Around SBN: Ellenberger vs. Sanchez Heats Up, Hughes Talks Retirement

No permalink, but the story currently at the top has Basilio reporting a rumor that Tennessee QB B.J. Coleman is "strongly considering" transferring to UTC.

(HT: raynoch46)

[UPDATE] The Chattanooga Times Free Press has an audio from B.J. Coleman confirming that he is leaving the program. Link here. (Opens in new window.)

And this is where we take a deep breath.

I do like TB, but I’m also cautious when news like this first comes from him. He’s more aggressive about reporting controversial news than many other sources (partly because he has to be).

I almost wish he would

To get people to shut up about Coleman for a while.

I keed. Hopefully he decides to stay and continue working hard.

by rblakeh on Apr 23, 2009 1:33 PM EDT reply actions

I think BJ sees the writing on the wall

No matter what you think about Crompton, I think the 2010 starting QB is still in high school. I wouldn’t blame the kid if he left.

by Will Shelton on Apr 23, 2009 1:46 PM EDT reply actions

If he does leave, the honeymoon for Kiffin will officialy be over

Tell Tajh Boyd not to come, and there will be some grumblings. But lose the instate player who some fans believe could be the best QB to ever wear the orange, and you just might have a mutiny on your hands.

If he does leave, that is all I will need to know about Coleman, assuming his reason is because he hasn’t gotten a “fair shake.” I find it hard to believe that every position is open for competition (minus EB’s), but Crompton’s isn’t.

I think in all likelihood he is afraid of being the perpetual 3rd, maybe 4th string. He has yet to look better than Stephens (accept for this last O&W game), and who knows what Rozier brings to the table. And we in all likelihood have two top level QBs coming in next year (Heaps and Hendrix are my prediction).

by rblakeh on Apr 23, 2009 1:48 PM EDT reply actions

I think you're right that..

…this year’s QB is a placeholder no matter who it is. At least Coleman might have a year or two to make a name for himself somewhere else if he transfers.

I agree our 2010 QB is not on campus

He will be here in January (Heaps is a midtermer).

by rblakeh on Apr 23, 2009 2:06 PM EDT up reply actions

If the rumor has any truth behind it, I would expect it to be more because of Rozier than Crompton.

Adding Rozier fills in that 2-year gap that UT has in quarterback and makes Coleman not the youngest QB on the team. If Crompton or Stephens were to start this next year, then any window of progression effectively disappears.

Again, if.

by David Hooper on Apr 23, 2009 1:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Honeymoon won't be over now

…but it will be the first time Crompton throws three INTs in a game, and fans can say “Well, we would’ve had Coleman, but Kiffin ran him off!”

by Will Shelton on Apr 23, 2009 3:16 PM EDT up reply actions

So if Heaps were to commit soon and BJ were to leave, would you

(a) call it an overall win?

(b) call it even?

© call it an overall loss?

(d) head up the FIRE KIFFIN bandwagon?

(all based on the “now” knee-jerk reaction in your gut)

by David Hooper on Apr 23, 2009 3:03 PM EDT up reply actions

Overall win, easy

Coleman has many of the intangibles, but so do I. I am a hard worker, and I want to win. I’ll do whatever it takes. But I’m 6’0" 180 lbs with no true football acumen. Sometimes the intangibles just aren’t enough. Just like having the tangibles isn’t enough either (Crompton). If you took all 3 of our quarterbacks… heck, all 4 now that we’ve got Rozier, and combined them into one… whoa, nelly!

Jake Heaps

Film

Fast forward to like 2:00. Watch him flick his wrist to throw the ball about 45 yards. As a junior (maybe sophomore) in HS he is playing better than any one of our QBs, and it’s not even close.*

*I realize the difference in competition, etc. I’m just talking about his mechanics.

Rumor

Now I am seeing that it HAS happened… not that it MIGHT happen… Hm…

by rblakeh on Apr 23, 2009 3:27 PM EDT reply actions

Where to now

Any indication regarding where Coleman ends up? TB said UTC, but the TFP gave no indication.

by raynoch46 on Apr 23, 2009 4:00 PM EDT reply actions

He hasn't said yet.

You’d have to think UTC is his first option, but he has time to figure it out.

by David Hooper on Apr 23, 2009 4:20 PM EDT up reply actions

This one puzzles me a bit.

Dude’s a Sophomore and he doesn’t want to be playing behind a a Senior? I mean, I realize no one wants to play behind anyone, but it isn’t exactly like Coleman has proven he’s any better than Crompton or vice versa. They’ve been pretty much equal from what I understand, and the coaches have just started going more in the direction of the older guy. It’s like alphabetizing, sort of.

My biggest problem with this is that he said he didn’t think he was being given a fair shake at the job.. I just find that a little bit ridiculous. No, I’m not saying good riddance, as I was excited about having this guy as a Junior and a Senior, but it sure seems like he’s living in some alternate reality from the rest of us.

by samhitch on Apr 23, 2009 4:25 PM EDT reply actions

Maybe he hasn't proved he deserves it.

