March Madness opening day open thread
Yeah, Tennessee doesn't start the Tournament until tomorrow, but that doesn't mean you won't be watching your brackets, right?
This here's your open thread for opening day of the 2009 NCAA Tournament.
Watch the games LIVE right here without leaving RTT!

I'm thinking I should have given LSU and MSU more credit
I have both of them out in the first round..
I had LSU moving on, but not MSU.
FWIW.
by David Hooper on Mar 19, 2009 12:44 PM EDT up reply actions
I kind of have an inflated opinion of Butler
Based on their games against us. They seem to be slowing this game down which might frustrate LSU.
by Getoffmyvols on Mar 19, 2009 12:49 PM EDT up reply actions
It's certainly looking better now than at the start.
Butler might make you look smart yet.
by David Hooper on Mar 19, 2009 12:49 PM EDT up reply actions
I did three different brackets...
..all on different sites. Of course for the RTT bracket, I had to pick the Vols to go all the way. I also picked MSU and LSU to win at least their first round games…
Ya gotta dream!
Possibly.
I have flashblock, so the widget isn’t currently active for me.
by David Hooper on Mar 19, 2009 1:01 PM EDT up reply actions
Not to worry.
We may not like Calipari, but he’s a good enough coach to get them through this.
by David Hooper on Mar 19, 2009 1:21 PM EDT up reply actions
I'm in and out.
work demands at least a little attention.
by David Hooper on Mar 19, 2009 1:46 PM EDT up reply actions
That'd be fantastic!
I still think Memphis will win, but this is the reason I place no real stock in my bracket: I love to root for the extreme upsets.
by David Hooper on Mar 19, 2009 1:55 PM EDT up reply actions
CA Northridge...
hanging in there like a hair in a biscuit!
Seriously, would that screw up a huge number of brackets, or what?
Vegas would be laughing all night long.
That’d leave about 6 brackets in the whole nation with a possibility of going perfect.
by David Hooper on Mar 19, 2009 2:03 PM EDT up reply actions
I'll happily take it
I’ll bust up my Elite Eight to see THS go down any day
by Will Shelton on Mar 19, 2009 2:04 PM EDT up reply actions
Let's point out too
That CS-Northridge has now scored more points in 29 minutes against Memphis than we did the whole game
err....
I hesitantly picked butler to win that game…judging by their performance against UT last March
Anybody
catch Jimmy Fallon picking Chattanooga to upset UConn? He had signs for the audience, confetti, etc. It was pretty funny. My buddy goes to UTC and wouldn’t stop talking about it…
Yeah, I'm in Chattanooga and an alum
And it’s the greatest thing thats happened to us fo sho.
Official MCM Hater!
All the UTC people I know
Have been facebooking that clip like there’s no tomorrow all week

The refs are probably going to get a call
like in the Buffalo Wild Wings commercial…don’t let this happen!
I’m a conspiracy nut…
killed me too
now with less meyton panning.
by Pride of the Southland on Mar 19, 2009 2:37 PM EDT up reply actions
This is a big win for the SEC (if they make free throws)
didn’t want to go 0-3, which was certainly a possibility.
Somehow I forgot to pick the winners in my bracket.
Im so disappointed in myself.
now with less meyton panning.
by Pride of the Southland on Mar 19, 2009 2:37 PM EDT reply actions
So hard for these bottom seeds to pull this off
They have to play at a level so much higher than they’re used to, and do it for the whole game. CS-Northridge did it for 33 minutes, Radford apparently could only do it for 4…Chattanooga is right with UConn after 8 minutes, but their chances seem so fragile because you feel like they’d never make it back from any run.
Pretty much.
I think the nerves are what get them. Especially as a 16, when you know that nobody’s ever won as one before, a close game gets the nervous energy flowing.
by David Hooper on Mar 19, 2009 3:31 PM EDT up reply actions
Sweet.
