Lil' Wayne's Latest Shout-Out to Lane Kiffin and the Vols
Joel fanshotted (fanshat?) this just about an hour ago.
Bruce Feldman of ESPN tweeted:
More "street cred" for #Vols Lil Lane from Lil Wayne (go to 15:00 mark)
He also posted a link to a Lil' Wayne UStream broadcast where he talks about the Vols for a minute or two. The video is here, but I thought I would just transcribe it for everyone's ease of reading.
So, here is Lil Wayne on Lane Kiffin and the Tennessee Vols:
"....shout out all my people at ESPN, shout out Lane Kiffin and the whole Tennessee Volunteers team. I heard they [the University I believe] don't indulge in the things that I said because I said 'smoke weed talk [fulmerized] like Lane Kiffin' but Lane what you don't know is you gonna be sittin' in some recruit's living room and his mother is gonna call him from the back room and he's gonna come up front listenin' to an iPod. On his iPod he's gonna be listening to 'smoke weed talk [fulmerized] like Lane Kiffin' and you'll be able to say 'hi son, I'm Lane Kiffin I'm who he's talkin' about' and you just may get a recruit because of that. Don't thank me, just apologize for not thanking me.
Naw, but for real though, I rock with you Lil' Lane. I heard that's your new name they call you Lil' Lane. And all them boys over there at Tennessee, I rock with y'all!! And y'all stumped ummm I watched y'all stump South Carolina tonight y'all did y'all's thing. I am a big fan of the Ole' Ball Coach, but y'all did y'all's thing tonight and I rocks with y'all. I LOVE the black and orange jerseys you killed 'em, thank you...."
That's it, but the recruiting value of that is tremendous, and any rival fan who thinks otherwise is delusional. I'm sure we'll take some more "street-cred" comments, but they can keep it up as long as Lil' Wayne does!

Thanks for transcribing that.
I had figured that it was reasonably PGish when Feldman links to it without any warnings, but that should definitely help those at work.
What a difference a season makes, though.
Not a problem
Plus, I like it in print so it can be read over and over. ;-)
I told you we would beat Georgia!! Now, as for those 9 wins in '09......

I have it from a wildly unpredictable source
(i.e. he is either right on or way off) that Lil Wayne will grace our sidelines this season, and perhaps even do a halftime performance. If it’s gonna happen it’s gonna be either tonight or the Vandy game. Would be allsome.
I am just in disbelief...
…at the awesomeness of that clip, and just the general awesomeness of the undisputed hottest rapper alive co-signing the head coach of my team.
I have a huge smile on my face.

He released a new album
That contains a rap with the line “I smoke weed, talk [fulmerized] like Lane Kiffin”
The number one, grammy winning rapper mentions your name in a song like that and you get serious “street” credibility with 17 year old prospects. The above is just unsolicited followup from Lil’ Wayne that is completely awesome.
FWIW, he also mentions Tebow in a rap on the album, but I don’t think it means the same thing from a recruiting standpoint.

o gotcha
yea you are right, that is awesome for you guys.
Rick Ross inspired Jarvis Moss to not quit the NFL because in his rap he dissed Moss saying he should be the only person in FL with the last name to rime with boss. Somthing like that. Any way the point is, if he can get through to a NFL player, I am sure Lil Wayne can get through to high schoolers.
Huh?

Do you remember Jarvis Moss?
DE for the Gators drafted in the 1st round. He wasnt panning out in the NFL and he was considering quiting football becuase of the heat he was getting. He heard a song from (rapper) Rick Ross saying something like, he should be the only person in Florida with a last name to rhyme with BOSS, refering to Moss being a bust. Jarvis says that motivated him to keep playing, and has now moved to OLB and is still on the team I guess.
So if a NFL player can be influenced by a Rapper, I am sure high schoolers can be.
Again, huh?
I don’t quite see the correlation here, but if it helps you understand, by all means….
I’m sure there have been many people inspired by rap songs to do different things.
It’s not everyday a 4-4 coach gets discussed at length, with admiration, by the top artist in the country.

I believe Lil Lane did thank Lil Wayne:
looking forward to another great practice today and a huge game saturday…also a huge shout-out to Lil Wayne for boosting our street cred!
That is a thank you in my book.
Official MCM Hater!
Retire #9!
Yeah
I’m sure he’ll (Lane) will thank him again somehow. He should send Lil’ Wayne a black and orange jersey. Maybe a number 14? Let’s see that thing in a video!!!

I'm torn on this one
I recognize the value to the recruits but hate the whole street rap mentality that ruins (or reflects the ruined) kids in so many areas.
Could take this one or leave it…
Is "street cred"
something we really want a lot of, given how “street cred” is normally won?
Tennessee Fans: We win at teh Internet!
If Kiffin starts getting 'out of prison' tattoos, then I'll be worried. ;-)
But in all seriousness, as long as Kiffin isn’t doing anything unethical, outside of contract, illegal, etc., I’m not going to hold the opinions of outside people against him.
Yeah
“Street-cred” may be the wrong word here since we all know that most rappers are all talk. Celebrity may be more like it. It’s a good thing if Lane Kiffin can be recognized as “that guy from the rap song” as well as the Tennessee coach by recruits out in Cali or wherever that don’t see as much coverage of Tennessee. Maybe we can get some TV show to include him as a guest star or something. ;-)

I will give this though. Bobo is certainly right that there is potential for this to go south. We don’t need Kiffin to come off as too street. A lot of recruits’ parents won’t be so keen on that.
Exactly my point.
I mean, there are reasons Marlon Brown was committed to UT, and there are reasons why he isn’t playing in Knoxville right now. As much as we might hope that this will do good things (and, I think, it will) there are the negative ramifications too. The first fight that ever breaks out at UT will have people saying that Lane Kiffin only recruits thugs and blahblah etcetc.
Tennessee Fans: We win at teh Internet!
True
But let’s not read too much into this. I’m sure the Lil’ Wayne reference is pretty far down the list when it comes to recruiting pitches.
I think it’s more of just a “oh cool, it’s that guy from my iPod” type deal.

how prophetic this post turned out to be...
