Black Friday All-Day Football Commenting Thread

This is a little late in coming up, as two games have already started.  I blame the tryptophan.  The slate of today's games follows after the jump, with games involving ranked teams in italics.

Fireworks early in Cincy

The Zooker strikes first, then Cincy runs the ensuing kickoff back for a touchdown. Will be 7-7

by Will on Nov 27, 2009 12:21 PM EST reply actions

Awesome.

I’ll have to pull that one up.

by Hooper on Nov 27, 2009 12:23 PM EST up reply actions

In other news, Ohio is solid against a 9-2 Temple.

If Ohio gets to 9-3 on the season, it’ll make that game in Knoxville look a lot better.

by Hooper on Nov 27, 2009 12:23 PM EST reply actions

Let's go Eagles!!!

Unbutton those Zippers. I had to look up both teams’ mascots. EMU vs Akron

by ChattVol on Nov 27, 2009 12:31 PM EST reply actions

It seems like a lot of people see a potential upset in the Cincy game.

I really don’t see it. If Illinois couldn’t handle Big 10 offenses, how can they handle Cincy?

by Hooper on Nov 27, 2009 12:41 PM EST reply actions

Only thing I wondered about

Any potential distractions with Brian Kelly…but I thought the QB situation might foul them up two weeks ago, and that didn’t stop them. Doesn’t look like this is going to either.

by Will on Nov 27, 2009 12:44 PM EST up reply actions

No.

Whatever Kelly does works. Cincy is an absolute machine.

by Hooper on Nov 27, 2009 12:46 PM EST up reply actions

I am LOVING this review crew in the Cincy game. Fast and accurate.

Give ’em a raise. Whichever conference they belong to needs to do whatever it takes to keep ’em.

by Hooper on Nov 27, 2009 12:45 PM EST reply actions

They're quick on penalty calls too

no need to debate an obvious false start, just go right to it. Such a rare thing that an officiating crew gets obvious praise.

by Will on Nov 27, 2009 12:52 PM EST up reply actions

Brian Kelly loves going for it on fourth downs.

I <3 that.

He also stated that he’d love to stay at Cincy so long as Cincy is committed to building the program.

by Hooper on Nov 27, 2009 1:25 PM EST reply actions

And to think, everyone wanted Mike Leach.

Of course, this might be one of the last weeks I can actually like Brian Kelly, but still.

Simulated Gameday Experience - just like the real thing, only we have smoke machines.

by Graysnail on Nov 27, 2009 2:52 PM EST up reply actions

Illinois doesn't deserve to win

they can’t even complete surefire touchdown passes when the guy is 15 yards behind the coverage and the ball hits them in the hands

by Will on Nov 27, 2009 2:12 PM EST reply actions

Early games have turned non-competitive

I don’t think that’ll be the case in what we’re getting ready to see down in Auburn

by Will on Nov 27, 2009 2:34 PM EST reply actions

That was an impressive sequence.

From what we’ve seen before, Auburn’s going to need to make their hay in the first half.

Simulated Gameday Experience - just like the real thing, only we have smoke machines.

Tiger Woods was in a car wreck.

Serious Condition, according to early reports.

Link?

by Graysnail on Nov 27, 2009 2:55 PM EST up reply actions

I'm trying to picture this in my head...

ORLANDO, Fla. — Tiger Woods has been seriously injured in a car wreck in Florida, authorities said Friday.

The Florida Highway Patrol said Woods hit a fire hydrant and a tree as he pulled out of his driveway early Friday in his 2009 Cadillac sport utility vehicle.

Woods was taken to Health Central Hospital. His condition was not immediately known, though the news release said his injuries were serious.

The highway patrol says the crash is still under investigation, and charges are pending. However, the highway patrol said the crash was not alcohol-related.

(that’s the full AP story from ESPN.com)

by Will on Nov 27, 2009 2:56 PM EST up reply actions

I'm trying to fgure out how that could've been serious, too.

Maybe he floored it?

Charges are pending?

Simulated Gameday Experience - just like the real thing, only we have smoke machines.

by Graysnail on Nov 27, 2009 3:05 PM EST up reply actions

But

you hit a fire hydrant and do any sort of damage, wouldn’t you get charged just for that?

by Will on Nov 27, 2009 3:06 PM EST up reply actions

True.

I was thinking in a larger-scale sense.

Simulated Gameday Experience - just like the real thing, only we have smoke machines.

by Graysnail on Nov 27, 2009 3:10 PM EST up reply actions

Alabama gets a questionable dead ball unsportsmanlike

guy intercepted a pass but there was no play, he flipped the ball back over his head in frustration…15 yards, Auburn first and goal

by Will on Nov 27, 2009 3:01 PM EST reply actions

and touchdown

gonna find out if Bama’s got an offense real quick

by Will on Nov 27, 2009 3:02 PM EST up reply actions

And welcome, once again, to SEC officiating.

Can they fly in the Big East crew from the Cincinnati game before halftime?

Simulated Gameday Experience - just like the real thing, only we have smoke machines.

by Graysnail on Nov 27, 2009 3:02 PM EST up reply actions

Seriously

that crew was great. Is it unreasonable to just blow up the whole SEC officiating crew and start over?

by Will on Nov 27, 2009 3:03 PM EST up reply actions

And half the other crews while we're at it.

Or have some crew of semi-pro officials available for critical games or some such. Right now, the compensation flat out isn’t worth the headache.

Simulated Gameday Experience - just like the real thing, only we have smoke machines.

by Graysnail on Nov 27, 2009 3:06 PM EST up reply actions

I hate that rule, but it's been in place for a while.

