FanShot of the Day: 2008 CFN UCLA Preview
Bumped. Wow. BYU?
This is the College Football News preview of Tennessee opponent UCLA, by Richard Cirminiello. Here are the money quotes for Vols fans:
re: the Bruins' schedule:
The Neuheisel era kicks off with a bang playing Tennessee right away before a potentially tougher game at BYU.
re: the key game
While the opener against Tennessee could be a statement game if the Bruins can pull it off, it’ll be the BYU showdown that’ll be a measuring stick.
CFN doesn't seem to give the Bruins much of a chance. What say you?

Their Sr. tailback is the one that worries me. Hopefully looking back on what Justin Forsett did to us last year in Berkeley will get the defense in gear and make them understand not to take these guys lightly.
Any word if Hank Jr. is gonna sing ??
That'd be fun . . .
. . . but I’m sure it will be some brand new pop/rock/country group that has just signed a deal with whatever affiliate of whatever company broadcasts the game. And the opening hype video is sure to feature more of them than anyone in helmets.

That reminds me of a thought I had.
I’ve always been interested how long after the “official start time” that a game actually starts. If that’s listed as a 9 PM game, I’m sure the kickoff will be at 9:13 or thereabouts. Has anybody tracked that before?
I’d love to skip the pregame network infomercialthon and self-promotiongasm jamboree – and particularly the obligatory butchering of the national anthem in 4-4 time (hey, I’m a vet; the anthem means something to me) – so that I’m not in a bad mood when foot first meets ball. Usually, I do that with the mute button, but I’d love to click it on just as the kicker finishes placing the ball on the tee. That’d be perfection.

I don't really care . . .
. . . for the MTV video before the game, but I am absolutely enthralled by the immediate pre-game hype video narrated by Lundquist or whomever’s doing the game. I love those things. Slo-mo panning of empty stadiums, quick cuts to iconic action from past games . . . cue the triplet toms and brass anthems. I’m a sucker for that stuff.
And most of them are lost b/c they don’t make it into the re-airings.
Go Vols!

Good point, that.
The nostalgic stuff is a great schtick for cfb.

One question:
The Neuheisel era kicks off with a bang playing Tennessee right away before a potentially tougher game at BYU.
Does “potentially tougher” refer to their last game against BYU or the opening game against Tennessee? The former makes more sense but the sentence structure is ambiguous and can be read as if they expect BYU to be a better team than Tennessee.
I prefer . . .
. . . to take it in the most controversial, inflammatory way. ;-) It has to be a dig on Tennessee, right?

I took it the opposite way...
...after re-reading it three or four times. I think he meant that UCLA doesn’t have much of a chance and will get to play its reserves in the second half after getting blown out. Whereas BYU is more even, and they’ll have to play their starters most of the game.
Who knows though? The only thing I’m certain of is it’s a poorly-written sentence.
"Florida didnt win their first SEC title until 1991 and now they think they invented football."
