Vnaderbilt shot the ball awful
Ogilvy wasn’t good. But Cincy looked solid. I think the Big East is going to be really good again this year
SEC off to a terrible start in the non-con
Miami beat South Carolina by 15, Louisville beat Arkansas by 30, Villanova beat Ole Miss by 12, Cincy beats Vandy today by 9, all supposed SEC tourney contenders…this goes with Rider beating Mississippi State and Cornell beating Alabama. A win by the Vols tonight would be, by far, the best SEC win of the season.

Better than Kentucky over Miami(OH)?
Because that was pretty epic.

Re: SEC non-conf wins
Vandy does have an away win over WCC giant Santa Clara. Who knows how good they are this year with their best player in the NBA, but it’s a respectable win.

Isn't Gonzaga in the WCC?
Patty Mills made that team, more or less.

I didn't say the ONLY WCC giant
But they did send multiple teams to the NCAAs last year, and SC was one of them.

Halftime Stats of Note
Incredibly even…both teams 12-15 at the line, Vols 13 of 30, Purdue 14 of 31.
Purdue +2 rebs, +1 turnovers, assists dead even, fouls 12 apiece.
Only UT advantage is from 3 – Vols 3 of 9, Purdue 2 of 11
Are Hopson's stats as bad as he looks?
And does anyone else think Woolridge should be replaced with Steven Pearl?

it’ll be the same old story. No free throw ability.
we're actually 21 of 26
just not making the right ones at the right time

As bad as our shooting was tonight, there's no reason to blame the refs.
This team needs to learn to play through games that are officiated this way.
Tyler Smith
has a good looking beard….almost Baron Davis smooth
This is a scary reminder of last year
Granted Purdue is better than, say…Alabama…but still…I’m not overly encouraged. Now, it is only November. Last year’s team didn’t get any better as the season went on. That remains to be seen with this group.
are you kidding me
this team is light years ahead
I've only caught a few minutes
The half court offense has been a bit stagnant for my taste. I’ll admit that I’m being overly pessimistic.
No.
But I guess they missed one.

Agreed
But hopefully Hummel chokes. No offense.

32 seconds is not
what I’d call the right time to freeze the shooter.
chism for 3?????
Living in Alabama is like living 50 years in the past, they are still just as racist, just as educated, the state constitution forbids any kind of public transportation, and all they can talk about is Bear Bryant
Can't fault him for that
It’s his shot.

Credit the refs
They swallowed the whistles there at the end.

tight game, though.

HORRIBLE POSESSION
get CHISM and Smith down low
YES!
all you need is 2, and you might draw a foul!
by golfballs03 on Nov 23, 2009 10:47 PM EST up reply actions
yes
but Bruce usually never calls timeout in that situation
by Will Shelton on Nov 23, 2009 10:49 PM EST up reply actions
both teams had the two timeouts to prepare for the final possession
no need to call it if you are comfortable with the play.
You can't sit on a lead and run a few plays into the line and just kill the clock. You've got to throw the ball over the goddamn plate and give the other man his chance. That's why baseball is the greatest game of them all.

I'm still very apprehensive about this season
Last year the close games killed us. We just couldn’t win games at the last second.
by Incipient_Senescence on Nov 23, 2009 10:49 PM EST reply actions
I'll give Chism this much:
the way we sapped some time off the clock, he might not have been 100% that he had enough time to drive for the basket. If so, it’s better to get any shot off than none at all.
He probably should've driven
But he’s a good 3 point shooter, and no one was anywhere near him.
by Incipient_Senescence on Nov 23, 2009 10:50 PM EST up reply actions
I liked the shot at the time
going back on TiVo, he took it with :05 left, two guys in the lane with Tyler…can’t fault him for pulling the trigger
by Will Shelton on Nov 23, 2009 10:51 PM EST up reply actions
he had enough time methinks
because there was time to slap the ball around several times after the long rebound. Don’t need a 3 when 2 wins the game.
Cannons... fire them.
www.BucEm.com - SBNation's home for discussion of all things regarding the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Yeah, he had the time.
I don’t know if he knew that, though. He may have been worried that there was less, saw the shot, so took it.
by David Hooper on Nov 23, 2009 10:55 PM EST up reply actions
not that late into it, though
A timoeout early in the possession, yes. one with 5 seconds left…
by David Hooper on Nov 23, 2009 10:56 PM EST up reply actions
exactly
call it when you cross half court so your team is aware of how much time and give them some options. that is not the shot you want down by 1
by golfballs03 on Nov 23, 2009 10:57 PM EST up reply actions
I think you have to call time out,
rather than go off half-cocked with the game on the line.
Cannons... fire them.
www.BucEm.com - SBNation's home for discussion of all things regarding the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Possibly so.
I’m just worried about another season of outside clanks (and makes) where they should pound the ball into the paint and use your size and athleticism on higher-percentage shots.
Cannons... fire them.
www.BucEm.com - SBNation's home for discussion of all things regarding the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
true.
and I’m just trying to find the possibilities. I have no idea what was in his head, naturally.
But we do know that this team can play much better. Hopson was off and McBee was tentative. Improving those two would make a huge difference alone.

