I wish Year2 good luck.

There was plenty of culpa to go around, but there’s just no practical way for a Florida fan to explain that without other people reading it as a defense of Spikes (which it obviously wasn’t).

Ah, fandom.

No joke

Do I need to rehash my prior post where I said the Spikes suspension was warranted and probably not enough? I hate repeating myself. Do I need to embed the Spikes video along with the Williams video? It’s not really that necessary since I already linked to it, but I’ll be called biased if I don’t because then I’m only embedding the malfeasance of one team and not the other. I better do that. Should I run down all the shoving matches and rough play of the game? It was obvious to those who watched the whole game, but some people may not have seen it or were flipping channels and missed some of it. Eh, I guess not since others have run that down, but maybe someone missed that too. Is there any way to encourage people to just move on? This story is already way overcooked for its relative importance and there are 10 other teams in the conference to get to. I’ll take a stab at it, but my hopes aren’t high.

All that thought and more inevitably leads to “homer!” Sometimes blogging royally sucks.

FWIW, I'd just let it go.

I still periodically reiterate that I never approved of the ‘Meyer-cheater’ comments, etc. It’s just assumed that I think that way. And that’s fine; nobody should really expect sports fans to be a rational bunch. ;-)

Honestly,

I believe that Meyer should give a 1-game suspension because

  1. Spikes got caught, so I think that there should be something more than a little slap on the wrist (which a suspension of one half is) if for nothing else to tell the big public we-don’t-know-that-football-is-played-dirty-and-war-is-fun crowd that it’s not allowed (even though we all know it’s okay).
  2. It’s Vanderbilt for Pete’s sake! Brandon Spikes hasn’t gotten a lot of playing time in some bigger games this year, and Florida is still undefeated.
  3. However, on that note, Brandon Spikes is a Senior; he’s given 4 hard-fought years to the University of Florida and seems to be a pretty good guy overall. I know the area where he grew up and my girlfriend, who was in the same graduating class as him, does speak good things of what she knows of him. I suppose I would like to see a full game suspension more than a half-game, but I do believe Mr. Spikes will learn something out of this, so I’m okay with it.

I don't see why you are getting flustered

This is from your above comment.

For what reason would you mention the roughness of the game if it weren’t to excuse Spikes actions? That is clearly what you are doing. And you are very very appropriately getting blasted for it. If you want the discussion to go away, then simply refrain from trying to justify Spikes actions — as your are plainly doing in the above-quoted portion and previously did at TSK — as some kind of unavoidable direct consequence of a rough, dirty game. No. That is not how it works. Late hits are commonplace. Chippy games are commonplace. A premediated attempt at blinding another man by gouging his eyes out is in a completely different galaxy.

In sum, the reason you are hearing a broken record of criticism, is because you are inviting it - in fact begging for it - with statements like the above-quoted.

Nowhere did I try to use that to justify Spikes’ actions. If you think I was trying to do that, it’s you reading something into my words that isn’t there. I’ve been clear on this since the news broke:

Regardless, you can’t retaliate and a suspension was warranted. Eye gouging has no place in football, and he deserves to see the bench.

Tell me where the ambiguity is. The point of the post you’re referring to was to point out that Georgia’s hands weren’t clean in the game either. I made no attempt to equate one thing to another; I simply chose not to run down all the transgressions of both teams because there isn’t video evidence of it all and I’m not going down the path of passing on allegations without proof.

If you see the orange F and automatically assume I’m going into full apologist mode by default, then the problem’s not on my side.

Believe me, there is no knee jerk upon seeing the F

If you are not trying to justify Spikes’ actions, then why is there an embedded a video of the UGA guy hitting Tebow late in your post? Why do your responses characterize the game as “chippy”?

I’m being completely serious. If they aren’t there to justify Spikes’ actions — even faintheartedly — then what purpose do they serve? What other point do you wish to convey?

Because to convey an accurate description of the game, it was necessary.

I can't see any reasoning to defend Spikes' action.

He purposefully stuck his hand into a players facemask who was laying on the ground and tried to blind him.

This ranks right up there with the Haynesworth head stomp. He should have been kicked out of the game, and Spikes should be too. This is not a “part of the game,” and it’s despicable that anyone could actually say that.

I can't believe I clicked on that story

And saw this quote:

I don’t think Spikes is trying to injure Ealey

Blatant, ignorant homerism at it’s finest. Horrible.

This is not a "part of the game,"

Really, it is part of the game. Not the nice, happy happy side; it’s the darker side that I think all of us would like to either ignore or get rid of. I do think that Spikes was getting back at someone else — not an excuse, I don’t think the suspension was heavy enough, personally — as stuff like this really happens all the time.
