SEC Media Days live blog: the Ole Miss Rebels' Houston Nutt
Next up in today's frenzy of live-blogging at RTT is Houston Nutt of the Ole Miss Rebels. He's scheduled to start answering questions about expectations at 10:40 and to get really tired of the same question by 10:47.
There will also be an opportunity to talk with quarterback Jevan Snead and safety Kendrick Lewis.
As we've been doing all along, I'll be leaving my instant impressions in the comment thread below so that you don't have to refresh your browser for new comments and so you can respond to any particular statement in a nice, orderly threaded fashion.
See ya below.
Up next is Urban Meyer at 11:40.

I never saw that game for whatever reason
Did he get burned a whole bunch?
All I saw was tebow get stuffed on 4th down to seal it, but nothing that lead to that point.

He led to
two of our long touchdowns. One was an 80 yard pass where he was just outrun. The other was Dexter sprinting by him while Shay Hodge (our best WR) pancaked his ass.

Also, on Dexter's play
Brandon Spikes was out of position.

Of course he did.
Who else would he have voted for? Garcia?

Q: Win over FL last year and what it did for the team
A: Prior week, got beat by Vandy. We were down. We knew it would be tough going into Gainesville. That game gave us confidence that we could win. To see the locker room was awesome. Snead had his worst game right before FL. Then he was very good after that.

Very good after that...
We lost to South Carolina that next weekend. I don’t think the team really gelled until after beating Arky away and Auburn at home. Both things the Rebs hadn’t done in, oh, I dunno, forever.

Q: Tebow
A: What you love about him, not only does he makes promises, he carries it out. He has The Speech on his desk. Read it to the team once.

Q: Is there a rivalry between Tebow and Snead?
A: They’re both very good, but he wants Jevan to just be Jevan. Don’t want to get caught up in that.

Q: 1. How hard not to vote for Jevan. 2. Perception of better when expectatiosn are low.
A: 2. If you look at the times we’re picked high, we had some major injuries. Very worried about the crash for McCluster and Hardy. They’re very lucky. Not having those guys would have been horrible.

Does he mean Ole Miss or Arkansas? I guess both are true. Archie’s broken arm during his senior season comes to mind.

Q: What about the national polls?
A: Excited for the players because they’re handling it the right way.

Q: Is it ATL or bust this season?
A: It’s the toughest conference. Our staff has been to ATL twice; it’s a difficult journey. I wouldn’t say that.

Q: How much better will Jeavan be?
A: A year of experience. He handled himself well last year. Showed a lot of character.

Q: Secret to beating FL?
A: Respect Florida. We had three turnovers on them and protected it. Win the TO margin. Tebow et al will make plays. Limit them. It gives you a chance. Those are the two biggest factors.

Ask him
“I know that Dexter McCluster has meant a lot to your offense in the wild rebel formation. He’s graduating this season. What are you looking for in a replacement? Do you feel like you have a replacement on your team already?”

Q: Had McFadden, Snead will go through it this year. What can he teach Snead about that?
A: We’ve talked about it. There’s going to be attention. I just want Jevan to keep being Jevan. He’s very intelligent. He’s a “pleaser.” There’s going to be media, interviews, more demands on your time. Managing his time will be key. Keep priorities right.

Q: Schedule
A: Always tough when you go on the road (3 of first 4 away). It’s going to be loud, it’s all about how you handle it. You start at practice. The Memphis game will be the only one on TV that day.

Q: Cap on 28?
A: Was that because of my number. It’s got to be 25. Oversigned for a couple of reasons. There’s a lot of junior colleges in Mississippi. Knew 8 to 9 wouldn’t make it academically. When they sign, they’re in the Ole Miss family and they’re coming back. So there’s some incentive there. Also, just building relationships w/ junior college coaches. I wish it was at 30. We know we need to be at 25. Our numbers are going to work out.

Q: Difference between being hunter and hunted.
A: It’s different. Same group of experts picked us completely different this year. The great teams expect to be picked #1, and that’s where we want to get to. What goes with it, though, is that you have to work and play harder. It is different.

Q: How do you keep the confidence w/out being cocky?
A: We always talk about being humble. There’s going to be attention, so you don’t need to promote yourself. Don’t flinch. Just play hard and make plays and you’ll get attention.

Q: Does the wild rebel provide an opportunity to make the defense prepare differently?
A: Yes. Snead can launch from different areas, sprint out. It allows us to be very multiple. Snead threw for 2700 yards, and now we’ll be able to run.

I think it's that it's truly a wrinkle now
The offense is fine w/ Snead, and going to the Wild Rebel w/ McCluster forces defenses to prepare for two schemes instead of just one, and they can both work well.

Neither do I.
Now we’ll be able to run? Statistically, we had the 2nd best rushing attack in the league last season. That Houston Nutt, always so damned enigmatic.

But I’d think that he and Berry would arrive together, and if Berry was here, the whole place would be brighter, so I’m guessing . . . not yet.
