SEC Media Days live blog: the Auburn Tigers' Gene Chizik
We kick off today's live-blogging at RTT with Gene Chizik of the Auburn Tigers. He's scheduled to start answering questions about his record at Iowa State at 8:40 CST.
There will also be an opportunity to talk with defensive end Antonio Coleman and tight end Tommy Trott.
As we've been doing all along, I'll be leaving my instant impressions in the comment thread below so that you don't have to refresh your browser for new comments and so you can respond to any particular statement in a nice, orderly threaded fashion.
See ya below.
Up next is Steve Spurrier at 9:40.

Q: Coach, are you looking forward to the more laid-back atmosphere of SEC football after two whole years in the crucible of Ames, IA?

They should have given us all credentials
or not… :-D

Excited to be back at Auburn
Was undefeated in 2004 last time he was there, so it’s a great memory.

everybody's excited these days
Is there a new, genetically-engineered super coffee out there that they’re trial testing on SEC coaches?

I was hoping my theory was correct.
Cause I’d like to order some.

In all fairness, we UT fans don't have a whole lot of leverage to dig at Chizik yet.
I firmly believe Kiffin has the better chance of success, but we still have to wait and see how it goes for a while first. Kinda like Spurrier trash-talking only after he crushed everybody.
Maybe not a "whole lot" of leverage...
… but Kiffin hasn’t failed at the college level yet.
Lou Brock loves Lamp.
true
and the whole ‘position coach for Heisman winnar’ thing helps
by David Hooper on Jul 24, 2009 9:48 AM EDT up reply actions
I suppose a comparison can be made...
… if you assume the chances for success are the same in Ames as they are in Oakland, but I don’t think they are.
Lou Brock loves Lamp.
I don't know.
Iowa State in the B-12 v. Al Davis. Toughie.

Iowa State
vs. a down Nebraska and a down Colorado. It’s still a bad situation.
(but yes, I do agree with your premise. just teasing out the other side of the coin. the broken, burnt, wooden nickel of a coin.)

Q: Given the expectations, feel pressure to succeed immediately?
A: Pressure everywhere in this job. Don’t pay much attention to the externals. We put pressure on ourselves, and that’s enough.

pressure on ourselves...
I did that once, on my hand using a table vice. It left grip marks for the rest of the day.

Q: Vote for Tebow?
A: I don’t like discussing who we voted for, whether teams or people. Don’t want to open himself up to have to answer always, but yes, he voted for Tebow. He’s a great QB.

The Masked Voter!
I see a comic book out of this. Journos would buy it by the boxload.

"I don't like discussing who we voted for."
Translation: He’s actually a convicted felon and thus wasn’t allowed to vote. Mystery solved.
Lou Brock loves Lamp.
I don't like the discussion either.
I personally don’t do things anonymously and firmly believe in standing beside my word. But I understand how it can make a difference and I hate forcing revelation on others.

Q: Gus Malzahn? And QBs?
A: Wanted to make sure we were on the same page philosophically. Feel very strongly about running the football. Wanted to know what kind of spread Malzahn runs. Had many extensive conversations. They averaged 270 yards rushing last year. Also want a balanced passing attack. Gus has that balance. We’re on the same page.
Re: QBs — unique situation. Some older guys. Some young guys. Would like to get it resolved. How long will it take? We don’t know.

Q: There are billboards up to whip up interest in Auburn. Has Auburn football stumbled a bit?
A: I don’t know what public opinion is. My opinion is that Auburn’s a great place. Everything we do will be to promote Auburn and do what’s in the best interest of Auburn.

Q: Compare Big 12 and SEC.
A: Arguably the two best conferences in the country. Big 12 has made leaps and bounds. Just one man’s opinion. Talent level at SEC is incredible. Great players, great coaches. Interest is at an all-time high. Just look around, look at the interest. I think the SEC is the best. The Big 12 is great.

A: The fans are great. He’s been here before.
Blah, blah, blah.

Q: Re 2004, feel any need to keep any of the staff that was there?
A: You have to do what you think is best for the program. I used my best discernment on which to keep and which I had to reluctantly let go. Wanted to put together the best staff in the country. We’ll always strive to get back to the point we were in 2004.

Q: Some coaches feel the need to bring attention to themselves. Choice, personality, don't think you need that?
A: I get plenty of attention when I go home with three children and a wife. When you win, you’ll get attention. This isn’t about me. This is about Auburn. I don’t care to draw a lot of attention to myself. It’s just who I am.

Q: Were you ever interested in the UCF job?
A: I really don’t live in the past to be honest with you. I feel like my steps have been ordered. I’m not trying to be flippant, that’s just the way I operate. I know there’s a bigger plan for my life. Obviously that’s not one of the places I was supposed to be coach of.

A: I think it’s great. I think it’s great. These guys sacrifice a lot.

Q: Coach, tell us about the adjustment moving from a major metroplis like Ames, IA to the tiny village of Auburn.

A: Beats the hell outta Starkville! [everybody in room cracks up except for Starkville journalists, who glare angrily]
