SEC Media Days live blog: the LSU Tigers' Les Miles

We continue today's frenzied live-blogging at RTT with Les Miles of the LSU Tigers. He's scheduled to start saying whatever pops into his head at 10:40 CST.

Miles is also bringing offensive tackle Ciron Black and linebacker Jacob Cutrera.

As we've been doing all along, I'll be leaving my instant impressions in the comment thread below so that you don't have to refresh your browser for new comments and so you can respond to any particular statement in a nice, orderly threaded fashion.

See ya below.

Up next is our very own Lane Kiffin at 11:40.

Its only fair.

Now that we’ve wasted everyone elses time, might as well make it equal (except for Spurrier, all of his time should be wasted for his Judas move)

Besides, would it be fair to learn something interesting about LSU

when we didn’t bother learning anything about any other school?

I may have to check out for a bit.

The one time they actually require my presence today. I have no idea how I’ll weasel out to catch the Kiffin fireworks.

Aargh.

I actually dont expect any Qs about Kiffin aimed to Les

Hes one of the few top-dogs in the SEC that Kiffin hasn’t really slighted.

But if they do, it just means Kiffin has really made an impact into the SEC-psyche

Joel, I have $20 for you,

If you can cobble together a question for Les that includes:

Tim Tebow
Erin Andrews
Lane Kiffin
Layla Kiffin
virginity

And I’m sure others would toss money into that extra tall hat…

by David Hooper on Jul 24, 2009 11:48 AM EDT reply actions

Doug from Hey Jenny Slater had the answer to the virginity question

Les: Virgin! I’m not a virgin today!

I’ll add: “And it’s only 10:49 a.m.!”

Summer’s over. The Miles family played youth sports and swam, put our feet in the sand, reacquainted with four children.

Rambling on about the team

New staff: Chavis. Comfortable with a dominant defense. Good fit for LSU. They’re off to a good start.

Re: Tebow

I certainly did. He’s always had great games against us. I like who he is. I’m going to hold my QBs to that level of play. He obviously hasn’t heard about Spurrier.

Officials

We have great officiating. But it’s a tough role, and I think it tends to be over-officiated.

Q: Was it a shock to the system for the kids not to have won 11 games last year?

A: Our guys understand it. We have a certain standard. You never expect that. Not at LSU. Our team has prepared in earnest. It will be seen this fall.

Q: Defense, Chavis.

A: Not a lot different from Pellini. You’ll find it’s the same. Also similar is the desire. There are some differences, based on personnel.

Q: Do you fill out your own ballot in the coaches poll?

A: I do it in conjunction with someone else. It’s a responsbiility for the school to do it well and right.

Q: Jordan Jefferson. Impressive last year. What's he doing to get better?

A: Bigger, stronger. He’s had a great summer. He’s run our 7 on 7s a couple nights a week. Both he and Jarrett Lee.

Q: Ciron Black; Your impressions of him and his intelligence, thoughtfulness.

A: Very talented man. Not only athletically, but he’s intuitive and has an understanding of what’s going on. It’s fun to see a guy grow, where he came from and where he’s going. He’ll be a great rep for LSU for years to come.

Q: QB struggles last year, inexperience?

A: When you put a young one on the line of scrimmage and have trained him, . . .

There’s nothing better than experience to learn the things they need to know.

Q: Any benefit from time spent in Oklahoma (watching LSU players win the college world series)

A: Been fortunate to have guys who have played multiple sports, including Holliday now. If a p layer has an interest in a spring sport, we can offer that. There comes a time to focus on football. The academic load on student athletes is greater. It’s tough. But in society, we want more. So desire to have those experiences (watching players play baseball). I enjoyed it.

Q: How hard to keep a staff in the midst of bidding wars?

A: Fortunate to live in a country where market value is a good thing. It’s good that assistant coaches salaries are rising. It’s a tough time in the economy now. It’s good they can make a great living. Our country is based on the pursuit of excellence. If he’s doing a great job, he’s deserving.

Q: Depth on offensive line. Russell Shepard.

A: Five starters, should be a great o-line. Behind them are many in a position to compete. We’ll have enough.

A: There’s a challenge to our offense on how to use Sheppard. Very bright. Understands secondaries. Knows where the ball is supposed to go. He can run, too, as the third option if everyone’s covered.

Q: Holliday (could focus on track)

A: I’ve told him that I believe he’s a football player. Doesn’t shy from contact. Specific skills. I think he’ll have a great fall. We’ll run him from the backfield a bit more. He loves the idea that he’s not big and can serve as a role model for kids who don’t have the typical physique.

Q: Having staffers do the coaches poll, is that right, considering it's importance?

A: You have to have a staffer or an assistant coach, but you need to review them. Overall, it’s doing a good job. I am for playoffs, but presidents bring up their priorities, and TV does, too, and the calendar for the student athletes gets changed, and it gets complicated. I’m not going to complain. The system has its advantages.

Q: Influence of Chavis?

A: John has great experience. Understands the desire for defense. Really looking for that. He’ll expect, his guys will deliver. STrategies behind call, effort and technique will be improved.

Q: What went wrong the 2nd half of the season?

A: Turnovers over a series of games is a huge statistic. TOP, rushing yardage, secondary to TO margin. Need both sides to focus on minimizing any disadvantage there.
