Orson Charles Update

On Tennessee: "I feel real good about the coaches and I think they know what they want to do and what they want to accomplish," Charles said. "Right from the get go I talked to some of the players when I was there and what Lane told us, he told them. He said there is not going to be any walk-throughs, you have to earn your spot. That is the type of coach I would like to be coached by, that's strong right there. The players feel they are more competitive and they will win many more games than they did last year. And playing in front of 108,000 people, that is just crazy. I walked on the field and I got goose bumps. I was looking around and I was like, wow."

On USC: "The name speaks for itself. That's just USC. I had never been to LA. I got to watch games. Got to sit next to Barkley, talk to him and Anthony McCoy. I got to ask Taylor Mays why he stayed all four years and none of them had anything bad to say. I enjoyed talking to Pete Carroll he is a real cool guy. I have seen some of his film and he is real intense. I know his son coaches tight ends, he coached Fred Davis up, and I know that the offensive coordinator they just got came from Denver and he does the same thing so USC is not going to change, they use more two tight end sets so if I come in , I have a great opportunity to play as a freshman, if I compete like I know I can, and win a spot. Hopefully I could just take it from there."

On Georgia: "Out of all the schools, I know them the best. I have a good relationship with Coach Lilly; I have a good relationship with Aaron and a couple of the other boys. Mettenberger he is just hilarious, I was just chilling with him on my official and some guys that try to be funny, and he is just hilarious. I talked to Derrick Lott; we really kicked it on the visit. It was to the point that if I went to Georgia, I would really like to room with him.... His mom and my mom really left on a good note. I have been talking and texting Aaron lately as well."

In the Rivals article, he does admit that he does have one school that’s a little bit of a favorite. Who knows, really?

I'm guessing that the Rivals article is the "source in Tampa" that the Scout article mentions.

It’ll be interesting. I’m just happy that his recruitment – even for being “late” – hasn’t been the firestorm that others have been. It’s been a fun season, but it’s getting very tiring.

Yes, it has been.

But after Friday we’ll be that much closer to having this whole thing wrapped up.

The 1970 game between Alabama and USC has been heralded by many (usually Trojan fans) as the contest which lead to the integration of Crimson Tide football. It's nonsense, of course, but that hasn't stopped that version of the story from spreading by West Coast revisionists.

One reasons Tennessee fans should be disappointed with this sloppy telling of history is that it almost completely discounts a historic game involving the Vols a year earlier.

In 1969, Lester McClain and Jackie Walker (pictured above) started in the Third Saturday in October game and broke the color line at Birmingham's Legion Field (a third black player, Andy Bennett, got into the game as well). Not only that, the Vols handed Bear Bryant's Tide team a 41-14 beatdown that afternoon.

I tell a bit of the tale at Roll Bama Roll today in my scathing review of a book about the 1970 Alabama vs. USC game, One Night, Two Teams.
