Lane Kiffin recruiting press conference open thread

Lane Kiffin's having a 5:30 p.m. press conference to discuss the day's events. Click on the link early because you'll need to install Silverlight if you don't already have it. It's fine. You worry too much.

If you're a Firefoxer, get Silverlight installed, and then download the Split Browser or Split Pannel [sic] plug in so you can have the video open on one half of your screen and can comment in the thread below in the other. (I like Split Browser better, by the way.)

See? Men can multitask. As long as you don't ask them to do it all at once.

Gonna be Jackson

I can feel it. The guy wants to play for Monte. Our secondary is going to be INSANE.

by rblakeh on Feb 4, 2009 5:28 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Remind me about Jackson.

I can’t remember off the top of my head and I don’t want to disturb the split screen.

by Hooper on Feb 4, 2009 5:31 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Interesting, this split scree.

I’ll have to play with it a bit, but I think I like it.

by Hooper on Feb 4, 2009 5:25 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Got it. Sorta.

I had to split with the presser on bottom and RTT on top to get the windows to play nice. Wanted side-by-side but oh well.

by Hooper on Feb 4, 2009 5:28 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

ditto here

Is the press conference feed live yet? Mine’s black.

Me, neither

Perhaps it’s not happening yet?

Go Vols!

by Joel on Feb 4, 2009 5:35 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Wha?

UT people interested in a football recruiting presser? For real?

by Hooper on Feb 4, 2009 5:36 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

problems

i tried to watch the video , but it says the media you have selected is currently unavailable?

He is just commenting on why we have such low numbers...

Basically what we’ve all said… why waste schollies on guys who are just gonna get passed up in a year or two?

by rblakeh on Feb 4, 2009 5:36 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

The only viable answer is:

“Because we have so few players that we need them to field a team.”

Fortunately, that’s not the case.

by Hooper on Feb 4, 2009 5:37 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

"We're just getting started."

“This is just a taste.:”

by rblakeh on Feb 4, 2009 5:37 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

He doesn't want to sign someone

just to get a body or improve a ranking. I like that.

Go Vols!

by Joel on Feb 4, 2009 5:39 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Temptation to take guys for the sake of taking guys?

Basically, “yes but that’s not a bright idea.”

by Hooper on Feb 4, 2009 5:40 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

He's right about the QBs

In Meat Market, a lot was about the domino effect that happens after the top QBs commit. If you want one of the best, you have to be early.

Go Vols!

by Joel on Feb 4, 2009 5:40 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Something we missed...

Kiffin said that Marlon wanted to come to UT but his grandma didn’t want him to. Ouch.

I have read that CMR took a copy of Meat Market to Ms. Brown and she did not like what she saw…

by rblakeh on Feb 4, 2009 5:40 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I could see that

That’s a question I have for Bruce.

Go Vols!

by Joel on Feb 4, 2009 5:41 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Bruce?

Also something about Lance Thompson’s divorce, too.

by rblakeh on Feb 4, 2009 5:42 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

If true, that's 0-fer-2.

“The Blind Side” was very uncomplimentary of Fulmer. Now they have a book to wave around and spin about Orgeron.

by Hooper on Feb 4, 2009 5:42 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Funny thing is

Is that he was a noble guy. Just profane.

Go Vols!

by Joel on Feb 4, 2009 5:43 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Open to JUCO players

but they “have to be great players.”

Go Vols!

by Joel on Feb 4, 2009 5:42 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

"Eddie Orgeron"

Never heard him called Eddie before.

by Hooper on Feb 4, 2009 5:44 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

We did send a message

We got a mention on Around the Horn, right up there with Michigan and LSU.

by rblakeh on Feb 4, 2009 5:45 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Read between the lines, y'all

This is not a one year plan!

Go Vols!

by Joel on Feb 4, 2009 5:46 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Good thing to remember:

Year prior to arrival in USC: 5-7
Year prior to arrival in UT: 5-7

1st year at USC: 6-6
1st year at UT: ???

Let’s not fantasize too much too soon.

by Hooper on Feb 4, 2009 5:46 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

We were very close to being 7-5 though

Maybe even 8-4. Not sure what USC’s season was like, though.

by rblakeh on Feb 4, 2009 5:47 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Also true.

I don’t expect 6-6 next year, but I don’t expect 11-1 either.

by Hooper on Feb 4, 2009 5:47 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Me either.

I’m thinking more like 14-0.

:)

by rblakeh on Feb 4, 2009 5:48 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

They were just over 50%

the year before Orgeron got there, which was a year before Carroll, I think.

Go Vols!

The fans matter!

Remind us of that in the fall.

Woo!, not Boo!

by Hooper on Feb 4, 2009 5:48 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Fan support was huge in this

Firmly believe it.

