Robert Marve Considering Walking On At UT

Sources: Marve considering Vols

Chris Low is reporting that Robert has considered a move to UT. It was previously reported that Marve would take a scholarship to play at the University of Purdue.

Marve loved the Purdue coaches during his visit and the chance to compete for the starting position in 2010. He came close to finalizing a decision to play for the Boilermakers last week. But he also long has been intrigued by the Vols.

I'm sure Kiffin and Co. had no problem pitching him the chance to compete for the job in 2010. Which would likely be his for the taking, considering the lack of depth at the position.

Miami won't release Marve to Tennessee, Florida or LSU in the Southeastern Conference because it believes tampering occurred prior to his departure from the Hurricanes.

Marve is struggling with the choice, because he would have a chance to compete for the Volunteers' starting quarterback position in 2010, but would have to pay for school at Tennessee in 2009.

Sounds like the only real road block is Miami's tampering claim stated above. Hypothetically, could he earn a scholarship after he's walked on?

Marve's father, Eugene, said the choice was down to two teams, but would not name the two. He added that a decision likely won't be made until Friday or next week.

"There's a team that was thrown in, that we started investigating late and trying to get that information and put it against all the factors," Eugene Marve said.

Could Tennessee be making another late push at another player formerly from the state of Florida? I'm intrigued.

This was my 1st FanPost, hope I got it right. Thanks guys.

First fanpost and straight to front page!

Pretty good precedent to set for yourself, so I’d say you did a great job

now with less meyton panning.

Haha...

Beginners luck :)
I guess my only question is, if he walks on could he eventually earn a scholarship?

by bsmithinc on May 13, 2009 10:33 PM EDT reply actions

My understanding is that he can.

He wouldn’t be able to for the first year if Miami doesn’t allow it. (It has to do with the NCAA not wanting schools poaching players from other schools, so there are heavy restrictions on transfers that favor the first institution.) However, that’s only for the first year of a transfer. In 2010, he could try for a scholarship.

Gaping hole = Opportunity

It’s the most well-publicized gaping hole in college football’s elite conference – UT’s QB situation. I knew it would help with recruiting, but I didn’t realize we’d have a couple of quality guys (Rozier, Marve,) try to walk on NOW to get into the position early.

Elsewhere, it looks like we will miss out on a couple of our top QB 2010 choices and they are expanding the candidates who are receiving offers. Any one of the candidates will likely be the best QB in a decade, if their production matches their talent. It’s been Elmer Fudd, since Tee Martin (Veewy, Veewy, Quiet).

The Clausens were solid... or at least one of them was

That Ainge guy wasn’t too terrible, either.

And I wouldn’t be too dismissive about our top targets at QB right now. We are still very much in play for Heaps and Scroggins. Heaps is making his decision in June, and Scroggins is coming to camp here June 21. Things are going to get real interesting, real quick.

I'll stick with my observation on UT's QB play being just avg

After Tee Martin was drafted by the Steelers, we didn’t have a QB worth being drafted in any round of any draft for years. You are right about Eric Ainge being better than average – he at least had enough talent to get drafted by the Jets. He’s been underwhelming in the pros though.

I’d still say that we have had pretty average QB play for most of the decade – especially when you look at draft picks in the other positions for UT in the 2000-09 drafts.

If we are still in the mix with Scroggins and Heaps, that’s great news. I’d read elsewhere that the reason we offered new guys is that the others wanted to stay out West. Maybe that’s wrong. I hope rblakeh is right.

I think we are offering the others because we aren't as "in" as we'd like to be with Heaps and Scroggins

Keep two things in mind, though…

A) None of the guys we’ve offered would scare away Heaps or Scroggins
B) Scroggins’ mother is from Memphis (they have family there), so coming East wouldn’t be that big of a deal for them.

I think we are in Heaps’ Top 3. I think BYU leads, followed by UT and then UW. That is based on his comments about his Top 5 (BYU, UT, UW, LSU, and Cal) as well as what he is looking for most out of a school.

We were also one of the first to identify Scroggins. We didn’t officially offer him until recently, but we got in touch with him before he camped and before any other schools. You have to think our chances are good based on that alone.

We clearly wanted Heaps to have committed already. The fact is, he’s waiting til June. By offering these other guys, we haven’t really done much to scare away Heaps… instead we’re just starting to build our relationships with our backup plans. He knows that he is our number 1 guy and that we would still take a commitment from him if he said he wanted to come here. The only way I can see him (or us) not being interested is if Scroggins commits. Noone else that we have offered seems to be in the same league as Heaps.

In the games that I saw, Marve looked good. he has a nice motion and throws a pretty ball. I’ve heard Miami fans say he can’t read defenses and can’t do progressions, but I take that with a grain of salt.

Who knows?

Change the spelling of his last name… give him number 4, and who knows.. maybe a legend in the making. I’m loving all the recruits that Coach K and Company are getting from here in FLA… It’s a beautiful thing.

Marve a hopeful....

I hope Robert Marve really chooses the right school for him… i know i would love to see him play at Tennessee…. He would be a direct impact with our offense, and who better to prepare you for the NFL than the coaching staff at Tennessee… I also hope he wears the number 13 so i can buy one of his jerseys soon…. good luck Robert!
