Around the SB Nation: Calipari can have success with the DDM his first year
- A Sea of Blue says that history suggests that John Calipari can and will install his dribble drive motion offense in his first year at Kentucky.
- Team Speed Kills speculates on what killed the Florida-Utah game that almost was and proves that defense wins championships.
- Gobbler Country says that Virginia Tech must beat Alabama for several reasons, including the fact that the Hokies have to atone for (1) a lopsided loss to LSU and (2) Clemson's loss to Alabama last season.
- Maize N Brew is not a fan of the idea of Michigan playing three QBs in its season opener.

VT/Bama
The last paragraph of the Gobbler Country article (which is a great site) puts into words the attitude that exists in and around Blacksburg toward the SEC better than anywhere I’ve ever read.
And in 11 days, the SEC is going to make Tech worship at its altar again.

The comments section is gold as well.
There may not be any other conference with such a well developed inferiority complex re: the SEC out there.

Why should the ACC feel inferior to anyone
before November? It’s only preseason anyway.
Eric Berry for sending the guy who wins the Heisman spinning 720 degrees in the air at the podium - or for intercepting it and returning it to where it rightfully belongs

The inferiority complex was clear as day
It was sort of sad, really. Worse than you would get even from Big 10 fans.

An implicit admission of the begrudgin respect for the SEC:
The Hokies got some of their pride back by winning the Orange Bowl. But beating Bama would be bigger.
In context, it’s inclusive of the SEC alpha-rolling VTech and Clemson recently. But to say that beating a solid SEC team in week 1 is a bigger deal than beating the Big East conference champion in a BCS bowl is to say that Alabama’s mere preseason reputation is greater than anything the Big East can offer. Forget depth concerns about the Big East; we’re only talking about their number one team.

It's more than that.
Beating Cincy – at that point in time – didn’t really affirm anything. With a win over ‘Bama, VT can put itself squarely in the running for the national title game, even at 11-1 – think of it like a poor man’s Big 10 argument. (Or how Ohio State backed into the title game in ‘07 – I never said it’d be glorious.) It’s the timing of the win that matters.

What I don't get ...
Hogue said the rioters were “throwing jack irons, throwing tire irons, anything they could get their hands on.” Some people carried baseball bats and brooms.
outside a small-town city hall, with up to 150 screaming people hurling tire irons and wielding baseball bats.
Eight people were arrested, and at least four were hurt
- Why were there tire irons and jack irons outside the city hall?
- Why, after 150 people fighting, were only 4 hurt?

Oh, and another thing.
From the Sea of Blue article:
Coach Cal, who totally understands the value of brand, marketing, and selling the program, has been working hard trying to build the Kentucky brand back up to the extent that is possible in the off season.
So what exactly will the Kentucky brand be worth when Calipari takes another midnight run leaving behind a program under NCAA investigation?

Sort of like the used car guy
you liked him and the car OK when you were buying it,
but then you had it for a year and created a whole new set of words especially designed for his slickness and the clunker you now hate.

We should make sure all the current Kentucky fawning is archived
So we can spend about a decade rubbing their noses in it afterward.
In the meantime, I look at it as an opportunity for CBP to show how much better he is than Calipari twice a year instead of just once.
