SEC Power Poll: Rocky Top Talk Ballot
Here is RTT's ballot for the SEC Power Poll. I made some adjustments to the computer numbers because a lot of teams are bunched very closely together, and head-to-head suggested a human override. Here is the ballot proper, and the numbers follow below.
- Florida Gators
- Alabama Crimson Tide
- LSU Tigers
- Mississippi Rebels
- Georgia Bulldogs
- Auburn Tigers
- Tennessee Volunteers
- South Carolina Gamecocks
- Arkansas Razorbacks
- Kentucky Wildcats
- Mississippi St. Bulldogs
- Vanderbilt Commodores
I moved Georgia up (from below South Carolina to above Auburn) based on the seasonal results so far. But in all honesty, these four teams are close enough to be in any particular order. Looking at the end schedules, Tennessee has the best chance to move upwards with the best opportunity for two more wins and some healthy stat-padding (assuming all goes as expected). Auburn, Georgia, and South Carolina all face uphill battles against Alabama, Georgia Tech, and Clemson, respectively. But Mississippi has moved clear of the pack by a modest margin, and the top three are nearly unchallengeable at this point. Arkansas and Kentucky look to end the season above average, though UK's games against Georgia and Tennessee won't be easy.

But, but, but
We beat Georgia. Actually, out of all the matchups containing those four teams, only two had decisive results (i.e. more than one score): UT over UGA and UT over USC. So I would argue that these are the most relevant to take into account when doing head-to-head adjustments.

I was torn on that one.
And I can still adjust it prior to tomorrow evening. The main reason I moved Georgia up so far was because they played rather well against Auburn, while UT really didn’t look good on Saturday. I don’t know. I could rank them all as tied, honestly. Or maybe just UT and UGA as tied. I hadn’t thought about that until just now.

Also keep in mind that (with one sad, sad exception) in every game amongst the four
The home team has won. Which means that maybe there is no noticeable head to head difference and we should just rank them like the computer says.
Perhaps the idea of a tie works better. I do think that South Carolina should be at the bottom of the group though, being 0-2 against the others.

Yeah, normally I'd agree
But I think the respective records are quite different, though, aren’t they? If so, I’m okay with us being below GA.

I'm kinda not okay with it
(1) We crushed them. Like a serious beating. Like a “somebody make that man put the cat-of-nine-tails away” beating.
(2) They struggled with a team that we didn’t necessarily crush, but spanked several times with a metal spoon (Spurrier)
(3) The only common opponent we have with different outcomes is other than Spurrier is Auburn. They barely beat Auburn. Auburn barely beat us.
(4) If we were to play Georgia again tomorrow — heck, in Athens — we would once again crush them. Of this much I am confident. Their defense had absolutely zero, count them zero, answers for Jonathan “The Surgeon” Crompton.
So the best argument for moving Georgia up over is that we laid an egg after three of our guys got arrested and a huge emotional letdown game? And you still moved them up anyway?

Hmm.
And if you believe that the computer undervalues offense (which I do), it would only reinforce the computer’s rankings.
It'll work itself out
if Georgia finishes 8-4 (which means beating Georgia Tech), they deserve to be ahead of us.