SO STOP BOOING AT GAMES!

by rblakeh on Feb 4, 2009 5:49 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Unless you are booing UF, of course

Ha, just mentioned The Rock. I saw a picture of that over at Losers With Socks. Very funny.

by rblakeh on Feb 4, 2009 5:49 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Yes

We were in the consideration for lots of great players. Thank you for pointing that out.

by rblakeh on Feb 4, 2009 5:51 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

by rblakeh on Feb 4, 2009 5:52 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Ok i'm in full panic mode

Is anyone else still receiving the broadcast? If so, what are you listening on?

by rblakeh on Feb 4, 2009 5:52 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

How many commercials are there going to be?

Dustin

by volfan5216 on Feb 4, 2009 5:55 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Yeah we're missing the entire thing

I wouldn’t be surprised if everyone unsigned simply because our UT Sports website is so terrible.

by rblakeh on Feb 4, 2009 5:56 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I don't need to drink to fit in?!

Whaaat? Why didn’t someone tell me sooner?!

by rblakeh on Feb 4, 2009 5:57 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Trust me.

If you don’t drink, you don’t fit in. I haven’t fit in my entire life.

Quote from Marsalis Teague courtesy of GVX

“With all due respect to the last staff, if they were still there, I probably wouldn’t be going to the University of Tennessee,” he said. “The new staff came in with so much energy, it opened my eyes to a different part of Tennessee.”

Give the new guys some credit.

by ChattVol on Feb 4, 2009 6:02 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

yes

With all due respect to Coach Fulmer, his model of coaching was simply outdated. I don’t mean the playcalling or anything like that. The idea that being a Junior or a Senior gives you any sort of priority for PT is just no longer practiced. Coach Meyer said today that they don’t even redshirt anyone anymore.

Again, I don’t mean to kick Coach while he is down. I have the utmost respect for him and what he has done.

by rblakeh on Feb 4, 2009 6:04 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Anybody clocking this?

It has to be a record. At least eight minutes straight of commercials and junk?

Go Vols!

by Joel on Feb 4, 2009 6:03 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I think this seriously backfired.

We now know how much commercial time we normally endure when the radio is on.

by Hooper on Feb 4, 2009 6:04 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I think you're all just spoiled..

I haven’t got to hear a single thing, so….

Still paying the bills

Different package. Still a commercial.

Go Vols!

by Joel on Feb 4, 2009 6:05 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Well there's your answer

No coach O.

Trivia question.

I’ll see you all at the game thread at 8:00. Until then, cello lessons for the youngin.

Go Vols!

by Joel on Feb 4, 2009 6:06 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Hey man..

How about just buying me a cello? I’ll take care of the rest

by samhitch on Feb 4, 2009 6:07 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Well that's it for me guys

I think I’m gonna go check out the weather and then go buy some soup or something. Definitely won’t be drinking any alcohol though, despite the peer pressure. I’ll be sure to listen to THE SPORTS ANIMAL while I do all of that stuff, though.

by rblakeh on Feb 4, 2009 6:06 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

LOL

Later, man.

by Hooper on Feb 4, 2009 6:07 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

heh

See ya.

Go Vols!

by Joel on Feb 4, 2009 6:07 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

First time I heard that was earlier today

That’s a good job of keeping a secret in a situation where everybody seems to know everything about kids.

by Will on Feb 4, 2009 6:18 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Still, it's a great story.

1st in his family to college.

by Hooper on Feb 4, 2009 6:24 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Right

His attitude strikes me as someone who is using football as a tool to go to college, as opposed to some of these other guys who use college to play football.

by rblakeh on Feb 4, 2009 6:25 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I am really, really excited about him

He seems to really, really, really want to play for the Vols. I think he has that “chip on his shoulder” thing going. He seems very humble and respectful. I look forward to watching him play. I think he is going to be All Vol.

by rblakeh on Feb 4, 2009 6:24 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Any thoughts on Hyams asking CLK about Thigpen?

Cheap shot, IMO.

Also I’m reading that PF said if he were still the HC, we would have gotten Brown.

Another cheap shot, I think.

by rblakeh on Feb 4, 2009 6:31 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

We would also have gotten Boyd.

It’s a dangerous thing to go down that road.

by Hooper on Feb 4, 2009 6:33 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

But

Not Myles, Teague, Richardson, Oliver……..

And on and on. I agree. Bad road to go down.

by rblakeh on Feb 4, 2009 6:35 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Love to see the exact wording on Fulmer

If it’s the CPF I know and love, it’s something like “…and you know, we felt like we had good shot at Marlon, felt like we were in a good place with him and his family…and felt like we would’ve closed the deal.” That I’m alright with. “I would’ve gotten Marlon Brown” is different and out of character for Phillip

by Will on Feb 4, 2009 6:33 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Wow

9 minutes in, and still noone there.

by rblakeh on Feb 4, 2009 6:38 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Well, I'll listen to it later.

Dinner’s up. Thanks, Will, for the heads up.