I’m in a holding pattern right now, so that gives me something to do.
by David Hooper on Mar 19, 2009 4:10 PM EDT up reply actions
Also
…and I messed up the math last time I tried to do this, but I think UConn is on something like a 45-5 run
regardless of the math,
It’s a whole lot to not nearly enough. ;-)
by David Hooper on Mar 19, 2009 4:33 PM EDT up reply actions
Can we still count beating them as a win against a tourney team?
I swear, I still don’t understand how the #6 SoCon team missed the playin game.
by Chris Pendley on Mar 19, 2009 4:47 PM EDT up reply actions
A Maryland win would be a great help to my bracket.
FWIW.
by David Hooper on Mar 19, 2009 4:42 PM EDT up reply actions
A Maryland win would be a terrible thing period.
My bracket doesn’t matter once the games start.
by Chris Pendley on Mar 19, 2009 4:45 PM EDT up reply actions
So
I got the games right so far except BYU falling, but I had them out next round anyways so no biggie.
So far, I have them all.
not that it’s by any grace of skill
by David Hooper on Mar 19, 2009 4:50 PM EDT up reply actions
I think I do too?
Forget if I had CSN. ;)
by Chris Pendley on Mar 19, 2009 4:50 PM EDT up reply actions
I know I don't.
It was the only pick I even thought about.
by Chris Pendley on Mar 19, 2009 4:51 PM EDT up reply actions
That,
and Cal is just one more team that shouldn’t have been seeded ahead of Tennessee. ;-)
by David Hooper on Mar 19, 2009 4:52 PM EDT up reply actions
Is it just me...
…or does the Cal guy with the ponytail move like a girl?
Maybe it’s just the ponytail that’s affecting my perception….
I think
they tilted it. Maryland stepped it up.

New pronounciation: Fo-ul-Trou-ble
Go figure, he’s not getting the gift calls this time around.
No, I’m not bitter, why do you ask?

From ESPN Front Page:
No. 2 Memphis dug deep to reach Round 2
~~ Anyone else thinkin it? dug deep? Number 2? .. I am juvenile :(
"Fully set up"?
Do you need three computers?
by Chris Pendley on Mar 19, 2009 7:19 PM EDT up reply actions
American, Michigan, Minnesota, Akron
Go big or go home.
For brackets: all of that in reverse, I think.
by Chris Pendley on Mar 19, 2009 7:21 PM EDT up reply actions
Ignoring brackets, it'd be fun for Michigan to lose.
Brian Cook’s rants are always better that way.
by David Hooper on Mar 19, 2009 7:23 PM EDT up reply actions
[we've secretly switched Clemson's basket with a trampoline...]
[…let’s see if they notice the difference…]
Wow.
I think I know what you’re getting at.
o.O
by David Hooper on Mar 19, 2009 7:34 PM EDT up reply actions
He's from Cody.
That’s near Yellowstone in the Northwest. I grew up in the central region, and he’s about 13 years younger than I am. So the odds are I never crossed paths.
But I think you’re talking about this.
by David Hooper on Mar 19, 2009 7:35 PM EDT up reply actions
I knew you were from WY so thought i'd ask... someone should copy it in Dunk Contest but land on feet... insta win!
Heh.
It’s amazing how frequently people ask if I know some other particular person from Wyoming. I don’t know what’s worse: their expectation that I do, or that I think I actually might know the person.
:-)
by David Hooper on Mar 19, 2009 7:40 PM EDT up reply actions
I get that with UT grads.
Yes, I know an English major who graduated in 2003. Why wouldn’t I, aside from the fact we weren’t in the same major and didn’t graduate at the same time at all? We had to have known each other, since we were on campus at the same time and all.
by Chris Pendley on Mar 19, 2009 7:41 PM EDT up reply actions
I was waiting for someone to make that joke.
