Rivals' #1 Player Bryce Brown Signs with Tennessee
Bryce Brown

- Rivals:5* http://tennessee.rivals.com/viewprospect.asp?pr_key=54102&sport=1
- YouTubery: SI
- Top 3 "Other" Offers: Miami, Oregon, USC
At this point, you probably know the rest of the story - The Butler and Potential Players, the long and dragged out process, and the way all of this makes some Vol fans nervous. And again, he hasn't done anything great in a Vol uniform...yet.
But what we can say definitively is that for Lane Kiffin and the SuperStaff, to land the number one player in the nation in your first recruiting class that you had two months to work with...that, my friends, is more than impressive.

Congrats….but don’t count your chicks before they hatch. This kid has baggage. If he shuns Butler then you are ok but if that guy sticks around, id appoint someone to watch that kid where ever he goes….
When you are an Alabama fan you are expected to hate Auburn, I hate Tennessee because I want to.

When you are an Alabama fan you are expected to hate Auburn, I hate Tennessee because I want to.
It's backhanded because it is patronizing
Honestly, we do not need your concern. You coming around here and acting like our wise older brother who is looking out for us is a tired act.
not so much a jerk, more of a:
concern troll
A person who posts on a blog thread, in the guise of “concern,” to disrupt dialogue or undermine morale by pointing out that posters and/or the site may be getting themselves in trouble, usually with an authority or power. They point out problems that don’t really exist. The intent is to derail, stifle, control, the dialogue. It is viewed as insincere and condescending.

So there is
no way for a rival fan to be nice….wow….
When you are an Alabama fan you are expected to hate Auburn, I hate Tennessee because I want to.
again...
i said congrats (which is more than i got from any UT fan during our amazing recruiting class) then i said just be ware….i know you guys are trying to look on the positive side. Which is something that every fan base would do but you have to see that there is some danger in sigining this class.
To be true i don’t know why i bother. I use to come here and have logical conversation.
When you are an Alabama fan you are expected to hate Auburn, I hate Tennessee because I want to.
I wouldn't worry too much about it.
For the most part, UT fans have been placed on the defensive regarding the football program over the last few months. Part of it is warranted criticism (the Florida cheater thing, which I think most of us would acknowledge that he shouldn’t have said at all), and part is unwarranted (some things like the Alshon gas-pumping comments turned out to be bogus and got a lot more play than they normally would have because the media is highly sensitive to Kiffin controversy at the moment). But either way, there is a tinge of backs-to-the wall with UT fans regarding a coaching staff that has in its “pro” column a very good recruiting class for a 2-3 month turnaround and has in its “con” column a couple of unfortunate statements said on the fly.
As things get more cemented over time and the degree to which sane difference of opinion about the coaching staff narrows, then it’ll be easier to have rival conversations. For example, Alabama fans were completely on their own island when Saban was hired because you had past performance at other institutions while the more recent storyline was his reversal on a rather strong statement about not going to Alabama. That put the Tide faithful on the defensive for a while, but now there is a lot more consensus on his performance at Alabama and we’re bickering on finer points rather than his tenure as a whole.
Like any team with a new staff, everything is speculation from all angles and there is a lot of potential for argument. Time will calm that down, as always. (And I’m sure you’re finding much the same luck over at TET right now.)
As to your parenthetical statement, I have to confess that I spend far less time commenting on other blogs than I used to. Once I signed on board here with Joel, my time got consumed with this site and I had to make some sacrifices for things like school and family. So, congrats on your recruiting class as well!

Honestly, I don't feel like my back is against the wall
Bammer just annoys me. Simple as that. I’m not implying that he cares what I think (I know he doesn’t), but I get tired of him acting like he has UT’s best interests at heart. If you want to congratulate a rival, something more like, “Great job in picking up Bryce Brown, he is a great player… too bad it won’t make a difference since your OL sucks.” is a much better way of going about it. Acting like he is concerned about us and trying to give us a warning (i.e. treating us like children) is condescending and annoying. Again, I’m not implying that he gives a flying rat’s behind about what I think, but I just want to make it clear that I do not feel defensive at all.
Does getting defensive regarding an earlier defensive post count? I think so. In any case, you wear your troubles on your shoulders and it is obvious. Stop whining. And concerning my rivalry duties, Brown might break 200 yds. next season behind that OL with some luck.
Stop whining?
Seriously, the more a fan base cares about a team, the more they complain. Whether it’s “whining” is almost always judged by whether the judger is of the same fan base or an opposing fan base.
Take the Brian Cook / Alabama oversigning deal. Those who were of the same mind as Cook saw Alabama fans whining about their sanctified program being criticized. Those who were of the same mind as Alabama fans saw Cook and the like whining about Alabama’s recruiting techniques. It’s still not a resolved issue; both sides feel they’re right and that the other side is just too stubborn to see things clearly.
It’s the norm in sports. It drives me absolutely crazy, but it is what it is.

