couple of analysts predicting Gonzaga to make it to the Final Four for the first time this March...
lots of experience, as mentioned above, and Josh Heytvelt is a beast in the paint and will be our biggest problem tonight
I don't think we'll be starting on time...
This game hasn’t finished yet. Don’t they need 30 minutes for warm-up?

Oh, good

Kiffin announcement at 2 PM tomorrow if you haven't heard.
Also, Corn From a Jar put up a FanShot with Mike Hamilton’s letter in it.
just read it...same info I had heard...what do you think will be revieled tomorrow? Anything suprising?
Probably not.
By this time, all the info has been scooped clean. The only thing left to wait on is the announcement of more staff members and contract details. Those should trickle in over the next few weeks or so.

plus has anybody heard the rumor that #1 ranked overall QB prospect Matt Barkley is going to visit UT in Dec. because of the Kiffin hire?
Heard the rumor, but not from anything resembling a source.
If anybody gets actual wind, please post, though.

So.
Sitting in the airport, no headphones. Should I annoy everyone around me and stream the audio of the game?
Oh, I don't know

Well, keep in mind
After I landed here, I realized I should’ve brought my Pittsburgh-era Ron Francis jersey, worn it through the airport, and tried to pick fights to pass the time. So I’m not exactly shy about sports confrontations.
And I wore a USC cap through the Dallas airport the day of the ’05 BCS Championship Game.

Ha
Good point.
Funny story about Memphis. I have a step brother who lives in Memphis with his family. He has two twin girls who are about 4 or 5. Last year he sent us some pictures of them making snow angels, but he called them Drive By Drills.
So, yeah, safety might be something to think about.
What are they going to do, not graduate on us?
I ain’t skeered.

But I can’t get a decent connection anyway, so it may be a moot point. The main wireless broadcaster isn’t letting me pick up a signal so I’m cribbing from some other place instead.

nah.
Their tiebreak system doesn’t work that way is all.
by David Hooper on Nov 30, 2008 8:37 PM EST up reply actions
I think there are good arguments
both ways, but the head to head stuff is essentially negated by the rock, paper, scissors senario, in which case you need to go with numbers, and Oklahoma’s numbers are apparently better.
Go Vols!
by Joel Hollingsworth on Nov 30, 2008 8:36 PM EST up reply actions
there are.
it’s not a clean problem. If it was, there wouldn’t be any argument over it. However, the Big 12 decided their tiebreakers long before the season started, and that’s what matters. If they had instituted a “best two in BCS go to head-to-head” tiebreak, then Texas would play Missouri.
by David Hooper on Nov 30, 2008 8:37 PM EST up reply actions
And all of a sudden
we’re up by 3.

It's strange
How frequently Prince gets called for traveling and Smith for palming the ball. Kind of like how UT quarterbacks constantly have their passes batted down at the LOS.
Something about Love relegated to luggage is strangely satisfying
after all the ESPN love for him last year.
One thing about playing fast is that it's mentally draining.
If you’re used to it, the mind adapts. But that gets to be a lot of information to process, and mental lapses can catch up to a team that’s not used to the tempo.
No idea
I’ve seen Pearl animated before, but I don’t know that I’ve ever seen him so angry. He must have seen something he really didn’t like. I’d imagine he’ll use that in the 2nd half.
Go Vols!
by Joel Hollingsworth on Nov 30, 2008 8:54 PM EST up reply actions
So....
ESPN’s floor guy decided to interview the Zag coach over Pearl?
Somebody’s still jealous about halftime in Memphis…
Now that it's halftime, I should clarify:
I have a very chill stance on things like the OU/Texas/TTech tiebreaker for the Big 12 championship game. In any sport, the rules you play by are all arbitrary. For example, the forward pass doesn’t have to be legal. People like it enough that they have the rule. But it’s arbitrary nonetheless. The crucial point is that the rules are known beforehand and everybody agrees to play by them.
The Big 12 decided to use a BCS standing tiebreaker to give their highest-ranked team a better chance to play in the conference champ game and maybe have a shot at the MNC. Every team in the conference knew that, and you never heard any complaints before the season started. With that, every team will abide by the rule now that it matters. If the Big 12 decides they don’t like how it works out, they can always change it in the offseason. But for now, they’re stuck with it.
Looking at the computer rankings, the key to remember is that Texas played all their hard games before Oklahoma did. OU didn’t get Tech and OSU until the end, so their resume was missing some of their most important contributors. That’s why Texas was so strong in the computers for so long; they had the better numbers. But if you look at the 12 games each team played, forget the actual order of play (since the computers don’t care), and even forget that you’re looking at two teams that played head-to-head (since the computers don’t care), the results are sensible. Both schools played a great schedule, but OU’s had some slightly better marks. For one, they didn’t play Missouri, so the loss to Kansas didn’t hurt OU. For another, their OOC schedule had a better season. Lastly, their differentials were greater (points for / points against, etc.). It’s not overwhelming by any means, but it’s there.
The thing about the head-to-head is that one game never tells you which team is actually better; it just tells you which one has the better data for a metric from the one game. What that means will depend on how you choose to look at it.
Again, if the Big12 had decided to use a tiebreaker that would currently favor Texas, I wouldn’t have any problem with it either. Since this only determines the team that plays against Missouri, it’s their issue. OU still has to beat Missouri to play in the MNC. And there’s an outside chance that Texas may make the MNC even if OU wins.
But that’s just me.
I don't have any problems with their rules
I just take issue with a system that sends the loser of a head to head game to the championship while the winner is left out.
It’s the BCS at its worst.
Question, then:
Why a playoff?
(I’ll explain after the answer.)
by David Hooper on Nov 30, 2008 9:14 PM EST up reply actions
Feeling Socratic tonight, aren't we?

