Perfect time for the bye week

Early game thoughts: I like Oklahoma over Texas. Two one-point losses to good teams, Texas hasn’t really played anyone yet, Sam Bradford factor…could be a big day for upsets

by Will on Oct 17, 2009 12:11 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Yeah

I think Texas is overrated and OU is underrated. I still think Texas is the better team, but not as much better as everybody thinks.

by Incipient_Senescence on Oct 17, 2009 12:19 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I actually think OU is the better team,

but you can’t ignore the losses, no matter how they came.

But having this QB shuffle due to Bradford’s injuries has to hurt their chances some.

by Hooper on Oct 17, 2009 12:43 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well

OU opening up with a pair of big plays. Only a FG off the first one. We’ll see about #2.

Uh oh

Bradford’s shoulder

by Will on Oct 17, 2009 12:22 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Oh

And there goes Sam Bradford. Shoulder re-injury.

by Incipient_Senescence on Oct 17, 2009 12:22 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

He needs to shut it down

Landry Jones can play, and Bradford is risking millions of dollars out there

These are the days having ESPN GamePlan is a blessing and a curse

Those are the only two worth watching right now…but come 3:30 I usually find myself changing channels so much that I miss most of what’s actually going on.

by Will on Oct 17, 2009 12:31 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah

I get to get a shower, eat lunch, get groceries, all at some point today. But I have too many games on at once, so I can’t time halftimes.

Also

Watch the latest episode of Dollhouse on Hulu. Best show on TV right now.

by Incipient_Senescence on Oct 17, 2009 12:33 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Most of my friends are hooked on that show

I sat down and watched one with them from late in the first season and had no idea what was going on, got the sense I needed to start from the beginning.

by Will on Oct 17, 2009 12:36 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah

There’s definitely a consistent story arc that picks up about halfway through season one (episode 6 or 7). Before that, you could skip episodes and be alright. But the show has also gotten dramatically better since the story arc got up and running. I just love Joss Whedon though. Firefly is my favorite show ever.

Georgia screws up a punt return

They had a TD if the blockers actually did something, but they just provided an entourage instead of blocking the men pursuing from behind (who caught Miller from behind). Next play, UGA throws a pick in the end zone.

OU's kicker is scary

But he’s made a couple, albeit barely.

So if Vandy's somehow able to win, does that mean they're also an adequate team?

So far, Wisconsin is giving Iowa a great fight.

But their RB just had a naaaasty ankle injury. I’m guessing he’s done for the year.

No John Clay = so much for the upset bid.

Nice fanke punt by Vandy.

Using that goofy spread-block formation UT used last year, the deep blockers simply ran forward and cleared the way for the punter to get the 5 yards for the first. Nice effort by Vandy.

This OU team concerns me.

Not that they have a shot at the title game, but this is unfolding eerily like my NCAA ’10 season, where I played a 2-loss OU team in the national championship game – and a 12-1 Texas was on the sidelines. Just like last year!

12-1?

Did Texas go to the Big 12 title game, then? And OU go to the NC without playing for the conference championship?

Yes.

It was great. I didn’t play the title game until my Texas friend had a chance to see it. The ensuing tirade was fantastic.

Is it possible

that Texas is just not very good at all?

by Will on Oct 17, 2009 1:02 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I've actually been wondering that, but afraid to say anything.

They struggled against Colorado and Wyoming already, but pulled away in the second halves due to greater depth of talent and wearing the other team out. But if OU can build a 2-3 score halftime lead, they have the talent depth to hold it.

by Hooper on Oct 17, 2009 1:03 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm less than impressed with Greg Davis as an OC.

That may have something to do with it. (FWIW, I’ve been less than impressed with him; you can win at Texas if you recruit well, even if you have suboptimal schemes.)

But Texas has had some really dumb penalties, and they’re getting outschemed badly on the offensive side of the ball so far.

Oh, you better believe it.

I don’t think they’ll end up as a legitimate national title contender – I’m thinking the general thought pattern is the Big East is in the BCS in name only – but 12-0 is a fair shot for them.

Can ND please, please, please keep Weis for another season?

That is a very legitimate concern right now.

The problem is, I don’t want ND to do well enough to slide into a BCS bowl, even if that’s what it’d take to keep him.

Really, I don’t want them in a bowl game at all.

I don't think it'd take a BCS game necessarily.

I think they can handle a USC loss and one more loss, but that’s it. Three more losses (including USC) might be enough to do the trick.

Or was that last year? IIRC, last year was when the O-line was injured, but I lose track.

