Crazy thought question for you:
If the NFL draft were held prior to National Signing Day, would it hurt Florida’s recruiting? The NFL seems to be very lukewarm about taking Tebow high in the draft.
I wish we could see the downfield action on plays.
I can’t tell if MSU has excellent coverage or if Tebow is indecisive, but he’s not looking sharp on bootlegs.
On the draft subject. . .
Does anyone think right now that Crompton gets picked up? He clearly won’t go on the first day with his history, but I’m starting to think that someone’s going to take a late-round flier on him. Still has all the physical tools, and it looks like his brain is coming along.
by Incipient_Senescence on Oct 24, 2009 8:58 PM EDT reply actions
He'll get a shot.
Either late second day or UDFA, but he’s got the arm they love to see. It’ll be a matter of his mental evals once he’s in a camp, and that’s something the teams know they’ll have to see for themselves.
But he’s learned to be a game manager who’s willing to throw a ball away if he thinks the play is too well covered. That’s a big, big deal in the League.

Also
Can we please replay Auburn and UCLA? Both teams on bad skids right now.

Heh
danged lag in comment visibility. Concur, obviously.
by David Hooper on Oct 24, 2009 9:02 PM EDT up reply actions
Yeah
I can see that. I think we would destroy Auburn right now. And I think we’d beat UCLA by two scores.
If this game is used as motivation and doesn’t spark a letdown, I really don’t think we’ll lose another game. Ole Miss has the defense to hang around, but their offense is much worse than ours. I think we’re better than Carolina, and I don’t think it’s particularly close. Kentucky is playing better and better, but I just don’t think they have a defense that will hold our offense down.
by Incipient_Senescence on Oct 24, 2009 9:05 PM EDT up reply actions
Kentucky's problem at the end of the season has always been depth.
They’ve never had a team with enough players to hold together late, and UT has always benefitted. I think that’ll happen again, as their bye week was a long time ago.
by David Hooper on Oct 24, 2009 9:06 PM EDT up reply actions
Yeah
I really think I’m only worried about that because I’m going to it with my UK girlfriend. I’ve never seen a UT loss in person, and witnessing the end of the streak would be devastating.
And this may sound over-confident or masochistic, but I’d love to see us play LSU at the end of this season. If things go as I expect, it’d be a matchup of the East #2 and the West #2. And I think we’d win, 1-3 conference record be damned.
by Incipient_Senescence on Oct 24, 2009 9:10 PM EDT up reply actions
I think so, too.
UT is on a far better trajectory.

Beautiful solo tackle by LSU #5.
And by “solo”, I mean it. He was the one carrying the ball. Nobody near him. Straight to the turf.
I haven't been watching TCU
But I think they’re now worthy of your top 5 jump, Hooper. The stats suggest that they have been very strong against BYU and have outplayed them much more than Florida State did (I still maintain FSU had a fluky score because of all the turnovers. Their D did nothing). 24-7 road lead right now.
Also, I wonder what your computer will think of our game today. The WL and rushing offense columns will go down, but we should gain in pretty much every other area. After USC’s loss to Bama bumped them up by 2, I wouldn’t be surprised to see our loss bump us near the top 25.
by Incipient_Senescence on Oct 24, 2009 9:19 PM EDT reply actions
I'm curious too.
I can’t update the data until about noonish tomorrow, but the SOS numbers probably won’t come around until the evening.
The W/L weight is prohibitive and will keep up out of the top 25, but probably still top 40. Given our Strength of Schedule, we’ll probably make a strong run for the ’25 if we win out.
by David Hooper on Oct 24, 2009 9:21 PM EDT up reply actions
C'mon, Hooper
You know better than that. Just “probably” still top 40. We were 33 last week. No way that loss drops us eight spots. In fact, I think that we will jump. South Carolina moved up after a loss to Alabama because their SOS went up. Well our SOS went up and we improved in a few statistical categories. So I wouldn’t be shocked to see us in the high 20s or still in the low 30s. I don’t know if a USC win alone will do it, but I think wins over USC, Memphis, and Ole Miss would put a 6-4 UT team in the top 25.
I do know that W/L is prohibitive and hurts us drastically. Just for fun, I ran last week’s numbers with W/L set to 0, just to see how much the computers liked us based on the rest of the resume. You know where we’d be? #15. Gotta win those close games.

