SEC Media Days live blog: Arkansas Razorbacks

The streaming feed apparently wasn't working for Slive, but perhaps they didn't intend to even do it for that. Bobby Petrino is up next.

I'll live-blog the thing in the comments below. See you there.

Still no live stream from the SEC.

And Sports Animal isn’t paying any attention to either session. Joel, we’re depending on you.

Joel,

Please let me know if he mentions Houston Nutt.

Q: what about coach's second years?

A: first year is tough. Takes time to get systems implemented. Some doubt about what you’re doing; can’t play as fast. 2nd year, you see a lot of improvement b/c they know what you expect and they’re comfrotable.

So when Kiffin and Chizik have better first years than Petrino's second,

will we see airplanes with “Fire Petrino” banners throughout the SEC?

; – )

by David Hooper on Jul 22, 2009 2:19 PM EDT up reply actions

Or...

Will Nutt’s second year be better than his first?

If it is...

do Arkansas fans throw themselves off of buildings?

Q: have the personnel you need now?

Getting there, I think he said.

Four freshmen WRs returning. Did lose two seniors on o-line, but offensively last we were good at times, just not consistent. We’ll be better there w/ addition of some big backs.

Q: DBs coming in, update, how will they fit into rotation?

A1: (Answering the first part of the question I missed.)

A2: Junior college players should be there. One’s here now, the other soon. couple of young corners and safeties.

Sports Animal is running the numbers on the ESPN contract

Each school should get ~$15 mil each year. The previous TV contracts were worth about $5 mil, so there’s a ~$10 mil gain for each school, each year.

Now that’s a Big 10! :-)

Q: Tebow's NFL prospects?

A: Want a guy who’s a great leader, competitor and proven winner. Tim’s done all of those. He’s tremendous. He can make all of the throws. No question he’ll be sucessful in NFL.

Q: Getting harded to find pocket QBs?

A: Not so much just that, but finding an under center guy b/c of so many HS QBs taking snaps in shotgun.

Q: What can you do w/ Mallett this season that you couldn't do last year?

A: Got him to lose weight. He can throw the deep ball well. Hope to do that more this year. He’s also more mobile now. Can move the pocket now. Take pressure off o-line.

Q: Do you feel more comfortable in 2nd year?

A: Feel more comfortable standing here today than he did last year. Joke. But yeah, feel much more comfortable. Everybody knowing more what to expect this season.

Q: 1. How did you get Mallet? 2. On defensive end, what's it like watching the games you fall behind in?

A: Got a call that he was interested in transferring after Mallet got the release. Ryan’s always wanted to go to Arkansas. First phoen call he made; visited; got an understanding of what they wanted to do; made the decision. Very happy.

A: He’s repressed those memories. They were tough. Had a tough stretch w/ Texas, AL, FL. They use those to show how they need to be consistent.

Q: how important is exp. For a QB. How hard to win w/out one?

A: Very critical due to the speed. That’s a concern. Ryan played as true freshman at Michigan, so that will help him. Hard to win a C w/out good QB play.

What is this?

Why in the world are they going to inquisit everybody over this? Don’t they realize that the coaches will simply vote the expected party lines next year?

by David Hooper on Jul 22, 2009 2:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Q: What about Malcolm?

A: Penetration, abilityto rush passer. Trying to put some knowledge together w/ those instincts. Ancticipating a good year.

Q: At what point did o-line get it last year?

A: Too awhile and have a ways to go, especially in passing game. We have to run the ball better.

Q: Who's the QB 10?

A: That’s “Nick.” Wants to be a football coach. Must be a relation.

Q: How hard to make jump to contention in the West?

A: It’s going to be hard. We’ll be better. How many wins? Yet to be seen. Had a lot of close games last year; hopefully offseason work will allow us to win more. Want to win all home games.

Q: Update on Brandon Barnet and Davis? How will you use them?

A: Davis is doing great. Cutting, changing directions. Barnett is a bit behind, hopefully he’ll get caught up. Probably limited when start practice.

Q: Re: strength and conditioning; Mallet's lost weight; lines in good shape?

A: Mallett’s lost weight over 18 months. On lines, getting closer. Nice job in the weight room. One of the guys apparently did a back flip this week.

The 1970 game between Alabama and USC has been heralded by many (usually Trojan fans) as the contest which lead to the integration of Crimson Tide football. It's nonsense, of course, but that hasn't stopped that version of the story from spreading by West Coast revisionists.

One reasons Tennessee fans should be disappointed with this sloppy telling of history is that it almost completely discounts a historic game involving the Vols a year earlier.

In 1969, Lester McClain and Jackie Walker (pictured above) started in the Third Saturday in October game and broke the color line at Birmingham's Legion Field (a third black player, Andy Bennett, got into the game as well). Not only that, the Vols handed Bear Bryant's Tide team a 41-14 beatdown that afternoon.

I tell a bit of the tale at Roll Bama Roll today in my scathing review of a book about the 1970 Alabama vs. USC game, One Night, Two Teams.
