NFL Building?

Isn’t that what FCPF & Co. did ‘92-’08? Jus’askin.

Also, the article states that Monte could be paid “in the neighborhood of $1 million”. Is this unprecedented in the collegiate ranks or are there other assistants (namely coordinators) that are already pulling down 7-ish-figures? Is it just me, or is that absolutely assanine?

Considering how GOOD Monte Kiffin is ...

100% worth it, I think. Especially if we can build a solid staff around it.

Think about the recruiting edge this gives Tennessee.

Fair warning

Just remember how “GOOD” Dave Clawson was before he took the reins. There’s no doubt that Coach M. Kiffin is a good coach…I’m not questioning that…but what’s so wrong with having him prove at least a couple things at the collegiate level before the university pays out the wazoo for his services?

Funny about the “flashes Super Bowl ring” line…I think Charlie Weiss has used that same line a time or two. Apparently that line is the key to automatic success!!

(Sorry for the pesimism & scarcasm; just feeling jaded about the whole situation. My protective shield remains up until I have verifiable proof that the university is, indeed, better off without CPF.)

Understood on the cynicism. There was a lot about Fulmer’s release (and Tuberville’s, and many others) that doesn’t set well with the supposed ideals of college athletics. The “non-professional sport” veil is wearing extremely thin on college football in particular.

That will be the highest ever, if I understand things correctly.

Muschamp was labeled unprecedented at $1mil. I think that was part of the reason Kiffin didn’t get more – it allows him to throw more money at the staff he wants. As young as he is, that’s a bright move. Taking a little less now and (hopefully) ensuring success will give him the necessary foundation for a long future.

Do you mean Muschamp got $900,000?

That is what I understood, but my memory may be faulty.

by rblakeh on Dec 17, 2008 11:57 AM EST up reply actions

Mine is faulty as well

but if I remember right, he’s getting $900k starting in January, and he has a contract that will get him to $1M in the not too distant future.

Go Vols!

Yes. $900k.

That’s what I get for writing after 8 solid hours of presentations. Sorry.

The 1970 game between Alabama and USC has been heralded by many (usually Trojan fans) as the contest which lead to the integration of Crimson Tide football. It's nonsense, of course, but that hasn't stopped that version of the story from spreading by West Coast revisionists.

One reasons Tennessee fans should be disappointed with this sloppy telling of history is that it almost completely discounts a historic game involving the Vols a year earlier.

In 1969, Lester McClain and Jackie Walker (pictured above) started in the Third Saturday in October game and broke the color line at Birmingham's Legion Field (a third black player, Andy Bennett, got into the game as well). Not only that, the Vols handed Bear Bryant's Tide team a 41-14 beatdown that afternoon.

I tell a bit of the tale at Roll Bama Roll today in my scathing review of a book about the 1970 Alabama vs. USC game, One Night, Two Teams.