I don't know.
Give us a game with some actual tempo, and I really like our chances.
by David Hooper on Nov 23, 2009 10:58 PM EST up reply actions
like tonight?
we played up tempo against UNC-Asheville
by golfballs03 on Nov 23, 2009 11:01 PM EST up reply actions
actual tempo meaning more than one minute without a foul.
by David Hooper on Nov 23, 2009 11:01 PM EST up reply actions
I grant this: most calls were technically legitimate
but a lot of legit calls were ones that don’t normally get called. Both sides had trouble adapting to the sensitivity of the refs.
by David Hooper on Nov 23, 2009 11:02 PM EST up reply actions
No doubt
trouble seems to find Calipari… but I’m sure UK fans will tell is it’s all just a big coincidence.

whats important is to learn an improve from a game like this
an early loss can be a positive for a team. we need to do that. for as sloppy as we played and as poorly as we shot, losing by 1 to a team like purdue is not so bad
Scotty Hopson
last two games: 5 of 20
We’ve got Charleston, ETSU, MTSU and Wyoming before it gets serious again at Southern Cal on December 19…he’s gotta find it again before then
He was our 2nd worst player tonight (Woolridge)
I half wanted us to close with Maze/Goins/Tatum/Chism/Tyler
by Incipient_Senescence on Nov 23, 2009 10:56 PM EST up reply actions
Good game
I think Maze should have just taken it to the rack again on the last possession. Sometimes I think he forgets that he has that ability.

Completely agree.
Disappointed that Wayne for 3 was the best we could get at the end. I know he can make it but that doesn’t make it a high percentage shot.
Good game by the vols, very entertaining.
by Prometheus1185 on Nov 23, 2009 10:58 PM EST up reply actions
he was our second leading scorer with 13
and did a great job a couple of possessions earlier. I’m sure most/all of our end of game scenarios involve Tyler/Wayne/Hopson taking the shot though, and Maze may not be coached to go score
by Will Shelton on Nov 23, 2009 10:58 PM EST up reply actions
Ridiculous, both ways.
I’m amazed the players managed to make it such a great game with all the ticky-tacky crap going both ways.
It's hard.
You a Purdue fan? Can’t tell from your profile.
I don’t know about Purdue, but I do know that start-stop ball hurts our squad. They have to learn to play through that.
by David Hooper on Nov 23, 2009 11:01 PM EST up reply actions
Yeah.
Purdue boards here are a little slow =/
Slow probably benefits us, but having our most important player on the bench for 25 minutes for touch fouls sure doesn’t.
No. That really hurt you.
I don’t think the calls gave anybody a noticeable advantage. Just … frustrating.

I am NOT knocking coach Pearl, he is the man, I’m just curious. Seems like we always either come so close to winning or get knocked out prematurely….

Purdue by 6? That’s the definition of a tight game.

But I can’t remember anything bigger.

From Jay Williams at ESPN:
@RealJayWilliams In that situation, @WayneChism has to drive to the basket and either make a play or get fouled. Can’t take a 3 down
it was so wide
that was a terrible blunder

a 7 seed?
@franfraschilla Nice nail-biter in the Virgin Islands as Purdue holds on to beat the Vols. Good 2-7 NCAA match-up in March!
Methinks not.
Not unless they regress.
by David Hooper on Nov 23, 2009 11:08 PM EST up reply actions
Or unless this year turns into last year redux
Hopefully I’m just being pessimistic. But our shooting wasn’t great, Hopson disappeared, we turned the ball over, and we couldn’t win in the end. All sounds familiar.
by Incipient_Senescence on Nov 23, 2009 11:09 PM EST up reply actions
We WERE a 9 last year
But seriously? We’d better be better than a seven this year.
by Incipient_Senescence on Nov 23, 2009 11:08 PM EST up reply actions
We'll have to win something in the USC/Memphis/Kansas stretch
Preferably 2 or 3…and the SEC better not suck as bad this year, though it’s not off to a great start on that front.
We need at least two of those
USC and Memphis should be down this year. USC should be WAY down.
by Incipient_Senescence on Nov 23, 2009 11:11 PM EST up reply actions
Yeah
And not that that was in a LOSS to Loyola Marymount. Like I said, we’d better beat USC. We need at least one of two against Memphis and Kansas. I’d say we’ll be favored in Memphis. Winning at home vs. Kansas will be a tall order.
