Chism maybe learning???

Chism played 25 mins and had 18 points in the win Sunday over the Gaytors. The stat line that made me the most happy however was this. 1-1 from Outside the arch. This shot was a wide open shot near the top of the arch.

Last game verses MSU 2-6 from 3 range with only 12 points in 28 mins.

Verses UK 1-7 from 3 range with 10 points in 30 mins.

I hope Chism pays attention to this and see that when you let the others players on the team do what they are good at (playing outside) and you do what you are good at (playing inside) it produces much greater results.

Think about this. A couple of missed 3 pointers from Chism in this game instead of inside baskets could have cost Tennessee the game today. Think about that Chism... how many other close games have we lost because of his poor shot selection from outside?

My favorite thing about the bottom picture

Is that Tyler Smith isn’t lookin’ too happy with the fact Chism just shot a three.

This whole thing is really getting old.

Chism taking threes is not the reason we’ve struggled this year. Inconsistent guard play, perimeter defense, lapses in defensive rebounding and overall inexperience with one another I would argue are the primary reasons we’ve struggled at times.

Yes Chism is a great post player but he also has a unique skill set in that he can play out on the perimeter, he’s athletic enough to switch and match up with a point guard and the threat of him shooting from the outside can pull the other teams big away from the basket and open up room underneath.

The Kentucky stat line was ugly, yes but we played horrible as a team that game and it wasn’t Chism’s shot selection that lost the game for us.

I’m not saying a guy who shoots .289 from deep should be taking 7 3’s a game I’m just saying I think this is something that really gets blown out of proportion.

It's all up to Pearl to rein him in if he wants.

Pearl’s said he wants Chism taking the 3’s to open things up (which it actually does, very nicely; I’ve been watching for it). There’s certainly a fine line between 3’s to open up the middle and overdoing it, but I’ll defer to Pearl’s far greater experience on this. Perhaps Pearl is too aggressive on the call, but even that’s no reason for me to be too critical.

But those pictures are really sweet. Really sweet.
