Play-by-Play Game Tracking
For those of you who have interest in play-by-play game notes (much like what I did for the UT-UCLA game), I'd like to have a bit of a discussion with you:
Tracking the game play-by-play can be very rewarding. When you take the time to scan each play for formations, player actions, and all the things you generally miss during live action, you really get a sense of the artistry and complexity of the game. You also learn a lot of things you never knew before. (For example, I had never paid such close attention to linebacker positioning before the snap. Boy, did that open my eyes.)
But tracking a game like that also takes a lot of time. You don't have to worry about commercials, halftime, or quarter breaks, but you can spend even more time than that by rewinding the plays to get the details right. I'd love to do that for every game, but I know it's a time commitment I can't make consistently. For example, I already know that I can't do it for the UAB game and I really don't think I can make it work for the Florida game (which really kills me, win or lose).
Well, you probably already know where this is going. If you have any interest in trying your hand at it, I'd love to know. It's not hard to do if you have about 3 hours for a full game and the ability to watch and rewind the individual plays.
So if you are interested, leave a comment below. I'd like to set up a system that allows any RTT reader to contribute if they'd like. And I'd be asking for no more than simply jotting down your observations. I can handle the postprocessing (things like making the tables and charts, and formatting it for posting on the site) pretty easily if we have a system in place.
And there'd be no pressure. If nobody wants to, that's quite alright. If you think you can for a game, then realize later it's not going to work, no problemo. I don't want to obligate anybody, but I do want to give a shot to you if you'd like to try.

No Problem
I will be happy to do it for the UAB game. I did if for a few games last year and realize how long it can take. Thanks for your work.

Sweet!
Do you have a method in mind? If not, may I suggest some tricks to make table-making easier? (If you already have a plan, then feel free to blow the rest of this off.)
I found it easiest to always write things in the same order. Then if you pick some sort of keyboard character as a break between ideas, then it gets really easy to generate tables. For example, if I use a carat as the break symbol:
1st and 10 ^ UT 32 ^ 4-3 D, man coverage ^ G-Gun offense ^ Pass deep to Brandon Warren for 68 yards and a touchdown!
Then it’s a breeze to convert a text file to a data table. Any character works fine, so long as you don’t use it for anything else. In the one I did for UCLA, I was using a colon. Problem was that I tend to use colons in my text descriptions on occasion, so I had to udno some extra breaks. No biggie; just annoying.
But again, do it however the heck you want. Keep it fun and easy on yourself.
And like Joel said, Thanks.
