the life of me, I don't understand why everyone thinks we want him, but no one thinks we want Butch Davis.
Butch Davis is the best coach on our list (with the possible exception of Gruden). He does not run a ridiculous gimmick offense, he runs a pro-style offense, which is still the best thing to run. Fulmer had that aspect right (well, at least until this year), and completely changing to some offense where our personnel don't fit would be an incredibly silly thing to do. Nebraska did that. Where are they? Michigan did that. Where are they? Plus, if you're complaining about someone who has no credentials on paper, how can you seriously be touting Mike Leach? The guy has done nothing. Oh sure, he's run up a bunch of stats, but he's won nothing. In my opinion, the surest way to ruin this program would be to hire Mike Leach.

Hey, nirwin, thanks for swinging by!
Re: Davis
I don’t think anybody would object to getting Butch Davis, even if they prefer somebody else a little more. We have our advocates for Leach, Muschamp, Kelly, etc., but I’m sure that most/all of them be quite accepting of Davis. The problem with Davis is that he seems very unlikely to take the job. Given his medical history, his current success (and quite reasonable salary), his statements, and his family’s contentment with Chapel Hill, it’s just very difficult to think of him uprooting and heading this way. I think people tend to be down on the probability more so than the prospect.
Re: Leach
Leach hype primarily comes down to two things. First, Leach runs one of the most powerful offenses that college football has ever seen, and that with recruiting castaways who weren’t picked up by Texas, OU, and a few other schools. (They’re still very good athletes, but he does start at a disadvantage.) Offensively, this year is right on par for Leach; it’s the defense that’s the difference. Now that Leach has somebody who is making the defense more effective, people are seeing a more well-rounded program that can score a lot of points on anybody and is continually getting better at stopping opponents.
Second, Leach gets a lot of attention because Texas Tech has the one thing that people miss the most at UT – excitement. Win or lose, the TTech games are thrilling to watch and be a part of. While Tennessee has been blah on offense, very solid but not exciting on defense, and meh on special teams, Tech has you glued to the TV wondering, “what’s next?”. A lot of fans simply want to be entertained, and Leach offers incredible entertainment potential.
Those are the main reasons behind the sentiments. Take ’em or leave ’em as you please. And stick around; you do bring up some good points.

He's the same age as Fulmer
Let’s get some young blood in there. “Mike Leach”-young.
It’s been since 2004 that a “pro-style” offense (USC) won a national championship so if by “best thing to run” you mean “offense that brings home hardware,” I think those days are over.

What about Davis excites you?
Is it the security that comes with his name? To say that Butch Davis is single handedly responsible for that Miami run, is just speculation. I would say it was more to do with Talent, Just like I say the same for Fumers run in the late 90’s. When you dont have the talent unfortunately you gotta evaluate talent and coach’em up which is what some of the second tier coaches are doing. like Kelly and Brewster, Leach and probably some I dont know. They are coaching players with (in theory) lesser talent. Lets not forget most of the top names came from smaller schools(Saban, spurrier, meyer, stoopes). At this point I just wanna be EXCITED about the program and maybe take a few years to get there. More then I want to land a nice safe conservative name..I will say this I think Leach’s success right now is mostly due to the fact that he has a BEAST offensive line, a Top 5 QB and a Top 3 (if not the best) receiver. When you got that your gonna win I dont care who the coach is…..The question is how did Leach end up with this team?

I think they (powers that be) want continuity.
I predict (and you can take that and a dollar fifty and buy a Sundrop) that they will convince
John Chavis to take the helm. The first thing he will do is fire the OC. This will have the effect of hitting the mule with the proverbial 2×4. This provides a warm fuzzy feeling with a known quantity with a history (and who will have Phillip’s full support). Fire Hamilton (I said this long ago) and hire Phillip as AD. There. Now you can save all that money on a talent search.
