Jackson the Mule says . . .

. . . wooooo, defense!!!

Another game, another ranked, defensively tough opponent for Tennessee's struggling offense. At least the Vols return to the friendly confines of an opposing team's stadium. (Kidding!) An upset could be in the making depending on four things: (1) whichever team's New Offense with a New Quarterback can find itself first and/or best against a tough defense; (2) whichever team's offense can pass the ball well enough to supplement the run; (3) whichever team wins on third down; and (4) Tennessee's punt coverage.

Auburn fan PowerOfDixieland wins this week's Hail Mary Haiku with the following:

Auburn, Tennessee;
Both can agree on two things:
Georgia, Bama suck

by PowerOfDixieland

Because PowerOfDixieland doesn't normally take part in the RTT Guessing Game, I'm awarding the HMH points to rustytanton and InBruceWeTrust for tying for second:

Tiger or Eagle?
Would you please pick a mascot?
Seriously y’all.

I say “woe is me
that still cheers for tennesee”
just masochism

Hey fellers.

Sorry I’ve been MIA but I damn near broke my left hand during the FLA gulp game so my typing has been somewhat hampered this week but I’m going to fight through it today.

GO VOLS! please

Well,... you were afraid of The Claw.

Easy, killer.

We’re gonna need you for the full season. ;-)

OMG

Ole Miss is probably gonna beat FLA and how much do we miss David Cutcliffe right now?

Well,... you were afraid of The Claw.

Duke is laying an ass-whoopin on UVA

I even saw a celebration penalty called on Duke for diving into the end zone. Coach Cut’s got them playing some ball.

If Ole Miss happens to win,

then that’d be the first loss that UT needs to overtake Florida.

Informal poll question:

Are you getting tired of hearing announcers say things along the line of, “You gotta get the ball in the hands of your playmakers.” ?

by David Hooper on Sep 27, 2008 3:12 PM EDT reply actions

Really?

I never thought about getting the ball to playmakrs. Maybe we oughtta do that.

Well,... you were afraid of The Claw.

by XRayVol on Sep 27, 2008 3:19 PM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

Yeah

I was gonna say that I’m less tired of hearing it than in watching us get the ball to our most experienced guys at the expense of getting it to guys like Jones, Berry.

Go Vols!

by Joel Hollingsworth on Sep 27, 2008 3:21 PM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

But it's not a new concept.

That’s been a fundamental premise of football since the 1800’s. It’s just that the announcers use that line instead of actually suggesting ways a particular offense can have success.

It’s a catch-all phrase that announcers use to sound smart, even though it applies to every single game.

by David Hooper on Sep 27, 2008 3:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah

It’s a matter of degree and emphasis, though. Every team has a group of great players and a handful of absolute standouts. How much are the standouts involved? At FL, every play.

Go Vols!

by Joel Hollingsworth on Sep 27, 2008 3:37 PM EDT up reply actions

That guy in motion

That Ole Miss runs on most plays really slows the defense down. A lot. We should look at that. I vote for Lucas Taylor when in the G-Gun.

Wow

not much life in our team coming onto the field

Well,... you were afraid of The Claw.

by XRayVol on Sep 27, 2008 3:31 PM EDT reply actions

Honestly, I think the team will be relieved to be in Auburn.

It’s one thing to hear boos from opposing fans. It’s another thing entirely to hear boos from your own fans. Right now, Neyland is a liability, not an advantage.

by David Hooper on Sep 27, 2008 3:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Play better the boos go away

It’s real simple even Phil Fulmer should be understand that. He couldn’t understand what happened against Florida.

Deferring is for p_ssies. Make a decision!

Sure.

I’m not offering judgment over it, just an observation.

by David Hooper on Sep 27, 2008 3:36 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm offering judgment.

They’re kids. All of ‘em. And they can’t tell whether the boos are directed at the coaches. Unacceptable.

by Joel Hollingsworth on Sep 27, 2008 4:03 PM EDT reply actions

Well

I’m probably speaking out of turn here but here goes

Typically we are a pass heavy team. We’ve been Wide Reciever U for so long we expect to have receivers who catch the ball, make yards and move out smartly.

We’ve had dependable running backs on the ground game, and we’ve even had outstanding ones. Our defense has never been our strongest point in my mind. Sure we’ve had good ones, but its not an area we’ve stood out like our passing games.

This season is quite the opposite. We have a decent defense, maybe even a good one. We have a nonexistent air game. Our running game is being pressured because opposing teams know we can’t throw the ball.

End result? Instead of making progress our defense ends up playing 10 minutes of 15 and by the end of the game they are done in. Our offense sits on the sidelines and asks “What did we do wrong?”

