i hear ya

there’s always something “new” and / or improved that you have to install. any friend of mine that forwards me some junk with Silverlight automatically gets spammed. I’ve had enough of downloading software just to see stupid pet tricks.

" Whatcha got ain't nothin new. This country's hard on people, you can't stop what's coming, it ain't all waiting on you. That's vanity. "

Try the Sports Animal

http://www.sportsanimal99.com/

They will probably stream the audio. But I think CBS has exclusive rights to the video, so you’re stuck with Silverlight if you want to see it.

(Side note: Silverlight actually works very well, if you ever do decide to break down and install it. It plays quite nicely with Firefox, which is a huge relief.)

The Sports Animal is going to broadcast the news conference

But they may run into licensing issues with streaming it. But it’s definitely going to be on the radio.

They are having an interesting interview with the author of Meat Market right now.

Linked over

Just saw a picture of Mickey Dearstone for the first time. Not what I expected.

by ChattVol on Dec 1, 2008 1:55 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Huh

Didn’t know he worked at Jacksonville.

by rblakeh on Dec 1, 2008 2:02 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Pat Hill!

I was about to invoke him on the other thread.

by Graysnail on Dec 1, 2008 2:03 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Players in the back this time

They learned from the last one.

by hooper on Dec 1, 2008 2:04 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

No names, though

They should’ve been wearing their jerseys. :)

by Graysnail on Dec 1, 2008 2:05 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

That makes sense.

Remember the story of Kiffin golfing in Knoxville? I could see him being the lead guy in Hamilton’s mind for a while.

by hooper on Dec 1, 2008 2:05 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

It looks like he is mostly talking to the players

Or at least in the direction of the players. His eyes keep going back to the area they gestured to as being where the players are.

Probably a coincidence.

by rblakeh on Dec 1, 2008 2:06 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Put a fence around the state of Tennessee

I think the state has been neglected by the previous staff. There actually is some talent here, believe it or not.

by rblakeh on Dec 1, 2008 2:08 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I love this guy

by govols87 on Dec 1, 2008 2:10 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Bleh

John Adams got to go first.

by rblakeh on Dec 1, 2008 2:12 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Watch tomorrow's paper

John Adams will torch him. If he endorses him, get Mike Leach on the phone.

by ChattVol on Dec 1, 2008 2:15 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

But I think he endorsed Leach, too

Basically anyone but Fulmer, it seems.

by rblakeh on Dec 1, 2008 2:16 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

he lost Fulmer as a contact

I bet he’s staging himself to establish new contacts.

by hooper on Dec 1, 2008 2:17 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Real questions, plz?

how about describing the offensive philosophy?

by hooper on Dec 1, 2008 2:15 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

That puts his age in perspective

He was on the same team as David Carr.

w00t!!!

Raiders bashing!

I’m on board

by hooper on Dec 1, 2008 2:16 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

good grief, he’s honest.

tactful, but open.

by hooper on Dec 1, 2008 2:19 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Ballsy.

Although “we’ll be good when we get good” could easily be the new “they were what they thought we were”.

by Graysnail on Dec 1, 2008 2:23 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Adams' article title:

“New Coach Kiffin Doesn’t Know How To Think.”

by Graysnail on Dec 1, 2008 2:24 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Wow

Every “top kid” he talked to at USC always had UT in their top 5, initially.

by rblakeh on Dec 1, 2008 2:24 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

don't wanna think about it.

it’s too easy to spin that in a negative light.

Forward the Future!

by hooper on Dec 1, 2008 2:25 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I thought it was a positive

But I’m an optimist. Well not really, but I am when it comes to UT football.

by rblakeh on Dec 1, 2008 2:26 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

It is a positive.

It means they’re interested. But it also means they decided not to come here.

by hooper on Dec 1, 2008 2:27 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

1999

He’d have been what: 24?

Wow.

by hooper on Dec 1, 2008 2:26 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Ooh.

Money for staff.

This bill’s going to be a biggie.

(Fine with me.)

by hooper on Dec 1, 2008 2:29 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

No kidding.

Can someone just ask him if he’ll take the Lions opening in three years and stop beating around the bush?

by Graysnail on Dec 1, 2008 2:33 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

That's one of those "dumb" things to say in football

I mean, I know that most of us prefer for the left tackle to get 20 carries a game, but these new coaches are trying something different by putting the ball in the hands of the “playmakers.”

by rblakeh on Dec 1, 2008 2:35 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

He's making it extremely clear that he is not going anywhere

This job isn’t just a stepping stone to him. Again, he could be lying, but he is speaking directly to the concerns of the majority of fans.

by rblakeh on Dec 1, 2008 2:33 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

He's got a six year deal

I’m sure he’s smart enough to not mention any dates between now and then

by ChattVol on Dec 1, 2008 2:35 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Just saying

He’s making it specifically clear. He’s giving answers, not non denial denials.

