College football chaos and my arguments

First off College football has to be the most frustrating sport when it come to deciding who is best. At the top of the list is the media. If you are a fan of a school that the media does not seem to be in love with then you have to sit there and listen to them constantly hyping teams based on their completely biased views. Just like right now Texas, USC and Penn State. I am totally surprised that somehow somebody isn’t calling for Ohio State to get a shot. First off I believe that Texas should have went to the Big 12 championship,(but that’s another story) Two years ago Ohio State and Michigan are both undefeated and play each other and the Media screamed this is your national championship right here,,and when it was over they immediately start saying how they should play again for the national championship..”what a ridiculous concept and it is just irresponsible. What happens Ohio State goes on to get demolished by Florida and Michigan get romped by USC..What fore-site they media had. has there been anybody say that maybe Alabama and Florida should play again? No ! but there have been some say that Texas should play Oklahoma and not Florida CRAZY!!! Another one that gripes my ass is in 2003 LSU plays Oklahoma in the BCS championship but that game has to get overshadowed by the media screaming for USC. and then after LSU beats Oklahoma(the other media darling) and somehow the media comes up with this USC can still be the AP champions and for the first time since the BSC the voters go in a different direction and vote USC AP champions to share the national championship. If Oklahoma would have won I doubt that scenario would have ended up that way. Then exactly one year later Auburn goes 13-0 and does not get into the BCS championship, USC play Oklahoma and wins, and there is absolutely no talk of Auburn getting to share the National championship by getting the AP vote. Why is that? Auburn is in the SEC and is not a media darling. I will admit the BCS turned out right next year with Texas and USC what a great game. Then the next two years you get an extremely overrated Ohio State team in the BCS and they get embarrassed both times. It really is painful to listen to some of these people in the media. I really wish someday somebody could do it without bias. one of the big arguments against a playoff is that it will make the regular season illrelevant, well then what did the BCS do to it this year. look no further then Texas,Oklahoma and Texas Tech. Somehow Texas sits at home and watches two teams they beat play for the title? WOW I call BS. The BCS gave us two good bowls this year, The Rose and the Championship game. In fact it is really two national championship games because if somehow USC beats Penn State they will be voted AP champions. the other bowls Cincinatti-VT boring, Texas-ohio state who cares , why not play Texas-Alabama and let Ohio State play Utah. Oh well it is just frustrating

BCS and media

I agree with you completely, the first year of the BCS was the best. If you remember strength of schedule played a big part, losses, computers, and of course rankings by the coaches and the crappy media, it has now been changed each year to give more power to the media thus giving the media darlings their go, I think we should decide on a format and let a computer do the job!! And for those that pull for the Utah’s and Boise states of the world I have no sympathy for you, if you really want respect then go play a killer non-conference schedule. By doing this you can say to everyone else you are a quality team, I know you can’t change your in conference schedule but you can on the non-conference.

Problem is,

Utah tried to do exactly that.

Utah State is an obligatory game for them, and Weber State is not obligatory, but close. Other than that, they schedule Michigan and Oregon State. It wasn’t Utah’s fault that Michigan decided to have perhaps their worst season ever (depending on your take of Michigan’s very early years before structured schedules). Beyond the non-con, they also had wins over TCU, BYU and Air Force that cannot be considered gimmes.

Boise’s argument is weaker, given that they had Oregon as the only “respectable” noncon game. But I don’t really know that Utah could have scheduled more beef in their noncon if they had tried. It’s a lot harder for teams like Utah and Boise to get those games on their schedule than you’d think. Many big teams don’t like scheduling them due to the risk of a loss, and they really don’t like scheduling them if the non-BCS team already has a BCS big-name on their schedule.

It’ll get interesting; now that Utah has added another BCS notch under their belt, the argument of a weak undefeated schedule is really difficult to justify.

I take absolutely nothing away from Utah, however just because they went undefeated doesnt mean they should automatically win the championship. There are so many problems with everything, Like media darling Ohio State getting embarassed in the title game twice in a row, do you make the argument that they should not have been there even though the ranking and record said they should? But then Utah made Alabama look like they should not have been there and Alabama only lost in the SEC championship. I think there is just too much parody, no way to solve it except a full playoff.

one thing like you said it is hard to justify saying Utah played in a weak conference. When Utah’s conference was definately better then the Big East..

So I think Utah should be a clear number 2 but you cant rank them over Florida after what Florida accomplished on the field compared to what Utah accomplished on the field.

Fair enough.

To be honest, I don’t think you can declare any team as a consensus national champion this year with any degree of certainty. USC, like Utah, is held back by their own conference, but their one loss is no worse than Florida’s. They just weren’t given the opportunity in the postseason to bolster their argument like Florida was. So I can respect an argument for Florida, Texas, Utah and USC without any complaint. If I had a vote, it’d go to Utah, but that doesn’t mean I think it’s an unassailable position.

And I have no problem with Ohio State playing in those games. You can’t hold previous years against a team; they have no bearing on the current year. And if you want a chance for the “best” team to prove it, you have to accept that it may be a team that nobody wants to watch. If OSU happens to go to the next 5 BCS champ games in a row, everybody would be very tired of them, but that’s what the system asks for if they win their games.

BTW, thanks for the discussion.