I was just going to call them ’Merican.
by Chris Pendley on Mar 19, 2009 7:29 PM EDT up reply actions
Tim's ...uh, bringing the suck tonight. Not gonna lie.
by Chris Pendley on Mar 19, 2009 7:36 PM EDT up reply actions
That's it, I'm done watching this game. This is your fault, Mr. Brando.
by Chris Pendley on Mar 19, 2009 7:41 PM EDT up reply actions
Michigan / Clemson.
Timmah must’ve thought he was still on Raycom or something. It was painful.
by Chris Pendley on Mar 19, 2009 7:43 PM EDT up reply actions
They still have the lead!
I’m using exclamation points, but I want to see American be close in the 25th minute, not the 15th.
by Chris Pendley on Mar 19, 2009 7:50 PM EDT up reply actions
They gave UT a lot of trouble last year, IIRC.
by David Hooper on Mar 19, 2009 7:51 PM EDT up reply actions
They did.
We were a weak 2 to begin with, but that was the pod of doom, IIRC. I didn’t want to face any of those teams; I’m still convinced that Butler wasn’t a 10 seed, and I thought American should’ve been a 14.
by Chris Pendley on Mar 19, 2009 7:52 PM EDT up reply actions
I remember that bracket.
We went from thinking “maybe a 1 seed” to “ugh” so, so quickly.
by David Hooper on Mar 19, 2009 7:53 PM EDT up reply actions
Yeah, I haven't been happy with seeding the last two years.
The 5 seed we had a few years ago? That was legit, although the demolition of Long Beach State in the first round was awesome.
And I still think we should’ve beaten Ohio State.
by Chris Pendley on Mar 19, 2009 7:55 PM EDT up reply actions
Anyone else notice a lack of good offense in the tounrey so far... only UNC could score at will today...
UConn is pissed at you for saying that
by Chris Pendley on Mar 19, 2009 7:56 PM EDT up reply actions
Well, no game has really been low scoring other than Purdue / UNI from what I can tell.
Of course, none of the games were barnburners either. On the other hand, we’ve had 3 Big Ten teams play. What do you expect? :)
by Chris Pendley on Mar 19, 2009 7:58 PM EDT up reply actions
There have been a lot of turnovers for cheap points in the games I've seen.
I think that might mask some of the halfcourt woes.
by David Hooper on Mar 19, 2009 7:59 PM EDT up reply actions
Perhaps.
The Michigan / Clemson game looks like a barnburner, and the Texas / Minnesota game might be the closest game that nobody knows is happening. Notice a trend?
by Chris Pendley on Mar 19, 2009 8:01 PM EDT up reply actions
Aw man, halftime.
Fun on hold; go Zips!
by Chris Pendley on Mar 19, 2009 8:14 PM EDT up reply actions
Seriously, hoop, once the second half starts you need to watch this game.
This has been actually watchable, unlike some other games involving teams that I will not name but are named Michigan and Minnesota.
by Chris Pendley on Mar 19, 2009 8:07 PM EDT up reply actions
They flipped over for the final minute or so.
American better not be teasing us here. I want an upset!
by David Hooper on Mar 19, 2009 8:11 PM EDT up reply actions
Barring a huge 'Nova run, it should be close at the end.
Of course, ‘Nova can go on a run. Not that I want it to happen (turf my Elite Eight pick? Don’t care, want the upset).
by Chris Pendley on Mar 19, 2009 8:12 PM EDT up reply actions
I had them Final Four.
Not that I know why. I spent a whole 5 minutes on my bracket. But I’ll gladly watch it go up in flames.
by David Hooper on Mar 19, 2009 8:15 PM EDT up reply actions
I have way too much Big East in my bracket.
I’m kind of ashamed at it, but since I only spent 5 minutes on it myself I’m not going to feel too bad over it.
by Chris Pendley on Mar 19, 2009 8:18 PM EDT up reply actions
I wanted a picture of Kool-Aid man breaking through the wall on Family Guy.
