Why are we getting commits from a bunch of 3 star players?

I do not understand why Kiffin is offering and getting commits from a bunch of inferior talent and are ranked so low by Rivals.com and Scout.com.

Star-divide

We should be going after highly rated 4 and 5 star prospects. We are doing exactly what Fulmer did.... Busting our butts for 2 star good ol boys from stinkin creek, tn. Kiffin said he would nationally recruit and "put a fence around the state of tn" and he has  managed to do neither. He has gone after inferior talent.

Seriously?

It’s 3 months into the new commitment season basically, and you’re calling him out like that? He already has the top prospect in Tennessee locked up, ESPNU’s #30 overall player in a D-lineman, and we’re gonna get at least one top QB. Where have you been? Janzen Jackson? Nu’Keese? Marsalis Teague? David Oku? BRYCE BROWN?!?

C’mon man, give him some time.

It's True

I bleed orange but I am just upset that we are signing all of these average players that wont get us where we need to be. there is a limit of players that you can sign and all of these 3-star commits just take up a lot of space.

You should realize

That part of what makes up a players ranking is what schools have offered them. Another thing you should realize is that a big part of Kiffin and Orgeron’s recruiting strategy is that they are not afraid to be the first or one of the first to offer a scholarship. This can help pay off because the player recognizes the coach believes in them.

A side note I’m just guessing here so correct me if I’m wrong but I’m guessing the commitment of Channing Fugate inspired this post. I’m also guessing you saw that he has 3 stars and assumed his talent was inferior. Well you should also realize he’s playing out of position at tailback ( the staff likes him as a H Back hybrid type) 6’3 230 lbs and is still likely going to break the state record for rushing yards in Kentucky this year.

Please correct me if I’m wrong and tell me if you have other basis other than the dreaded 3 star ranking to write this kid off. Also keep in mind players like Jerod Mayo come in with 3 stars and leave as All SEC top 10 NFL draft choices.

Rivals & Scout report buzz as much as anything else

We had a top 10 class and the #1 RB with less than 6 months to sign Kiffin’s first class. I have heard a lot of criticism from other schools’ fan base about Kiffin but “the inability to recruit and identify talent” is NEVER on the list.

There’s a lot of handwringing about QB because we don’t have one signed yet. C’mon, class, guess which is the operative word in the last sentence – you got it. YET. If we see most of the top candidates off the board in a couple of months, then it’s OK to kvetch.

Until then, relaaaax. We’ll remain in the mix for the absolute best talent in the nation. We’ll win enough signees to have a top 5 class – maybe even #1, if the signing class is a big one. (Rivals & Scout penalize for quality over quantity.)

Someone said it earlier, but it is worth repeating. These guys are really good at identifying talent before everyone hypes up the ratings. They will also chime in on someone when it’s obvious how good they are (Bryce Brown).

3 star players are the meat and potatos of recruits.

Maybe they’re not filet mignon but theres only so many 4 and 5 star recruits to go around. 3s fill the lines and roster, backups, etc. You can’t bank on getting every 4 and 5 star recruit to fill those slots.

Not to mention ranking of college recruits is not an exact science. You have to rely on your ability to judge talent, and prospects and hope that you can pull out those qualities you see in 3 stars and help them step up their game and fill their needed duties above and beyond 3 star projections.

now with less meyton panning.

Our average star rating (3.44) is higher than...

(according to Scout.com)

Alabama, Florida, LSU, Michigan, USC, and others.

That said, all four of those schools are currently ranked higher than us because of the quality (and in some cases, size of classes) of their upper-end recruits.

Don’t fret… things will be just fine.

Forget Rivals

coaches know what they’re doing (especially Kiffin). There have been so many 4 and 5 stars that havent’ even played a down in college football. Those stars are just one group’s ratings. I wouldn’t be too converned with their opinon. I’d rather have good coaching and 3 star guys than some website’s 4 and 5’s. The sec is the best conference in large part because it has the best coaches, not necessarily the most talented players.
