McKenzi Adams' Disgruntled Father, or Whoever
Hey guys I'm new to this bloggging thing, but not to UT Sports. I'm on here because I've got to get this off my chest, it's driving me crazy! My son and I try to go to every home game we can, when he's home from school. He attends school in another state that I won't mention here. In his defense he is still Big Orange thru and thru. Anyway, there we were, Saturday night, Neyland Stadium, what could be better?....Nothing. We had good tickets this week, Sec. B Row 36. Sec B, as you know, is right next to the opposing teams fans. We've sat in the area a couple times before, and never had a problem. Besides it was Vandy, they've always been civil, even in Nashville. And for the most part they were good fans on Saturday night, with the exception of one. Now I say this guy was Adams' father just because he was around 50ish, and had on a #9 jersey. We were 2 or 3 spots over and about 6 rows back of him, so I had a good view of his reactions. He was mostly well behaved, until late in the game. We had Vandy pinned deep, and it was 3rd and long. Adams' drops back to throw, and is immediately mugged by Big Dan, Wes Brown, and Chris Walker. He gets rif of the ball as he's going down. Well apparently this old gentleman, and he was old, said something about Adams', cause his dad jumps across the aisle, and shoves his finger in the poor guys face, and proceeds to let him have it. I heard some of it, "shut the f*** up, or I'll shut you up", was one thing I heard. So the usher comes down to see what's going on, he decides it's too much for him, so he goes and gets a cop. This is where it gets weird, the cop comes, and is met by 3 or 4 Vandy fans, who are giving him their version of what happened, while Adams' just sat there staring straight ahead. I guess the cop finally decided to let him stay. My problem with this is that Neyland is our house! So there's nothing the old guy could have said that warranted him being verbally assaulted. Also, we have a set of parents at UT who must have heard everything imaginable said about their son, from his own fans, and sat there, and took it all. So I think it's disgraceful, for somebody else to come in our house, and disrespect our fans that way! Anyway, that's all I got.

well
regardless if that was his dad or not… that’s not the way to act. I honestly think Vandy fans are some of the most obnoxious in the SEC – and the worst of them are the old men. I think they have a serious inferiority complex. When I went to the UT basketball game in Nashville a couple years ago I sat in the old donor section and those old men were terrible. They were like 70 years old and heckling me and a buddy throughout the whole game. Even during time outs they would yell obsenities at us. It was crazy!

There will be
Bad apples in any bunch, of course. Really, it does depend, to some extent, what was said to incite the man, in my opinion. Well, at least somewhat; I would try very hard not to react in that manner, but I can think of some things some people could say that would REALLY piss me off.

I’d hate to speculate on details I don’t know very well (e.g. what exactly was said), but in a generic sense, I would think that there’s plenty of room for courtesy between fans, even as we’re cheering as hard as we can for our own team. I could come up with a lot of things that would be inappropriate for a UT fan to say, even if it’s in Neyland. And since different people have different thresholds of offense, having some thick skins is a good thing as well. When the smoke clears, football is supposed to be entertainment, and really nothing more. If UT loses a game, I don’t magically become less of a person (or vice versa), so I don’t need to invest too much into it.

(Oh, and as a total aside: I’d recommend changing your username so it isn’t a full email address. SBN uses some pretty sophisticated anti-spam tools that do a good job at preventing email harvesting, but that does present a risk. I’d hate to see a bunch of enlargement emails come your way. If you need help, email Joel at his addy at the bottom of the page.)