I just don’t know what they can do to fix it at this point in the season short of back wrapping duct tape over our receivers hands

and let us see if it’s the QB or the OC

I have to agree

At this point we can’t do any worse than what we are offensively. Let him try. Crompton has had 2 years and 4 games to step to the plate and execute smartly and has yet to do so.

Lets swap it up and make it happen.

It's like we were saying earlier

The QB is a learning position this year, either way. If one clearly isn’t working, it makes perfect, actual sense to try the other.

Crompton

hasn’t proven himself.

Why keep letting him when there’s a backup waiting to be “the next peyton manning” <— stretch of the imagination

Is there a Little League

team near the campus?

Sorry I’m a little vindictive now.

I’m miles from home.
I have no beer.
My team is losing again.
And our Quarterback could be replaced with a small hairless poodle.

Yeah

As I said I’m just vindictive atm

I get worried about the way our secondary tackles.

I see two UT guys hitting each other a lot as they try to hit the runner. I foresee injuries if they don’t get that fixed.

Ok, I'm curious about that last play call.

you have to expect Auburn to defend the middle area. That means the LBs are in great shape to stop a QB sneak.

Good thinking.

Don’t touch a rolling punt, even when it stops. more time off the clock.

by David Hooper on Sep 27, 2008 4:58 PM EDT reply actions

If we don't change something

We’re going to get a punt blocked in the 2nd half.

Go Vols!

I have an idea.

Let’s not have any more 4th downs!

Let's be fair.

Crompton hasn’t been as good as Fulmer is painting the picture to be. He hasn’t been bad, but he hasn’t been ok.

With that said, let’s get some 2nd-half adjustments in and win!

by David Hooper on Sep 27, 2008 5:00 PM EDT reply actions

I'm trying to be optimistic here.

There’ll be plenty of time for the negatives after the season.

by David Hooper on Sep 27, 2008 5:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Besides, we might as well try 2nd-half adjustments. They seem to work for everybody else.

by David Hooper on Sep 27, 2008 5:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, but we’re maverics. We don’t do what works for everybody else.

Well,... you were afraid of The Claw.

True.

A win here puts us right back in the SEC race. Gotta come out sharp!

by bobo_the_vol on Sep 27, 2008 5:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Lets look at this another way

Crompton can scramble. Lets use it. Make him an alternate running back. Use the G Gun and put our 2nd string in to throw Cromtpon in a RB/WR position and Jones off side and lets see what happens. We got nothing to lose by playing the gambler at the moment

by Joseph Stanley on Sep 27, 2008 5:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Crompton has been pretty bad

5-14 for 52 yards with no dropped passes is pretty bad.

Okay . . .

NO MORE TURNOVERS

We’ve played very well so far

by bobo_the_vol on Sep 27, 2008 5:01 PM EDT reply actions

Some ugly coaching changes as of late:

Michigan, Arkansas.

We’ll have to be careful what we wish for.

by David Hooper on Sep 27, 2008 5:05 PM EDT reply actions

Ditto

I don’t want to lose Fulmer.

Unfortunately if we lose this season I see that as a foregone conclusion.

We live in a Microwave world and everyone wants what they want in 30 seconds or less hot and ready to go

by Joseph Stanley on Sep 27, 2008 5:07 PM EDT up reply actions

If ..

we lose this one + drop Georgia, then I think I’ll call for Fulmer’s head. Maybe.

by bobo_the_vol on Sep 27, 2008 5:06 PM EDT reply actions

I'll call for Cromptons

"Gentlemen, it is better to have died as a small boy than to fumble this football." John Heisman

by Joseph Stanley on Sep 27, 2008 5:08 PM EDT up reply actions

On a related note,

the fumble was credited to Crompton, not Foster.

by David Hooper on Sep 27, 2008 5:08 PM EDT up reply actions

My biggest wish is that we'd get our fans back.

Fulmer or not, it’s really depressing to have Neyland be a favorable environment for the road team.

by David Hooper on Sep 27, 2008 5:08 PM EDT reply actions

That's what's worst for me as well

Come to give your full-throated support to our boys or stay the eff home. I don’t care HOW bad they’re playing.

The solution is obvious: Play better

If you build it, they will come.

Deferring is for p_ssies. Make a decision!

by wvvol on Sep 27, 2008 5:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Yup

Home field advantage should remain that

My biggest value is that until recently Vols fans would stay at a game until the bitter end

But now they are acting like spoiled Arkansas fans. Leave at the 3rd Quarter. Boo the team.

Its not a team effort. You love your team when they win. You cry for them when they lose.

Its not about winning a championship every game, sure we’d love it, but its about knowing your team is there for you and them knowing you got their back every step of the way.

Sometimes you get the dog, some times the dog gets you