I bring this up because it’s either this or I talk about Big Ten basketball.
by Chris Pendley on Mar 19, 2009 8:20 PM EDT up reply actions
er, Ogelsby
All those “og” players are similar.
by Chris Pendley on Mar 19, 2009 8:28 PM EDT up reply actions
Sorry, Trevor Booker is their leading scorer.
Oglesby is their third-leading scorer.
by Chris Pendley on Mar 19, 2009 8:32 PM EDT up reply actions
Although he might be their leading scorer tonight.
I’m not watching Big Ten basketball and braving Tim Brando in Raycom mode.
by Chris Pendley on Mar 19, 2009 8:31 PM EDT up reply actions
I was watching Gonzaga and Akron
I think I have Gonzaga going to the Final Four. Can’t remember. I know Memphis State is in there somewhere.
Oooh, Memphis State?
I was always partial to the University of Memphis State University myself. (Or Tiger High.)
by Chris Pendley on Mar 19, 2009 8:34 PM EDT up reply actions
You watch soccer don't you?
How tone-deaf is the MLS? Opening the season on the first night of the NCAA Tournament.
Perhaps they don't fill out brackets.
After all, only about 99.83% of American adults actually do.
by David Hooper on Mar 19, 2009 8:40 PM EDT up reply actions
Shiny and proud.
The instant we won, we scooted out so we could get back to Knoxville in time to curl in our league that night. We made it just in time, and we wore the pins throughout the game.
by David Hooper on Mar 19, 2009 8:43 PM EDT up reply actions
American up 9 at the under-16.
They just need to play at -8 the rest of the way; I’m not sure they have it in them, but I hope I’m wrong.
They flipped me over to that as well.
It was Clemson-Michigan, but that got out of hand.
by David Hooper on Mar 19, 2009 8:41 PM EDT up reply actions
Michigan will win that?
Did Clemson at least blow out a couple of tires when they imploded?
by Chris Pendley on Mar 19, 2009 8:42 PM EDT up reply actions
They're only down 8.
They’re at least mathematically in it.
by Chris Pendley on Mar 19, 2009 8:46 PM EDT up reply actions
Trainwreck? Where do I sign?
It’s either that or watch Texas pull away from Minnesota.
Well, watch either of those games as the other game.
by Chris Pendley on Mar 19, 2009 8:44 PM EDT up reply actions
Two injuries and an ejection?
Man, I’m missing all the fun.
by Chris Pendley on Mar 19, 2009 8:51 PM EDT up reply actions
They only played 3 games in that arena.
You can’t play more than 3 games in any tourney arena, so they slide in under that exception.
by Chris Pendley on Mar 19, 2009 8:44 PM EDT up reply actions
They just switched us over to 'Merican.
I guess if you must watch a blowout, it might as well be the best upset…
'Merican's dangerously close to foul trouble here.
I think ‘Nova will pull this out late, the signs are really pointing in their direction. They’re already in the one-and-one and ‘Merican can’t keep on shooting better from beyond the arc than they are inside the arc.
by Chris Pendley on Mar 19, 2009 8:47 PM EDT up reply actions
I think the Big East might not be as strong as ESPN thinks.
They ain’t faring too well in the NIT. Georgetown and Providence got beat and Notre Dame is getting beat right now.
Georgetown and Notre Dame aren't good teams.
I think everyone figured that out, and ESPN was never really sold on the Friars. I think I liked them more than their talking heads.
Besides, most of the love was of the Pitt / UConn / Syracuse variety. Even Louisville didn’t get much love from them.
by Chris Pendley on Mar 19, 2009 8:49 PM EDT up reply actions
Is Tim Brando always this bad?
I swear, I turned the sound on again and ….either he was back at it or something, I don’t know. I guess Clemson is reflecting the announcing.
It feels ....weird to have a crowd so openly cheering for the favorite in the tourney.
Is it just me?
I'm REALLY starting to dislike this crowd.
Maybe it’s just Philly crowds in general that drive me nuts. This is wrong.