If you
think im concerned about UT then you are misreading me. UT is our biggest rival and not having Brown on your team is better for us. I do care about the SEC and i dont want another black mark on our conference.
I THINK (like you care what i think) that Brown is trouble. Do i know him personally? Nope but i have eyes and i can read. Like i said before, its great you guys are looking on the bright side. If he had gone to Miami, you guys would be saying most of what we are and Miami fans would be the ones defending him. You know it’s true.
When you are an Alabama fan you are expected to hate Auburn, I hate Tennessee because I want to.
My case has been stated long before today.
I’ve written quite a bit on Brown and Butler, and it all came back as inconclusive. I’ve not been able to decide what to think of the situation, and I still don’t. However, I am generally an optimistic person and I tend to give benefit of the doubt. So yes, I do look on the bright side, but I would do the same if he were at Miami, LSU or Oregon.
(And no Oxford comma.)

yeah we would…and you guys would be the ones saying he’s a cancer..
When you are an Alabama fan you are expected to hate Auburn, I hate Tennessee because I want to.
So we've basically established
that this argument will never be resolved due to fan affiliation.
But seriously, we all do agree that if Butler stays involved with Brown while at UT, then there will almost undoubtedly be problems. The thing is, I haven’t been able to find any evidence of Butler getting involved with any of his prior clients, and he’s been at this for several years.
So if we allow the trend to be assumed, then we’re left wondering about Brown on his own. So far, he’s been relatively quiet; kids like Oku were far more media-hungry. Other than the decommitment from Miami, there’s not a whole lot to point to that can be used to build an expectation of trouble.
Add to that his public assertion of his faith, and he’s ascribing a rather strict code of ethics to himself. If he’s serious about his faith, he’ll want to demonstrate it. That means he’ll want to not be in trouble for egotistical grandstanding.
There are a lot of reasons to think that Brown is alright. The stuff that works against him (Butler, the decommit, the late signing) have very little precedent for trouble. We’re prone to worry because it feels sketchy. But we can’t reliably assert that is will be sketchy once he’s on campus.
So long as the recruiting process itself was clean, there’s not a whole lot of reason for people to worry about Brown at this point. The normal things (grades, work ethic, etc.) are more likely to be a concern right now.

Not trolling.
The eyes of the NCAA and everybody else are on UT. Caution is a good thing. Chillax already.

Maybe the best news
Is that this kid doesn’t have to come in and contribute right away. He certainly can, if he’s as good as advertised and if Kiffin wants to make a point about playing freshmen. But RB is the one place on the Vol offense where Tennessee is both deep and talented already, which should free the staff and Brown to go at their own pace with the kid instead of throwing him into something he may or may not be ready for.
agreed, our depth is now
quite nice and with Creer and Hardesty, there is no need to rush either Brown or Oku on to the field. I guarantee that Kiffin will have some sets for Oku and Brown to get their feet wet. If they shine at those points throughout the season, we could really see both confidence and swagger going into their sophomore campaigns.
Hopefully we’ll have some solid OLs in next years class.

srsly
when i saw that there were 8 votes for passing, the first thing i thought was o rly? in all seriousness, probably some lsu and bama fans rushed over here. just sayin’.
Wanna hear some music?
No, I"m sure there are some UT fans who think this way
Because our coaching staff is a collection of idiots who engaged in dirty recruiting tactics with an individual who is already being investigated by the NCAA.
Oh that was me.
Just kidding, who do you think I am, some sort of Miami fan?