by Joel Hollingsworth on Nov 30, 2008 9:16 PM EST up reply actions
A little.
I have some disagreements with the playoff push that I’ve been sitting on for a while. The Wiz and Doc are starting to get to me though. I just might fire back in a while if I get in the right mood.
by David Hooper on Nov 30, 2008 9:18 PM EST up reply actions
I'm ambivalent
I like the diversity of a playoff in basketball and the bowl system in football. Each has its merits.
Go Vols!
by Joel Hollingsworth on Nov 30, 2008 9:20 PM EST up reply actions
Me too
If we go to a playoff, I’ll be perfectly fine with it. But let’s not call the winner the national champion. Let’s call them the playoff champion; it’s more accurate.
by David Hooper on Nov 30, 2008 9:26 PM EST up reply actions
It won't be perfect
As arbitrary rankings will still come into play, but it will be better than what we’ve got. And in situations like what we’ve got in the Big 12 South (3 way tie), justice will probably still not be served. But the BCS screws teams on almost a yearly basis. If they don’t want to have a playoff, then make every BCS conference play either a round robin or have conference championship games. There is no consistency and I don’t like arbitrarily ranking teams above or below each other when they have never played.
Fair enough.
The argument about ranking teams w/out any head-to-head experience is one you never hear. But it’s legitimate.
by David Hooper on Nov 30, 2008 9:22 PM EST up reply actions
Yeah, there is no perfect solution
I just think we can do better. I will say, though, that other than the mess in the Big 12, the BCS rankings seem to be a little more reasonable this year. I do find it annoying that USC is ranked so high, but other than that it’s not so bad.
My big beef with the playoff push is that it doesn't solve the problem it's been presented with.
Most people want to find out “who the best team in the country is”. Playoffs don’t do that. Just like we argue whether the single-game performance between Texas and OU or the whole-season performance should have priority, there just isn’t any way to find the “best” team in a playoff system. You put two teams on the field where, Team A might beat Team B 7 out of 10 times. But if the actual game fits within the 30%, it doesn’t mean Team B is better. It just means Team B won the game.
If people put forward the idea for a playoff for its own merit, that’d be different. But proposing a playoff because of the OU/Texas deal (or similar events) doesn’t answer the problem itself. At best, you can say it shifts the problem further down the polls (again the rankings!) where the argument may not be quite so loud.
by David Hooper on Nov 30, 2008 9:26 PM EST up reply actions
I agree
It only finds the best team in the country RIGHT NOW. And upsets will still happen. I just think it does away with most legitimate arguments that Team A or Team B should have been the one in the National Championship game. If Team A beats Team C, and Team B ends up beating Team A, Team C doesn’t really have an argument that they would have beaten Team B if given the chance. Of course, that could happen (Team C beating Team A), but it removes a lot of the legitimacy from the argument, I think.
Plus it will lead to some great OOC football games, and you can’t go wrong with that.
Sure, but it'll probably destroy the good OOC games during the season.
If you only have to be top 8, then your typical SEC, PAC-10, Big12 and Big10 teams only need to win their conference to make the playoff. Why risk upset?
Would tOSU have played USC if they merely needed to be top 8? They’d have probably played Youngstown State instead.
by David Hooper on Nov 30, 2008 9:31 PM EST up reply actions
Well
You’d like to think that the BCS/pollsters would punish them for that. And just winning your conference doesn’t put in the Top 8. Anyway, I’m not saying it’s perfect. I just think it’s better. And I’m perfectly fine with agreeing to disagree :)
Yeah thank the idiots on I40 for that garbage
It was like everyone got together and decided to drive in the left lane about two miles an hour faster than everyone in the right lane.

Chippy is a fun word. So, are you sure it wasn’t chippy where you were? Because you were obviously thinking something was chippy and one doesn’t generally think something is chippy unless something is actually chippy. I must therefore conclude that something was chippy somewhere.

Going undefeated doesn’t pay any more than losing 14. Gonzaga didn’t miss their dunks or 3’s and we had no one who could get hot from outside (or inside).