Good points on that.
Be sure to hound me if I don’t update that sheet for you this week, by the way. I really appreciate the way you all are going through it.
by David Hooper on Oct 24, 2009 9:33 PM EDT up reply actions
This Auburn loss will hurt SOS as well, though.
So much of UT’s ranking will depend on teams 25-45. But you’re probably right that they won’t fall that much. The defensive numbers look really good – especially the no touchdowns bit.
by David Hooper on Oct 24, 2009 9:41 PM EDT up reply actions
And tied.
25 minutes to go, and MSU is definitely in this one.
by David Hooper on Oct 24, 2009 9:30 PM EDT up reply actions
You realize that 2 MSUs are making upset bids, right?
Sparty still leads Iowa, although the Hawkeyes are about to score.
Also, Vandy leads USC.
by Incipient_Senescence on Oct 24, 2009 9:31 PM EDT up reply actions
what are the predictions for the rest of the year??
If continue to progress like we have, I think we may win out. Maybe an Outback Bowl bid
That Clemson OT win over Miami is huge for TCU.
It helps Clemson’s strength of schedule and helps offset that destruction of Virginia by Georgia Tech.
Good game in Starkville tonight.
16-13 UF lead heading into the fourth. If MSU had anything resembling talent on offense…
back to UT
I know what a huge win it would have been today, but just in terms of bowl selection, what would likely have been the difference? capital one vs. outback?
Game Florida.
MSU just doesn’t have the offense to come back on two scores, and Florida is going to absolutely shut down their passing game for fear of interceptions.
people probably thought that about Tennessee too
but yes. This is probably it

Boy, LSU is a survivor.
For as horrible as they’ve looked this year, they’re still only one close loss to Florida from undefeated. I just can’t wrap my mind around that.
2 seconds left
MSU up on Iowa by 4. Iowa at the 5.
by Incipient_Senescence on Oct 24, 2009 10:20 PM EDT reply actions
Apparently Iowa won though
TD as time expired.

speaking of ugly winners
USC beat Vandy by 4. Gametracker says that Vandy was deep in USC territory when hit by a 24-yard penalty. I don’t even know what sort of penalty that could be.

Intentional Grounding.
It’s a spot foul.

The QB was 24 yards deep in the pocket?
by Incipient_Senescence on Oct 24, 2009 10:31 PM EDT up reply actions
I didn't see the play.
But that’s what the play writeup said.
I’m guessing he just kept backing up waiting for somebody to get open.
by David Hooper on Oct 24, 2009 10:32 PM EDT up reply actions
LSU QB Jefferson just got rocked on a blitz.
The hit took his helmet off and he’s just sitting on his can waiting for the trainers.
By the way, check out the drive charts on GameCast for the UT/Alabama game.
1st quarter was Alabama’s, but the night steadily progressed to UT. 4th quarter was absolutely dominant for UT.
Just finished watching the game
b/w FL and MSU. I noticed the play clock even when the runner was dragged out of bounds. I had a question about the clock when TN went against FL when the refs kept the clock moving. I’m sure it’s been talked to death, but I need clarification if anyone knows what I’m talking about.
The TV clock is not synced with the official time clock.
Sometimes the TV guy lags the official guy and has to wait until his clock gets down to where the real clock stopped.

SEC on ESPN
I realized tonight how great this contract is.
iowa is undefeated and is playing a night game, but it’s nowhere to be found because every ESPN channel has an SEC game on. Even South Carolina/Vanderbilt! ha
BTW
For a semi-formal estab like Bonefish, the place was “rowdy” after the onsides kick was recovered. Fun times.
I bet. Hope you had a fun night anyhow.

Thanks.
Me and the wife enjoyed ourselves. She’s never been a football fan, but tonight has flipped a switch. She’s watched every game on TV tonight and she wants to go to Homecoming. Who am I to say no?
come to South Carolina instead
much more fun

Sweet!
I don’t have plans to go there, but if I go to homecoming, I’ll try to swing by and say hi.

announcer didn't want Auburn to score
after they called a timeout w/ 8 seconds left. Les Miles put the 1st team D back in up 31-3.
I'd much rather be the Tennessee fanbase this weekend than the Auburn fanbase.
Lots more hope at the moment.

I can't understand how USC always loses to one Pac-10 cupcake every year?
They look so good in all their other games. I’d like to see them play an SEC team in the national championship… but I’m not sure an SEC could beat them right now…
Ok. I'm good with that
I was afraid they were going to pull a black/orange jersey.
No chance.
The UTAD has pretty well killed any conversation of that. Hamilton’s even been careful to reinforce that in some of his Tweets.
by David Hooper on Oct 24, 2009 11:05 PM EDT up reply actions
I hope so.
This game should be great for recruiting.

says that Charlie Strong is likely to be their next coach.

Speaking of coaching changes...
Louisville may end up w a big name coach. I’ve heard Gruden, Fulmer, and Tuberville all mentioned. I’d be surprised if it were the latter two
that wasted timeout on the extra point
might come back to bite OSU
