Couple of things right off the bat:
- USC transfer PG Mike Gerrity cleared waivers with the NCAA today, so he’ll play in his first game with the Trojans
- The #3 Lady Vols are also on the west coast today, currentlly trailing #2 Stanford 30-18 at halftime (also on FSN/SportSouth). We’ll be keeping an eye on the second half of that one here as well
So, trip delayed
Trivia questions:
1. How long did it take me to get home from work yesterday? (It’s a 12-mile drive.)
2. How many cars were either ditched or abandoned along that same route this morning?

Do we get points for being within a certain number?
I’ll go with 2 hours and 30 – if that seems high, it’s because I’ve got 21 inches (and electricity, unexpected bonus!) here
by Will Shelton on Dec 19, 2009 4:08 PM EST up reply actions
Points?
Points?! What, do you think points grow on trees?!
We got only six or something (haven’t looked it — just what it looks like), but they didn’t pre-treat the roads or anything. It’s like it caught them off guard or something.
I can imagine 21 inches (remember, we spend every Christmas in MN), but not 21 inches in a place where they don’t devote half their annual budget on sand, salt, and beet juice.

Thankfully, I live on the main road that cuts through the mountains here
it’s the first one they plow, and then they were kind enough to plow my driveway, so I can get out. But there’s no point in going anywhere – we’ve cancelled all of our Christmas services here and I’m looking forward to making up for lost time with my xbox in the next 48 hours

I just walked about half an hour in it; we’ve got drifts well up past my knee, close to my waist. I think we have some more time on it, too.

Total insanity at the end of Butler/Xavier
Xavier was up one with 38 seconds left. Butler got a questionable jump ball on the inbounds to get the ball back. On their possession, the ball was deflected into the backcourt but Butler got it back – the timekeeper stopped the clock at 14.7 during the play because they thought a foul was called, but it wasn’t, so they restarted it after a couple seconds. Butler missed a three, gets the rebound after a crazy scramble and hits a guy underneath for a wide open layup with 1.2 seconds left.
During the timeout, the refs go back and catch the clock stoppage, and after deliberating for five minutes, they take the remaining 1.2 seconds off the clock and say the game is over because the clock would’ve run out had it not been stopped on Butler’s layup. Butler wins, Xavier’s coach almost assaulted a referee trying to get off the floor as quickly as possible, and almost had an altercation between the teams in the postgame handshake. Crazy
Wait, what?

had the clock not been stopped during the middle of the play
the refs said time would’ve expired while the ball was in the air on Butler’s game-winning layup…I think

Oh, man.
That won’t cause any problems, will it. (This would suck even more in March if Xavier is on the bubble.)

not just quick threes
they’re giving us looks from deep and we’re taking them. I think the overall pace has our guys frustrated and thinking “I’ve gotta make a play” – just horrible individual offensive efforts from almost everyone, and the guys we need to shoot aren’t: Tatum 0-1, Tyler 0-1, BWill hasn’t taken a shot

We need this game
Guys we really need to comeback and win this game. If we lose to a 4-4 USC team does anyone think we can beat Memphis on the road or even compete with Kansas. If we can’t beat Memphis, Kansas, or USC that would leave us with zero marquee nonconference wins. We need to win this game. I mean 24-7 on the boards that’s a joke. Chism and Smith have to step up for us to comeback

our offense sucks
we have to be able to score even when we’re not shooting well. what is pearl’s back up plan? any screens? backdoor cuts? what??? its like we don’t even have any post players
five bodies in the paint all game
we’ve got nobody who can knock down a three to make them do otherwise
If they were out late, on top of the time zone difference,
they undoubtedly didn’t sleep well. That means that (a) this doesn’t have to be the tone for other big games in the season, and (b) it’s entirely their own fault.
Grabbing Twitter quotes for the postgame will probably tell the story.
This is what happened in our first true road game last year too

We are getting outworked, out hustled, and just look like we don’t want to be here. This looks eerily similar to road games last year against teams we were better than (Temple, Ole Miss, Auburn,). I thought this team truly was better than last years team, but after today I’m convinced otherwise. You do know...
that coming into this game, we were 7th in Division I in 3pt FG percentage at 43.4%? I know that didn’t apply today, but still, it hopefully was just a bad shooting day, at least if we’re talking outside shooting.
I agree that the team looked bad today. The lack of rebounding was especially frustrating. Hopefully this can serve as a lesson and not a permanent setback.
Try not to get too down over one game, folks.

Let me amend, after venting my frustration
If any team guards us outside 18 feet when we are as cold as we were in the USC game, flat emotionally, a step slow, with the aggression of 8 year old girls on the backboards, then yes the are stupid to guard us beyond 18 feet.
In the Purdue game, I thought we were unlucky to lose to the #4 team in the country. We can be that good. Today, I thought we didn’t deserve to be ranked. We can be that bad. This game was an Auburn flashback to last year.
Guess I’m not done venting – when our team has this much talent and fails to give the same effort of the Lofton-Bradshaw-Smith era, it’s disappointing.
I most definitely agree...
about the effort. It is disappointing and frustrating, and venting is understandable!