Ya know, like his dad at Tampa Bay. “Ah it’s just all speculation…”

by rblakeh on Dec 1, 2008 2:36 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

my biggest concern for sure

he’s not gonna bring daddy to a stepping stone though

by hal41605 on Dec 1, 2008 2:35 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Let's hope the abs() isn't necessary

I’m not sure how negative speed works.

I like the philosophy though. Some guys aren’t fast when they are in full pads. Earl Bennett had a “slow” 40, but he didn’t lose any speed when he was in full pads.

by rblakeh on Dec 1, 2008 2:37 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

btw

EDSBS apparently has a liveblog for the presser as well. afterwards, it might be interesting to see what the smartalecks think.

by hooper on Dec 1, 2008 2:38 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

LOL...

The offensive guys aren’t concerned about changing to a new offense.

Ya think?!

by rblakeh on Dec 1, 2008 2:38 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Where?

is the full press conference at? I just want to see the whole thing all the way through

by govols87 on Dec 1, 2008 2:39 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Monte Kiffin is coming to UT

He just gave it away. He is only retaining the guys for which he doesn’t “already have someone lined up” for their position.

The entire defensive staff was let go.

by rblakeh on Dec 1, 2008 2:39 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

might not be able to say so until late january though

gonna be a looooooong time to keep people at bay on that one

by hal41605 on Dec 1, 2008 2:41 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

The longer he waits

the more apparent it will become

by ChattVol on Dec 1, 2008 2:42 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

yeah

He’s almost certainly bringing a lot of guys from the NFL. College staff are fair game at this point.

by rblakeh on Dec 1, 2008 2:43 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Layla Kiffin is prettier than advertised

And I say that with all due respect to women.

by rblakeh on Dec 1, 2008 2:40 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Layla....

there’s a song in there somewhere…

by hooper on Dec 1, 2008 2:43 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I heard the same feed

but I’ve not heard anything. The Giles kid seems to like him although he’s still a recruit

by ChattVol on Dec 1, 2008 2:45 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yeah

Clearly a great recruiter, but maybe he’s like Orgeron?

by rblakeh on Dec 1, 2008 2:46 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

we'll have to wait to know.

But he’s been lauded as a terrific coaching mind. And his practices at Oakland were supposed to be extremely effective and well-run.

by hooper on Dec 1, 2008 2:46 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

And undermined

But that wasn’t his fault.

by Graysnail on Dec 1, 2008 2:47 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Well, he is the QB coach

And I would not want to work for Spurrier in that capacity.

by rblakeh on Dec 1, 2008 2:52 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

wait

posted in the wrong spot. That was about Kiffin, not Reaves.

by hooper on Dec 1, 2008 2:57 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Maybe Haslam and Thunder

can leave the guy alone for a year or so.

by ChattVol on Dec 1, 2008 2:48 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Quite possibly:

Fulmer was always a great closer. Maybe Kiffin will show the same moxie.

by hooper on Dec 1, 2008 2:51 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

what movie?

I’m afraid I probably haven’t seen it.

by hooper on Dec 1, 2008 2:53 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

the movie with Ed Harris in it

Phil,GO VOLS !!!

by bulldurham on Dec 1, 2008 2:54 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

who's Ed Harris?

(Seriously. I’m culturally dysfunctional.)

by hooper on Dec 1, 2008 2:55 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

And here's where I lose all remaining street cred.

(Well, I would if I had any.)

I’ll have to look that movie up. I haven’t heard of it.

(See, they were right when they said bloggers aren’t cool in person.)

by hooper on Dec 1, 2008 2:57 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Glen Garry Glen Ross

Phil,GO VOLS !!!

by bulldurham on Dec 1, 2008 3:01 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Sorry...

went to lunch. It is Glengarry Glen Ross or however you spell it. Look up the scene on YouTube with Alec Baldwin.

by ChattVol on Dec 1, 2008 3:51 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Govolsxtra.com

reported he called J.Giles at 7am yesterday…that’s moxy

by govols87 on Dec 1, 2008 2:52 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

The Poll:

That beta distribution. It’s … beautiful!

*sniff

by hooper on Dec 1, 2008 7:49 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

In the topmost picture, the black line. It’s the same shape as the distribution to the poll answers in this post. (There are a lot of beta distribution shapes, but that particular one is the one I see the most.)

by hooper on Dec 1, 2008 8:24 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Cool, thanks

We did some stuff with cumulative distribution functions in an algorithm class, but I don’t remember much about it. I can’t remember if we did anything with probability distribution functions.

by rblakeh on Dec 1, 2008 8:47 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

You probably did. CDFs are integrated PDFs.

They’re very intuitive as well, so you’d probably understand one as soon as you saw one without even realizing you were looking at one.

That beta distribution is effectively what a normal distribution becomes when one side is squished up against a limiting factor. Usually you see it when the mean is close to zero for something that can’t be negative, yet still tries to follow a normal distribution.

[Joel’s head explodes in 3…2….]
