The stats do help a bit, actually.

Tennessee rush v. UCLA defense: UCLA’s D is largely unchanged from last year and should be in good shape. Tennessee appears to be placing more of an emphasis on the run compared to last year. (Heck, it’d be hard not to.) With an intact O-line returning, UT and UCLA should be well-matched here. If one team gets a significant advantage in this phase, it might turn the game.

UCLA rush v. Tennessee defense: Both were middle-of-the-road last year. But UCLA’s huge turnover should tilt the scales here in UT’s favor. UT doesn’t have a lot of depth to give, but it’s the first game of the season and everybody’s fresh. The only concern for UT is how well the LBs read the run and contribute. If they’re on their game today, look out. If not, well, look out.

Special Teams: UCLA places a very high priority on special teams, having hired a ST coach to specifically improve that part of their game. It’s worked, too; their ST play is terrific and UT will have to be very careful. Both kickers are top-notch, and they know how to block for good return games. Frankly, this worries me the most. (To get a handle on how much ST can make a difference, try to imagine how the last 10 years would have gone for Va. Tech if their special teams were merely average. UCLA’s ST unit this year should be at least that good.)

Intangibles: I’m glad you assigned them to UCLA. They’re the home team. And Frankly, they have nothing to lose in this one. A loss is merely expected; a win would be huge for them. They can play with no fears or regrets, which is always a concern.

Here's an intangible

I hope the VOLS didn’t wash. When I was playing football at Bearden, we played Maryville and every single one of the Maryville players smelled like dirty underwear. We got clobbered. Smelling bad is one hell of a deterrent.

Good luck from over here in Berkeley.

Kick some baby bear [butt], will you? Go Vols!

(It killed me to do that, RollOnYouBears667, but the Fulmerizer never takes a day off. Thanks for the support, even after the pasting your team laid on ours last year. We’ll see if the Vols can get an extra TD in there for you. Feel free to swing by if you want during the game!)

Wow. You guys pay a lot more attention to that than we do at the California Golden Blogs. Good luck anyway, though. I’m always happy to see a UCLA loss!

Nothing to worry about.

Can't contain the unbelievable pulsing in my veins!

Oh! Feels so good to be back in the fray with y’all. Been MIA for a while now, what with the new job and the relocation and everything. Just did get my internet up and running in time for the most exciting day of the year (thus far). Absolutely can’t wait for the noise!!!

Just a couple things.

1. Look for good things out of JC. He’ll probably be a little shaky to start but once he calms down I think he’ll have a monster game. We should be able to spread the wealth around pretty good behind…

2. Foster and Hardesty’s break out of the gate. I look for them both to have a big night. We’ll probably even see Creer a bit late in the game.

3. I’m looking for four or more sacks and at least two INT’s. D-Mo should have a big night since I can’t believe that they’ll throw the ball anywhere near E-Berry unless he just wings it out of fear for his life under extreme duress.

All in all, I just can’t wait to get this thing going. I haven’t been this excited in a long time. See y’all in the in-game posting session.

GO VOLS!!!

I've got something for you young man. Ooohh, it's...Thaa Claawww! Oh, you're afraid of The Claw!!

Hooper -

what’s the rule on posting images on the thread during the game?

yes or no?

"Donny you're out of your element! Dude, the Chinaman is not the issue here!"

by LOUtheMETandNATSfan on Sep 1, 2008 5:36 PM EDT reply actions

I believe it's alright, so long as we don't get carried away with it.

The problem with pictures is twofold: they make it hard to follow comments and any conversations that develop; and (more importantly) they can cause lag problems if a thread gets long.

Joel has the final word on it, and he’ll have a much better sense of the matter, but if images are reasonably family-friendly and we don’t go all bonkers posting a bajillion of them, they will probably be alright. Discretion as to the memory size of the images would probably help, too.

This will officially be our first run with the live game thread under the new SBNation format, so Joel and I are going to be feeling things out as we go.

I’m looking forward to this game, not only for the game itself (primary reason), but to see how the thread goes and what kind of a difference it makes compared to last year.

by David Hooper on Sep 1, 2008 5:54 PM EDT up reply actions

ok

i’ve seen different reactions to images posted in numerous threads.

for example: DBays Rays (Baseball) uses an absurd amount of gifs and MIME’s and their thread seems to run pretty smoothly however it does depend on the amount of bloggers and posts. They blog more than any team I’ve seen yet.

I’ve also noticed that any blog that goes over 500 post(s) seems to slow down and an additional thread is then added.

i’ll definitely follow your rules.

"Donny you're out of your element! Dude, the Chinaman is not the issue here!"

by LOUtheMETandNATSfan on Sep 1, 2008 6:05 PM EDT reply actions

And our rules are not yet set in stone. Feel free to use images; if we notice any kind of problems because of them, we’ll let everybody know. We’ve been watching how things have been going on other sites, but we wanted to get our hands dirty here before writing any real policy on it.

Thanks for asking, by the way.

i can’t remember what year it was (I think 1987) , but I was selling water downed soda’s while walking up and down those darned steps at neyland stadium and I was done after the 3rd quarter. I left at the beginning of the 4th and I think it was 26-10, tennessee was up.

i was walking down cumberland and had just pasted VOL Books across from Pizza Hut and all of these people were gathered ’round. i asked what happened and they told me that the ball game was tied up 26-26. the game ended in a tie.

The hot trend is to defer.

If you defer and the other team elects to kickoff in the first half, you can elect to receive AGAIN in the second half.
