Extra large hole despite being ahead in everything but the score and turnovers. P.S. Don't punt to Brandon James in the second half. Better yet. Don't punt.

Hey guys

Cal fan here; how much of this deficit is on the players and how much of it is on the coaches?

by BearsNecessity on Sep 20, 2008 5:12 PM EDT reply actions

Good question

Much is attributable to special teams breakdowns. Put that on the coaches. Put the fumble in the red zone on the players. I’d say 50/50 players/coaches. What do y’all think?

Go Vols!

Id agree

just based on initial observations. Maybe a bit more on the coaches, I dont some of the defensive playcalling (like the total lack of blitz on 3rd and 13…).

New plan

G Gun at least half the time. The rest of the time is split between Hardesty and Creer.

Biggest problem is figuring out who to get into the end zone when we get close. The best-defense-is-a-time-consuming-offense is working. Just no points.

And don’t punt to anyone in blue.

Go Vols!

The G-gun

has been remarkable. One bad play out of that setup (and with an ironically timed post), but other than that its worked well.

Just so y'all know . . .

I have resolved to be either positive or silent in the second half. At least with respect to our own team.

So here’s some positive. We’re moving the ball. They scored a bunch of points quickly, but not much after that. We could get on a roll.

turnovers UT 3 UF 0

No. The game IS over.

The new clock rules will allow Florida to run the clock out. They may need only 1 first down to kill the clock before anybody could score 4 TDs. The new rules do make game endings far less dramatic.

It's purely a time-of-game thing.

The new clock allows a 40-second runoff per play. That leaves about 25 total plays in a quarter when run right. For UT to score 3 more times, you have to assume 3 more Florida touches. Even if they go all 3-and-out, that’s 9 plays taking away 6 minutes of game time.

by Muhler on Sep 20, 2008 6:15 PM EDT up reply actions

Interesting question.

His buyout’s going to be a monster, given the near-guaranteed contract extensions. Even if he doesn’t get this year’s extension, that’s still a 6-year buyout. I’m not sure they can afford it for at least 3 more years.

by David Hooper on Sep 20, 2008 6:15 PM EDT up reply actions

If this turns into a worst-case year,

I would sooner expect Fulmer to step down than to be bought out. He still loves the school and the program. It’s going to be a matter of whether he thinks he’s lost the touch.

(That’s all speculative, of course. Not based on my feelings, which I’m not going to share.)
