SEC Media Days live blog: the South Carolina Gamecocks' Steve Spurrier
Next up in today's live-blogging at RTT is Steve Spurrier of the South Carolina Gamecocks. He's scheduled to start at 9:40 CST. This one should be especially interesting due to the breaking news that Spurrier's the culprit.
There will also be an opportunity to talk with wide receiver Moe Brown and linebacker Eric Norwood.
As we've been doing all along, I'll be leaving my instant impressions in the comment thread below so that you don't have to refresh your browser for new comments and so you can respond to any particular statement in a nice, orderly threaded fashion.
See ya below.
Up next is Les Miles at 10:40.

This part of the Chris Low story will be his explanation:
“However, SEC associate commissioner Charles Bloom confirmed to ESPN.com that Spurrier called within the past 24 hours and asked that his ballot be changed to include Tebow as the first-team quarterback. Spurrier told Bloom that his initial ballot, with Snead as the first-team quarterback, was a mistake.”
And he’ll probably decline comment beyond that. Spurrier has been effusive in his praise of Tebow in the past.
Lou Brock loves Lamp.
Theres another article floating around saying that he had someone fill it out for them, that person saw too Florida players, and so bumped Tebow off.
Because, you know, the first Florida player that should be bumped from first-team is Tebow. /bs

Wasnt he also the guy that once voted his buddy's team in the top 25 one year?
Spurrier could really care less about these preseason teams and such. Wish everyone else would take this stuff as seriously as he did.
I think so.
He also has a habit of hyping up the teams he’s going to play.

over/under on non-fluff questions they ask spurrier
(questions involving tebow don’t count)
I’m saying 1 because I feel generous.
Maybe it will warm up some, still early in the AM and Chizik is a snooze-fest

Spurrier's up
Looking forward to the season.
Tebow: didn’t do much voting at all. Some coach was careless or dumb, initial thought. He signed off on the thing. Surely, we had Tebow. Actually, Snead. We already had 10 Gators. I said no, no, no. That’s my fault. We screwed it up pretty badly. I’m embarrassed. I feel bad. Apologized to Tebow. Called Bloom. It is now unanimous.

He and Wuerffel will go down as the two best QBs to play college football. I apologize to him. I missed up. I tried to correct. I take full blame. And that’s the way it happened. We’ll try to move on. I still feel very badly.

Kiffin brought his ballot
According to VQ, Kiffin brought his ballot to show that he voted for Tebow. Really unfortunate that he didn’t get to whip the ballot out mid press conference
I'd pay him to make a paper airplane out of it and throw it at the media.
It’s worth $10 to him now.

Q: ballot miscommunication a symptom of a problem; having someone else do it?
A: I’ve never filled a preseason ballot out in 17 years. I do look at it. Yeah, I don’t know why we vote. Because we still don’t have a playoff system. Most coaches don’t know a lot about other teams. They ask us to vote. We try to do the best we can. I don’t know the answer.

A: We haven’t discussed that yet. I’ll still have the title of HC and OC. Others will chip in. The main guy in charge, we haven’t formulized yet. (nice word)

Q: Concerned about how Gator fans will react?
A: I’m embarrassed, again. I had no reason to slight Tim Tebow. I feel badly about it. I didn’t sleep worth a dang last night. It’s history. I’m trying to correct it. I got in touch with Charlie. He changed it. Snead’s very good, too. But Tebow should have been there.

Q: Talk about improvement in running game in the spring.
A: Was a little bit better. Had nowhere to go but up. How’d we win seven games? Our defense played very well. Had maybe three good offensive games. We need to run better; did so in spring. Hopefully can do it during season.

Q: Comfortable with Garcia? And what about Gilmore?
A: Gilmore is a tremendous player/athlete. He’s an NFL corner, but can run the shotgun offense. We’ll continue to try to get the ball in his hands.
(forgot about Garcia)

Q: Tebow's pro career.
A: He’ll be an excellent NFL QB if the team does what he does well. Titans didn’t do it w/ Vince Young. If they spread out and give him an opportunity to run and throw, nobody does it better than him.

Q: Re: public statements by newcomers. Should they win a few games first?
A: Looking back there are some things I wish I wouldn’t have said. When you’re winning you can do that. When you’re 7-6 you don’t have much to say. I’m not criticizing the coach who’s doing that. We all try to let our teams do the talking for you as a coach.
