Tennessee Volunteers lose 13-23 to Florida Gators

Yes, that headline is phrased awkwardly, but it somehow seems appropriate. With the spread at four TDs and most of the national media calling for Urban Meyer to unleash a cruel comeuppance on the idiot Lane Kiffin who can't possibly know what he's doing, yes, a ten point loss with the Vols still in it in the last several minutes is cause for turning the news on its head.

I have to take care of a few things -- should only take a minute -- but then I'll be back to post the immediate post-game ramblings before I retire for the evening to actually enjoy watching some other teams. Meanwhile, use this as the post-game discussion thread because we're nearly blowing the place up with 1700 comments among the two game threads.

See ya in a few!

Our offense’s inability to move the ball in the 3rd Quarter killed us.

I got punk'd by UT's Athletic Department.

How about our inability to stop tebow run in the third?

Yeah we needed to be able to move the ball and not punt in the third, but our offense played about as good of as a game as they can. Defense fought well, just needed a few more 3rd downs to go our way.

I usually go to VT's Thursday night home games

saw them stun Clemson in ‘06 and saw Darren Evans run for 253 vs Maryland last year…this year it’s UNC in late October. It’s a great environment for what it is.

I'd love to go.

That will hopefully be a great matchup.

Think about it

1. Gerald Jones doesn’t step out of bounds.
2. Rico McCoy actually hits Tebow on 3rd down.

The game is 17-16 and the VOLS win. Now, Florida certainly wasn’t mistake free and can also play the “what if?” game, but the fact that we can really says something about the way our guys played today.

Also, I’d like to point out that the 3rd quarter has been our nemesis through three games.

1st, 2nd, 4th: 84-23 UT
3rd: 26-7 BAD GUYS

Now, we can also take out the WKU game to get us back to scale:

1st, 2nd, 4th: 28-23 UT
3rd: 19-0 BAD GUYS

The adjustments immediately out of the locker room look to be our weak point right now. The staff seems to be doing everything else right.

I don't mind deferring

If we’re doing this badly when we start out on offense, I’d rather have it at the beginning of the 3rd than have it be the tone-setter for the entire game.

I feel like we've been coming a bit slow out of the gates in the third

We're adjusting pretty well as we get into the second half

But not out of the gates. I think I’m agreeing with you. But we seem to have about a 10 minute slump before we re-adjust and get things going. Without that slump, we’re 2-0 and playing OT right now.

Not nearly bad enough to sit him next week, not amazing where you know he will be starting for the rest of the year. But I think he stays for the rest of year if he performs as middle of the road in following games as he did today.

I still think TCU was the best non-BCS team last year

And I’m a little disappointed they didn’t get their shot (at a BCS bowl, not at a title game).

Boise State humiliated Oregon and has an easy path through the WAC. Expect to see them back in a BCS bowl, and they’ll probably deserve it. They probably won’t win though (unless it’s against the Big East rep).

Houston has the signature win over Okie State, but I don’t think they’ll make it through this season.

A friend of mine goes to Florida

working on her PhD. The students got this email this week

Date: Sept. 17, 2009

To: UF Students

From: Student Body President Jordan Johnson

Vice President of Student Affairs Patricia Telles-Irvin

Re: Florida-Tennessee Football Game

The University of Tennessee is one of our great school rivalries, and the
Florida-Tennessee football match-up is one we eagerly await each year. The
longstanding tradition wouldn’t be what it is today if it weren’t for the
mutual respect and the on-field talent upon which these two schools pride
themselves.

As we cheer on the Gators this weekend, we all need to remember we
represent the Gator Nation. Let’s show the Volunteers what that means by
treating our guests with courtesy and respect when you see them in our
area restaurants as well as in and around Ben Hill Griffin Stadium on
Saturday.

We want the Tennessee players and fans to recall Gainesville as a place
where they faced a determined opponent with friendly, supportive fans.

We’re proud of the successes Urban Meyer and the UF football team have had
in recent years and we wish them the best for the remainder of the season.

Have fun and go Gators!

I felt comfortable with the punts as well.

Only a 40-yard average, but they were high rather than deep, and I never thought they’d be blocked.

Good

I am actively rooting against Dave Clawson for the rest of his career

Raise your hand if you foresaw this in the third quarter

Ryan Mallet 15 of 22, 319 yards, 4 TDs
Joe Cox 13 of 18, 248 yards, 3 TDs

by Will Shelton on Sep 19, 2009 10:21 PM EDT reply actions

I may be starting to revise my opinion of J. Cox

Jury’s still out. I think he’s probably the weakest QB they’ve had in a long while, but somehow he’s racking up big numbers and slim wins.

The SBN techies are putting up temporary measures to control the spam attack. Don’t make more than 10 comments in a minute. (Not that any of you ever have before, but trust me on this one. At least for a day or so.)

We now resume our regularly scheduled blogging…

Is that why

theres a considerable delay in posting comments?

by danmarcel on Sep 19, 2009 10:28 PM EDT up reply actions

perhaps.

RTT is getting off lightly; some sights have been seeing far more spam hits. But I think that institution the higher checks make the network work harder.

It should clear soon; spam attacks rarely last for any extended periods.

How little faith do you have in your defense

if you still go for two from the 8 yard line?

Not that it matters, cause Arkansas can’t play defense either

I hate both teams

I wish a black hole would open up and swallow the whole stadium

by ChattVol on Sep 19, 2009 10:37 PM EDT reply actions

Crompton is going to have to get better

because people will put progressively more defenders in the box to stop the run as the season goes on. Culminating in Alabama putting 12 men in the box, because they cheat.

Quote from Meyer
“I think there’s so much pressure on this team to perform perfectly, which is good,” Meyer said. “I’d rather be on that end than on, ‘Boy, great job. We lost by 10.’ I don’t want to do that. There’s a lot of pressure on these guys and I felt it in there.”

So, will the media replay that little quote 1,000 times between now and next September?

by danmarcel on Sep 19, 2009 10:57 PM EDT reply actions

he throws it 10 rows into the stands. LEAVE NO DOUBT.

So I went back and looked at the box score for FSU/BYU

Total yards was almost even. But the turnover battle. . .

5-0

That’s your game right there. And that’s why you won’t find me dropping BYU as far as some others may. They’re still a top 20 team, very possibly top 15.

The 1970 game between Alabama and USC has been heralded by many (usually Trojan fans) as the contest which lead to the integration of Crimson Tide football. It's nonsense, of course, but that hasn't stopped that version of the story from spreading by West Coast revisionists.

One reasons Tennessee fans should be disappointed with this sloppy telling of history is that it almost completely discounts a historic game involving the Vols a year earlier.

In 1969, Lester McClain and Jackie Walker (pictured above) started in the Third Saturday in October game and broke the color line at Birmingham's Legion Field (a third black player, Andy Bennett, got into the game as well). Not only that, the Vols handed Bear Bryant's Tide team a 41-14 beatdown that afternoon.

I tell a bit of the tale at Roll Bama Roll today in my scathing review of a book about the 1970 Alabama vs. USC game, One Night, Two Teams.
