Shane in Alabama writes: Chris, what of the rampant speculation over the past 24 hours that Lane Kiffin to Tennessee is a done deal? Either way, GO VOLS!
Chris Low: I've thought since Tennessee fired Phillip Fulmer that Lane Kiffin was at or near the top of Tennessee's list. I still believe that, although it would be premature to call it a done deal. Tennessee athletic director Mike Hamilton and his search party are still out talking to people. In fact, they're on the road today. What I know to be fact is that Kiffin has already started talking to people about coming with him to Tennessee. One of those people is former Ole Miss coach Ed Orgeron, now an assistant with the New Orleans Saints. Orgeron was a recruiting whiz at Ole Miss, and he worked with Kiffin on the Southern California staff earlier this decade. I could see Orgeron coming as either a defensive coordinator, associate head coach and/or recruiting coordinator. I think the Vols will have their coach named by the middle of December. The other names to keep an eye on are Cincinnati's Brian Kelly, Texas Tech's Mike Leach and Air Force's Troy Calhoun. I think the Vols have also talked with Minnesota's Tim Brewster. But I've thought from the beginning that the final decision would come down to Kelly or Kiffin.

VIVA L’ORGERON!

Chris Low is the best guy to listen to, if you're going to follow rumors.
So long as that doesn’t involve an eventual transfer of control to Orgeron, I could give it a shot.
But the bits about MH still going out and talking make the most sense to me. Until a signature is on a piece of paper, there are always possibilities.
Coach O's a good place to start
If you’re looking for a D-coordinator, that is. But I think Cincinnati has one already. ;)
Of course, if we’re to the point that Kiffin’s looking for coordinators, that may mean we’re closer than we think.

Question:
When a coach actually signs the contract, does he already have the staff lined up and approved by the AD? Or does all that wait until after the John Hancock? I would imagine that assembling verbals from the prospective staff would be somewhat mandatory before the offer is made, but I really have no idea.

I'd say it depends.
If it’s a previous head coach getting hired, he probably has a staff already lined up, but if it’s a coordinator who got the HC job, he might have to hunt around to fill out his crew.
Hey, maybe he'll hire a special teams coach!
Wouldn’t that be neat?

I haven't had too many complaints about our special teams this year
Most of them stem back to Cunningham only being a good punter when he’s doing it from the opponent’s 40 yard line and Lincoln’s sudden inability to hit a field goal.
They weren't as bad as we like to remember them.
Here are my memories:
+ Cunningham too slow.
+ Lincoln not as effective.
+ No kickoffs into the end zone.
+ Punting directly to really, really good returners. Every time.
+ Bad punt protection early in the season. (The UCLA fiasco wasn’t Cunningham’s fault.)
Returns were alright, but I wouldn’t mind spiffying them up to Florida levels or so.

Rogan was great in the KR game
I wish we could have seen Berry in the punt return game. That seems the most similar to an interception return. I think he would have been pretty dynamic.
One dim light doesn't look so bad
If the rest are burnt out.

What is this special teams you speak of?
I thought only Virginia Tech could field a special team.

Sure ... Gerry Dinardo!
Thankfully, that is a joke (albeit a very small one).
If given a choice ‘tween Kiffin + Kelly, I’d take Kelly, but that’s just me.
Though it would funny to see Coach O on the sidelines yelling incomprehensibly at Smokey, the grass, and “unseen critters and beasties”…

A glimpse into the future with Coach O
“nyah nyah nyah nyah nyah nyah nyah nyah eric berry”
His dad
If Lane can bring his dad in to be the DC, now that would be exciting. And Orgeron would have to be on the staff in some capacity, simply for the sake of his recruiting prowess.
At least we still have Eric Berry
