I'm going with More Score for Moore

First the good: I thought it was really important to be able to send Fulmer out on a good note, and losing to Kentucky would most definitely not be that. It was also important to not break the winning streak over Kentucky and to avoid becoming Tennessee’s Worst Team Ever.

It didn’t look like it was a sure thing until this play. Fairly well blocked, Moore completely burned his defender, and Crompton threw a perfect pass to hit Moore in stride. The play also created some momentum and catapulted the Vols to a 28-10 victory and a graceful exit for Fulmer.

But . . . we still have Corkscrew and Clobber (two plays that, as I said yesterday, were the only positive, nationally-relevant things to happen to Tennessee last year), That’s Beautiful (a great play against a great opponent at an important part of an important game that we were still in), and Berry All the Way (which was both fun and important to the season).

Here's where I now dissent from the crowd.

And you’re probably not going to like it, but hear me out. I’m going to vote for Eric Berry Clobbers Knowshon Moreno.

This is based on three thoughts. The first is that I sat back and asked myself: do the Berry plays really deserve that much praise or are they getting extra hype simply because Berry’s involved? In this case, I think the Moreno hit can be seen this way.

The second thought is this: was the play a success? The more I watch that play, the more I am beginning to believe the play was a success for Georgia. It was a running play around the left end of the offensive line: nothing complicated, just an attempt to move the line of scrimmage and keep the drive going. Georgia did exactly that. If you watch the line play, Georgia’s offensive line did a great job blocking and opening up the necessary hole. The delayed exchange allowed the blitzer to overpursue the quarterback and take himself out of position. The skill players on Georgia’s offense blocked the second level nicely. By the time it was all said and done, 10 UGA players took 10 UT players out of the play (counting the QB and the blitzer with the delayed exchange). That is exactly the definition of successful blocking. The difference between this being a TD or a tackle is whether the 11th guy is out of position or otherwise beat by the running back. And really, for UT, that is the only good piece of news on this play: Berry was in position. But even at that, Moreno got 7 yards and a first down. This play was a success for Georgia. Clearly.

Lastly, the hit itself. First the good: Berry was in the right position and took the right angle, allowing himself to bring a ferocious amount of energy to the point of contact. This was very, very good. The bad: the only reason UGA didn’t gain another 15 yards on this play was the capricious judgment of the officials. Berry did hit Moreno in a way that could have been called for helmet-to-helmet. It would have been a weak call, sure, but so was the non-call. With the incredible emphasis on safety and caution in the interpretation of the rules, the officials would have been justified in flagging that hit – especially since it sent enough force to Moreno’s head to effectively end his day. I don’t think the officials screwed up the call because (a) Berry was coming shoulder first, (b) he was obviously not intending to lead with the head, and © Moreno didn’t help the situation when he lowered his own head. But if that flag had been thrown, I could have understood it.

In summary, it was a fantastic play for the sheer entertainment of it. But from any other perspective, UGA beat UT on that play and got exactly what that play is intended to produce – yardage and a first down.

Yeah, I’m sure that’s not going to be popular with pretty much any other UT fan. But the other remaining plays were simply better plays.

You're points are all valid.

However, the Moreno hit was the most satisfying for me. At least from a television viewing perspective. Similar to that of Tebow pick 6 two years ago. Just when I was on the verge of breaking my TV in hopes that I’d never hear another word about Moreno, Berry saves the day and sidelines for the game.

As for the helmet to helmet… I’ll take Orson’s view on the rule,

“Helmet to helmet doesn’t count when its awesome”

"The man who complains about the way the ball bounces is likely to be the one who dropped it."

Agree with Getoffmyvols

Fair points, all. But even described your way, doesn’t that nicely encapsulate the season? The team being beaten and Berry not only saving the day but doing so in particularly emphatic and satisfying fashion. Moreno only played one more play after that. He was completely gone on impact.

And I don’t get the helmet to helmet thing in this context. I understand the point and agree that the officials could have called it, but I would have disagreed with it. I get an email every time someone leaves on comment on the Berry shot on Tyler Donovan (not recommended reading, by the way), and I don’t get it there, either. I wouldn’t be surprised if there was a rule regarding helmet-to-helmet hits when the ball carrier is responsible. If there isn’t, maybe there should be. I’m not expert, but isn’t a form tackle supposed to be around the midsection? If true, then what’s a tackler supposed to do if the carrier puts his head in the target? There are a lot of assumptions in this paragraph, I know, so someone clear me up if I’m wrong. But if it were up to me, I wouldn’t call a helmet to helmet shot if it appears to be inadvertent due to the ball carrier leading with his own head.

That's my thought behind wanting the Maze hit to win.

Besides, it’s just more fun to see some guy flying ~5 yards in the air.

Two points back at you.

One, I’m not worried about encapsulating the season. If this is a “Best Play” votedown, I’m only interested in the quality of the play itself. There’s a lot to love about it, but there are 10 other Vols on the team who didn’t help. It’s not through a lack of effort, and many of them couldn’t have been in a position to contribute simply because of positioning on the field. But the UGA line won up front and the receivers blocked well. It’s kind of like Steve Atwater’s hit on Christian Akoye (referred to as the ‘Hit Heard Round The World’ when it first happened). As lovely as it is to see a safety smash a running back, about the only time that happens is when the running back is already past the line and the linebackers. That is: Berry got him only because Moreno beat the rest of the defense. I really hope that’s not the best we can find from 2008; UGA fans would eventually figure that out and never let us live it down.

As for the helmet-to-helmet thing. As you imply, they’re not supposed to call helmet-helmet hits that are purely incidental and unavoidable in game flow. Really, the problem is leading with the helmet. (The Donovan one was more questionable.) Here, Berry clearly went shoulder first. It shouldn’t have been called and obviously wasn’t, but any time there’s a helmet hitting a helmet, there’s a chance for a penalty. In the first and third angles we see the play, it’s clear the contact was incidental. But in that second angle, you can’t tell that. If the official with the best view happened to be standing at that area, he would not have seen the shoulder and he would have heard the helmets hit. That’s why I say it was closer to being an extra 15 yards than we like to consider.

Good question

Someone want to make a case for that or are we being trolled?

My thinking was that it was more an error on the part of Javier Arenas. Coverage was great and had we been more opportunistic and turned it into a touchdown I might view the play in a different light. I just have a hard time watching that play without thinking of how the only thing that came out of that was negative yards and a chip shot field goal.

It's a punt. People hate considering a punt to be your best play.

Honestly, it’s one of the rare plays where the whole team did everything absolutely right. The blocking was great. The kick was off in a hurry with a long hang and lots of distance. The team got to the point of the catch very quickly and were in a position to make the tackle. (I think Arenas dropped the ball when he saw how close the Vols were; it seemed to mess up his transition from catching to carrying.)

But it’s a punt. As comfortable as I am having it there, I can understand why others wouldn’t want it in the top four. Even setting all representational-seasonal-imagery-of-offensive-futility aside, it’s a punt.
