Q: Schedule w/ 12 straight games.

A: Just worked out that way; not that happy about it, but couldn’t be avoided.

Said the credit for the successful season in 2008 belongs to a lot of folks, and included the “head coach” in the list. Pretty good.

Q: Who did you vote for for QB? “Tebow,” "I don’t know if you’re going to be able to find the culprit who didn’t vote.

Q: What about FL?

A: They have a chance to be pretty good.

Q: How does a winning season and bowl game translate on recruiting trail?

A: “I sure hope so.” They have a lot to offer, top 20 school, great city, SEC, now add in success, it’s an outstanding product.

Q: How replace outgoing guys?

A: That’s just how it goes. D.J. was “one of the best natural players I’ve ever seen.” Tough to replace, but that’s the job of the coaches. Have some guys that are good left, and some ready to step in.

Q: How satisfying last season was?

A: Satisfying, but also necessary. Good way to test program to see if they’re making progress.

Q: SEC schedule.

A: “Is that right?” (Having to play LSU to begin).

Looking forward to it. There’s no easy way to schedule them. 12 in a row is the toughest thing to overcome. Also, some tough games in out of conference. Georgia Tech. Rice.

He makes another case for the ESPN contract helping in recruiting.

Now, parents of kids who are far from home can watch all the games on TV and don’t have to miss watching their son play.

Q: Did you anticipate a different level of respect here this year?

A: Tried a Rodney Dangerfield, laughed it off. That’s not what we’re seeking. Just try to continue to get better. Just not an automatic win anymore. Not that motivated by people patting him on the back. Like talking to players, fans after wins. That’s better.

btw, Arkanss radio stinks

I looked around for an Arky feed to see if they were covering the Hogs live, and all of the feeds require subscriptions.

What is this, the Tandy Ages?

Q: What did it meant to you personally last season?

A: Very gratifying to get to a bowl game and to win it.

(This is the same question for about the 4th time.)

If I were a coach, I'd love that.

Repeat questions mean that nothing tricky is coming up.

Q: New SEC coaches, expectations of fans (turnover)

A: Everybody’s impatient. Proud of Vandy for hanging in there with them. 10-year contract extension after three bad seasons.

It’s the way it goes in this league. A lot at stake. Everybody wants to win the championship. Can’t blame them for that.

“Nah” (that he’s still here).

Q: from TSK; taking program to next step, winning more comfortably.

A: That’s the way it’s been; heartbreakers, they’re used to them. It’ll probably be that way forever. They’ll have to perform at high level every week at Vandy. Vandy can’t overcome a bad week.

Over already?

The SEC feed was only 11 minutes.

Wow. They hate fans.

Huh.

the feed started well after you had started live-posting, and ended sooner.

Q: What's the next step for Vandy?

A: Maintain momentum. Do everything we can to have a chance to win games. Team must make sure they’re working hard, have their heads on right. The sky’s the limit for Vandy.

Q: Have you broadened your recruiting base at all? Winning any battles on that front?

A: Nationwide anyway, but we’re better known nationwide now, especially academically. And last year’s success has helped.

The 1970 game between Alabama and USC has been heralded by many (usually Trojan fans) as the contest which lead to the integration of Crimson Tide football. It's nonsense, of course, but that hasn't stopped that version of the story from spreading by West Coast revisionists.

One reasons Tennessee fans should be disappointed with this sloppy telling of history is that it almost completely discounts a historic game involving the Vols a year earlier.

In 1969, Lester McClain and Jackie Walker (pictured above) started in the Third Saturday in October game and broke the color line at Birmingham's Legion Field (a third black player, Andy Bennett, got into the game as well). Not only that, the Vols handed Bear Bryant's Tide team a 41-14 beatdown that afternoon.

I tell a bit of the tale at Roll Bama Roll today in my scathing review of a book about the 1970 Alabama vs. USC game, One Night, Two Teams.
