The most radical Tennessee uniform came with the "Halloween jerseys" of 1963, orange with black numbers, uniforms that weren't a big hit. They went gently into that good night at the end of the season. A 5-5 season and a new coach in town the next season helped make that happen.

If they ever do decide to use black,
they better do it in a way, that outside considerations of tradition, actually looks good. That Halloween idea is bad, no matter how you feel about black on uniforms.
In the picture in that article, though, black was used for number outlining. fwiw

If they ever do that, I’m going to call it out for the cheap merchandising ploy that it is. for what my callout would be worth, at least.