And there’s no excuse for doing it if you already know how it’s going to be called.

by Hooper on Nov 27, 2009 3:02 PM EST up reply actions

Ask Jake Locker or Arian Foster

The most frustrating thing when that penalty was called against Foster in one of the 4 OTs in Lexington was we had to start at the 40 (which ended up not mattering) while there was no effect from the guy who ripped Eric Berry’s head off after the blocked FG.

by VolnVA on Nov 27, 2009 3:13 PM EST up reply actions

14-0 Auburn.

Think they got up for this?

Simulated Gameday Experience - just like the real thing, only we have smoke machines.

by Graysnail on Nov 27, 2009 3:02 PM EST reply actions

The bummer of all this,

is Tennessee needs Auburn to lose for the sake of bowl positioning.

Worst case: Alabama getting beat by both Auburn and Florida – and badly enough to slip beyond the reach of the Sugar Bowl.

by Hooper on Nov 27, 2009 3:10 PM EST reply actions

Go mid-majors!

Honestly, I’d rather see the BCS blown to shreds than worry about our bowl positioning for this season. I imagine I’m the only one who says that.

Simulated Gameday Experience - just like the real thing, only we have smoke machines.

by Graysnail on Nov 27, 2009 3:13 PM EST up reply actions

You're not the only one!

I caught a few minutes of TCU a couple weeks ago and I think they could legitimately win against Florida/Bama/Texas if given the chance.

by VolnVA on Nov 27, 2009 3:14 PM EST up reply actions

I was watching that game yesterday.

I mentioned to one of my Texas friends that TCU would’ve been up 28-7 on TAMU at the half. He wasn’t amused.

Simulated Gameday Experience - just like the real thing, only we have smoke machines.

by Graysnail on Nov 27, 2009 3:16 PM EST up reply actions

To be honest, though, I think it’d take a lot for Alabama to fall below the Sugar Bowl.

by Hooper on Nov 27, 2009 3:15 PM EST up reply actions

Same here.

Simulated Gameday Experience - just like the real thing, only we have smoke machines.

by Graysnail on Nov 27, 2009 3:16 PM EST up reply actions

surely Alabama still gets an at-large though

even if you take both TCU and Boise – which I’m still not sure is happening – out of Iowa, Penn State, Oklahoma State and Alabama all at 10-2, would they really take two of those teams over Bama?

And win or lose, Auburn beat us and deserves a better bowl if we both finish 7-5 (or if Auburn is 8-4, obviously). I’d have no real gripe if they went to Tampa and we went to Atlanta. The matchups in the Chick-Fil-A Bowl are much, much more attractive anyway.

by Will on Nov 27, 2009 3:16 PM EST up reply actions

Absolutely I do :)

but…your potential opponents in ATL are #14 VT, #17 Miami, or the loser of #7 GT and #19 Clemson. If the Big Ten gets two in the BCS, your Outback Bowl opponents are all unranked

by Will on Nov 27, 2009 3:18 PM EST up reply actions

What's so wrong with that?

On the other hand, Tyrod Taylor would be a nightmare for our LB corps in the shape they’re in now.

Simulated Gameday Experience - just like the real thing, only we have smoke machines.

by Graysnail on Nov 27, 2009 3:19 PM EST up reply actions

I think Tyrod's talent is more perception than reality

The real problem is finding a way to get Ryan Williams on the ground

by Will on Nov 27, 2009 3:21 PM EST up reply actions

It's more the running QB threat than the dual-threat I'm concerned about.

The passing game would be non-existent.

by Graysnail on Nov 27, 2009 3:25 PM EST up reply actions

Wyoming is up 7-6 at the half.

If they win, the MWC will fill their bowl slate, which will help their argument for BCS inclusion.

by Hooper on Nov 27, 2009 3:23 PM EST reply actions

Wyoming is bowl-eligible.

We now return you to your Iron Bowl…

by Hooper on Nov 27, 2009 4:56 PM EST reply actions

congrats

I’m for anything that makes us look better, even a year later

by Will on Nov 27, 2009 4:59 PM EST up reply actions

Alabama seems to be doing what they do best.

Kick FGs from inside the red zone.

by Graysnail on Nov 27, 2009 5:11 PM EST reply actions

I'm still buying the "It's their year" philosophy

this still feels like a game they’re going to find a way to win

by Will on Nov 27, 2009 5:12 PM EST up reply actions

Oh, I don't think they'll lose this.

I just couldn’t stop myself from that crack. 23-21 is a win, right?

Simulated Gameday Experience - just like the real thing, only we have smoke machines.

by Graysnail on Nov 27, 2009 5:13 PM EST up reply actions

RBR traffic is making sorta-jokes about ref conspiracies

after that pass deflection earlier and that interference on third down just now.

Well, that and a whole lot of bad words.

by Hooper on Nov 27, 2009 5:30 PM EST reply actions

Oops.

Nice playcall. I love that call when everyone’s expecting a run.

Simulated Gameday Experience - just like the real thing, only we have smoke machines.

by Graysnail on Nov 27, 2009 5:51 PM EST up reply actions

Possibly.

With another 1-2 plays, maybe. But they had a shot at the end. Quite frankly, Todd threw that pass too early.

True.

His receivers were still running into position.

by Hooper on Nov 27, 2009 6:01 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, that was my thought.

At least give your guys a jump-ball shot at that. They never stood a chance.

I stick by my post UT-Bama assessment

That this is Bama’s year. Everyone needs some unlikely plays (FG blocks against UT), a come-from-behind victory when you were really outplayed most of the game (today), etc. I also am mostly incredibly tired of hearing about Tebow, so I feel that Bama is the lesser of 2 evils.

by VolnVA on Nov 27, 2009 6:15 PM EST up reply actions

"so I feel that Bama is the lesser of 2 evils."

I’ll take that. :P

What you're seeing is team spirit. It's like the Holy Spirit, but more powerful.
