Rivals #7 WR Markeith Ambles Commits to Tennessee

We're back to good recruiting news (thanks to Rusty and VolBrian for linking the news here), and there's a lot to like here (including just the kid's name alone).  Markeith Ambles of McDonough, Georgia has committed to the Vols for 2010, giving the class a big boost as the Vols continue to search for a quarterback.

Ambles is 6'2", 182 lbs and caught 53 passes for 933 yards as a junior last season, and was recruited by Lance Thompson, who helped the Vols pull him away from Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Florida State and others.  He's a four-star player according to Rivals, who has him listed as the 7th best WR prospect in the nation.  Ambles is the first WR commitment of the 2010 class, and will become the Vols' highest rated commitment on the board.  Under Kiffin's administration, the Vols have done incredibly well with offensive skill players, and Ambles name is a fine addition to the list that already includes Bryce Brown, David Oku and Nu'Keese Richardson.  Good times are ahead for this offense, quarterbacks of the future...

UPDATE:  Check out some great quotes from Mark Farrell's story at Rivals' main site ($):

"I'm going to recruit for my team now," he said. "They think I can help with bringing in a quarterback and I think I can help that as well. I'm going to start making some calls right away and I need to get myself a Tennessee hat now and wear it wherever I go. I'm a Vol now."

Check out Ambles' profile at Rivals here.  VolQuest has more info on Ambles' commitment ($), including quotes.  Hooper's got you covered on the soon-to-be-updated Recruiting Map.

UPDATE:  The Recruiting Map is now updated.  I didn't mention it earlier, but you can always download the Google Earth application for Tennessee Recruiting in 3-D!  -hooper

Living in Alabama is like living 50 years in the past, they are still just as racist, just as educated, the state constitution forbids any kind of public transportation, and all they can talk about is Bear Bryant

I think we're just running Paul Johnson's offense with Ambles at B-back until I hear otherwise.

Gerald Jones still has two years of eligibility, right?

Eric Berry for sending the guy who wins the Heisman spinning 720 degrees in the air at the podium - or for intercepting it and returning it to where it rightfully belongs

Amble to the phone and call Scroggins Markeith.

The 1970 game between Alabama and USC has been heralded by many (usually Trojan fans) as the contest which lead to the integration of Crimson Tide football. It's nonsense, of course, but that hasn't stopped that version of the story from spreading by West Coast revisionists.

One reasons Tennessee fans should be disappointed with this sloppy telling of history is that it almost completely discounts a historic game involving the Vols a year earlier.

In 1969, Lester McClain and Jackie Walker (pictured above) started in the Third Saturday in October game and broke the color line at Birmingham's Legion Field (a third black player, Andy Bennett, got into the game as well). Not only that, the Vols handed Bear Bryant's Tide team a 41-14 beatdown that afternoon.

I tell a bit of the tale at Roll Bama Roll today in my scathing review of a book about the 1970 Alabama vs. USC game, One Night, Two Teams.