But he is really sure he has done what it takes. That’s the attitude difference between him and Crompton. Crompton says stuff like, “I’m gonna keep practicing like I’m last on the depth chart,” and Coleman says, “I proved myself and they didn’t give me a fair chance.” Based on comments like that alone, I’d much rather have Cromp and his signature Crompton Worm Burner instead of Coleman and his “intangibles”.

Wanna hear some music?

by samhitch on Apr 23, 2009 4:57 PM EDT up reply actions

And I find the arguement that

“Crompton quit too when he realized he wasn’t getting the starting job 3 years ago,” a pretty weak, not to mention cheap, argument. Crompton quit by whining like a brat and decided he wasn’t going to work hard. Coleman quit the team.

by samhitch on Apr 23, 2009 5:02 PM EDT up reply actions

So you're mad at Coleman because he doesn't want to ride the bench, and he doesn't feel he is being given a fair shake.

How do you know he hasn’t done what it takes? Coleman is the one who has looked better in scrimmages, no?

And you have to understand that there is a huge groundswell of support for Coleman..

A guy who has proven nothing. I don’t know if you check out Volquest, but there is a very vocal majority of posters there who had convinced themselves over the last couple of weeks that Coleman will be the best QB to wear the orange. All that has been said is what a great leader he is and how much his teammates love him… but he quits and tells the media before he tells his coach and teammate. That’s weak sauce, man.

by rblakeh on Apr 23, 2009 8:45 PM EDT up reply actions

So what has Crompton proven?

That he can throw it at Gerald Jones’ feet when we only need 1 more first down for the field goal.

And CLK knew he was leaving this morning, after their meeting, long before the media.

Don’t make stuff up, that’s weak sauce, man.

Tennessee coaches have not been informed that quarterback B.J. Coleman has decided to leave the Volunteers, a team spokesman said Thursday.

The rising sophomore told the Chattanooga Times Free Press he has decided to move on because he was frustrated after participating in the Volunteers’ spring practice.

Neither Coleman nor his parents responded to phone calls from The Associated Press seeking comment. Volunteers spokesman John Painter said coach Lane Kiffin was not aware of any plans by the Chattanooga native to lead the team.

I guess everyone is lying. Coleman just can’t catch a break.

Where did I say that Crompton has proven anything?

He was abysmal last year. I never thought he’d see the field again. But, CLK says he’s playing better… I trust him.

I don’t think any of our quarterbacks are capable of doing anything spectacular. Right now, CLK says Crompton is playing best. If in August he says that Rozier is playing best, that’s who I will be happy with as starter. Right now, though (personally), I have no confidence in anyone on our roster. But I do trust CLK to choose the best of the bunch. The difference between you and I is that I don’t pretend to think that I should be making the decision of who should play. Kiffin has held open competition for all spots on the roster… I don’t think he’s doing anything different in this situation.

Coleman quit because he wasn’t prepared to compete this year and next year.

by rblakeh on Apr 24, 2009 12:10 AM EDT up reply actions

Never fear

If all else fails, Mike Rozier can don #45 and run the single wing. Isn’t that why Johnny’s been at practice this fall?

I don't blame him. Even if he won the starting job this season

He will never be Kiffin’s guy…and as soon as Kiffin’s guy gets here (Heaps), then he would be back on the bench.

Wondering . . .

. . . back in the summer of 2006, coming off of Erik Ainge’s spectacular failure in the LSU end zone and for the rest of the 2005 season, weren’t fans scared to death of him piloting the offense in 2006? Screaming for the backup to relieve him of his duties?

Who was that again?

;-)

I remember sitting in the student section that year.

I lost count of the number of times I heard screams to the effect of “****in’ Ainge!” That, and puzzlement why the other guy wasn’t playing were very common in ’06.

by David Hooper on Apr 23, 2009 10:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah.

That defines him.

by samhitch on Apr 24, 2009 12:13 AM EDT up reply actions

So what does? Him beating Kentucky?

In my mind, Ainge will be remembered for the two AWFUL throws he made against LSU when we could have won the game.

What will you remember him for?

I will gladly have this season play out with an East championship

And losing the game in the 4th quarter to the eventual national champions.

by rblakeh on Apr 24, 2009 12:39 AM EDT up reply actions

My point is that Ainge did not magically turn into some world beater

The coaches just figured out that for him to be successful, he would have to throw a lot of quick passes and quick outs.

I agree

He did make it to the league, and it’s debatable how much help he got at the OLine and at the receiver, but I agree, it’s not like he’s a Manning.

But I think we can all agree that we would take an Ainge like performance out of Crompton this year!

by rblakeh on Apr 24, 2009 8:51 AM EDT up reply actions

Biggest difference

Ainge had the success of 2004 and the proven commodity of David Cutcliffe. Crompton has two prayers against LSU that were answered by Robert Meachem.