Exciting.
I’ve been hesitant to embrace Kiffin.
I didn’t always like the performance of Fulmer teams on the field, but I loved the way Fulmer directed the program with dignity and class. Kiffin’s comments have made it hard for me to come around.
This however, makes me feel much more confident in the future of UT football whether Kiffin stays 30 years or 3. At the worst right now, I feel like Lane turns out to be our version of Ron Zook, and with Monte and DacoachO manning the defense, I don’t see that as a likely scenario. At least I know we’re not the next Nebraska.
:) Gettin the #1 recruit, going to the big dance for the 4th year in a row….It’s great to be a Tennessee Vol.
I’m almost disappointed I’ve got Avett Brothers tickets on Apil 18th…almost.
Avett Bros where @?
Knox?

They are playing at the Chattanooga Tivoli.
It’s the same day as the Orange and White game IIRC.
They are probably my favorite band, I absolutely love their music, and this will be my first opportunity to see them live. Pretty excited.
But back to football… We got Bryce Brown woo woo! :)

never be disapointed to see the avetts
those boys bring the heat and the dance party like not many other bands are capable of doing in a live setting
if you don’t know ’em RTT folks, check out some youtubage:
Of course I'm not saying it's going to happen
But Bryce Brown and Monte Kiffin at UT has to be really appealing for Arthur doesn’t it? This is total speculation by the way and isn’t meant to be taken seriously at all, atm.
Wanna hear some music?
w00t
A recruiting top 10! I can’t wait until we can be like Bama and win a Recruiting National Championship lol
Bruce Feldman should write a sequel to 'Meat Market'
This Tennessee super-staff is out of this world.

For sure
With the exception of PTI and perhaps Chris Low, we have gotten alot of flack outside of the Knoxville area.
It would be pretty sweet if Fledman wrote a sequel. He could call it, “The Return of Running Back U”
Chris Low has been less than complementary in my opinion
And he’s still up to it today. More backhanded praise for UT signing Bryce Brown.
I don't know how he's been less than compementary
In his blog he stats the obvious:
He’s obviously a terrific player and is the kind of talent that could be a difference-maker immediately this fall when he gets on campus. But with the NCAA poking around on his advisor, you can’t help but wonder if he’s worth the risk.

as a follow up
We’ll find out soon enough.

I havent seen the Bryce Brown article yet
but Chris Low has been slow to accept the new staff. But maybe that is a good thing, he certainly has kept a pretty level head about many of the things we’ve heard about CLK and has not been one crying foul like a lot of the other sportswriters.
Could be that he is unsure of the coaches themselves, or just trying to stay a bit more middle road.
now with less meyton panning.
by Pride of the Southland on Mar 16, 2009 4:27 PM EDT up reply actions
i think
we all just can’t recognize legitimate journalism when we see it any more. waiting for events to actually unfold before you speculate/“report” on them? what a concept!
low is right to let kiffin prove who he is in knoxville after some games have been played before passing judgment one way or the other. deciding whether or not kiffin and co. are good at this before any downs have been played and before any scores have been recorded is best left to the fans.
The Dual Threat, Official Enforcer/Stat Geek of MCM.
The other problem is
That so many writers have written Labe Kiffen off as not knowing what he’s doing in taking on the big dogs in the conference before he plays them. You’ll get what’s coming to you blah blah blah childish blah blah blah maybe the Evil Lord of the RaiderSith was right now we’re just trying to find stuff to hate etc. etc. etc.
I like the way Chris Low has handled the affair, not really passing judgment (which he’s not paid to do.) and the folks at PTI think he’s doing exactly what he needs to to get the Orange Ship turned upside down.

Low
The article seems to be much more critical of Butler than of Brown. The write up on Monte and Berry the other day was pretty strong in favor of the new direction for the Vols.
I think almost any sports writer would have to say “we’ll see” about Brown with all the junk that has come with his recruiting process.
Another thing this does:
Especially with Oku to go along with it, it takes a LOT of pressure of of next years class.
I mean we go from 2 weeks ago needing to recruit at least 2 RBs next year to possibly start carrying the brunt of the load as Freshman, to having 3 guys coming into camp who could potentially contribute right away, but likely won’t be the only guys in the stable until 2011.
I don’t know much about recruiting, but you have to imagine that that’s going to free up a great recruiter like Eddie Gran or David Reeves to focus on QBs and Offensive Line which is what we need desperately.