But I think the problem’s been there for longer and it’s more fundamental. You can hide OL problems when you have a guy like Moreno who can shed 2-3 guys regularly.

The OU player didn’t have possession of the ball long enough for it to be a fumble, and you can’t advance a muff, so Texas ball at the spot of their recovery.

Who takes Ohio State’s position in the top 12? My initial thought was LSU, but I’m still skeptical of the Tigers. If Nebraska gets an impressive win over TTech, I think they’ll get my vote. Penn State is also a consideration.

My poll looks like this

Top five:

Bama
Florida
Texas
Boise
VT

Next seven:
Oregon
USC
Ohio State
Iowa
Miami
Cincy
TCU

All in no particular order. Texas and Boise may well drop out of my top 5, and OSU is obviously dropping out of my top 12

You're right

And I personally don’t have that ceiling for Boise. I had them #4 this week. I just happened to watch the Tulsa game. After escaping a I-AA team two weeks ago, a last minute victory over Tulsa (who lost 45-0 to OU) is worthy of a drop. You get one unimpressive week, two in a row drops you. Right now, Oregon is the only thing keeping Boise in the conversation.

Nebraska is back within 14. It would be closer if they hadn’t gotten themselves a 2nd and goal from the 25 (resulting in no points).

Florida/Texas dilemma

I feel justified in dropping Texas out of the top five. I don’t feel like doing the same to Florida. But they had similar performances, and Texas’ was against better competition. Here is my thinking, tell me if it’s right:

1. Texas has been less impressive than Florida until now
2. Texas was not overlooking this game. Florida might’ve been after a big win last week.
3. Texas needed five TOs from the other team to win, while Florida won IN SPITE of FOUR turnovers.

by Incipient_Senescence on Oct 17, 2009 7:04 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

So you think the reasoning there is solid?

5. Iowa
6. Texas

If GT holds...

we get the disastrous three-team-tie in the ACC Coastal that’ll eventually go to the BCS tiebreaker that “screwed” Texas last season if VT/GT/Miami win out. This also puts the UT/VT Chick-Fil-A Bowl scenario back on the table that I’m equal parts eager for and terrified of

by Will on Oct 17, 2009 8:25 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

by Incipient_Senescence on Oct 17, 2009 8:27 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Oh, don't worry about a UT/VT matchup.

After all, VT’s only true strength is their special teams, which

…oh.

by Hooper on Oct 17, 2009 8:28 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think

that Miami would win that tiebreaker via their win over Oklahoma giving them a boost in the nonconf. I’m sure the television folks would love Miami in the chickfila if not, but VT sells tickets like mad.

by Will on Oct 17, 2009 8:30 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

The ACC tiebreaker is a bit different

If the top two teams are within 5 spots in the BCS, it reverts to head-to-head. The “Texas rule.” So if VT stays within 5 of Miami (and they are the top 2), then VT gets the BCS and Miami gets the Chick-fil-a. Unless Miami gets an at-large and GT stays in Atlanta again. Lots of possibilities.

It's not looking pretty.

We can’t have an Auburn repeat. Crompton needs to keep the Offense on the field. He doesn’t need 300 yards passing; just sustained drives.

Yeah

Our offense needs to stay on the field.

We need to make them throw.

And Colorado wins.

Moral of the story: nepotism is bad.

Yeah

His Dad’s the coach. He’s gotten the 2nd most playing time of anyone this year and last year, despite only being marginally better than his competitors. But by the end of it, it turned out that he came into his own and really made the difference in some key games.

There were about 4 players all fighting for one spot. All were roughly even.

Coach stuck with his son, and the gamble appears to have paid off. Although right now, US fans are looking for a some way to manipulate the lineup to get 2-3 of those players on the field at once.

Well, if we can get 8 points next week

We’ll have exceeded Arkansas, Ole Miss, and South Carolina

I really hope my computer moves Alabama over Florida.

I’ll probably override if it doesn’t, but it’d be nicer if I didn’t have to.

Well, time to turn the hate on

51 weeks out of the year, I have mostly respect for Alabama. It’s usually this time of year that I remember how much I actually hate them.

Enjoyed it folks – have a good night.

Honeymoon over?

From TET’s game thread:

If I’m Gene Chizik

I punch Gus Malzhan in the mouth.

That was an EMBARRASSMENT!!!

Who is RUNNING THIS F’n TEAM!!!

On what day did the Lord create Bear Bryant and couldn’t he have rested on that day too?

I’m not sure we ever recommended that style of coach-to-coordinator discussion even when Clawson was here…
