Around the SB Nation: more of last night, more of tomorrow
- Team Speed Kills is torn on the question of whether South Carolina's 16-10 victory over Ole Miss last night should be considered a signature win. South Carolina blog Garnet and Black Attack appears to consider it so, vomiting up a list of post-victory discussion topics. Ole Miss blog Red Cup Rebellion, on the other hand, is left wondering whether the Rebels' "fate may have been sealed by complacency and mediocrity that started before most of us were born." (strong language alert). Meanwhile, the Gamecocks' big win has Georgia fans feeling better about their offense and worse about their defense today than they were yesterday.
- Gobbler Country's simulation of tomorrow's Virginia Tech-Miami game has the Hokies winning 34-28 in double overtime. If the game's a blowout one way or the other, I'm asking him for the tape of the sim.
- Roll Bama Roll and Arkansas Expats exchange Q&As in advance of tomorrow's game between the Crimson Tide and the Razorbacks.
- A Sea of Blue's
TruAnythingButGatorade lifts the lid on the Tupperware containing a statistical comparison of Kentucky and Florida and doesn't like the smell. Team Speed Kills has a more positive take, noting Kentucky playmakers Randall Cobb and Derrick Locke. - Hail to the Orange attempts to make the case for an Illini upset over Ohio State.
- Tomahawk Nation is happy to report that the pundits are beginning to restrain themselves from making sweeping judgments about a program after only three games.

"Signature win"
As the game ended last night, my wife asked me if this was the biggest win of Spurrier’s Carolina career. I told her obviously it was the highest-ranked team he had beaten while there, but I doubted it was his “biggest” win. Beating the Gators in Gainesville has to be bigger, right?

Yep
Also bigger, methinks, were the wins over Georgia and Kentucky in 2007

I would say yes to the Gainsville win being bigger
Ole Miss was ranked #4, but its just because of preseason perceptions.. not because they had beaten anybody, or proven they were good. It was a good win, a big win for USC, but the ‘05 win over the Gators I would call bigger, particularly since it was Spurrier’s return to the swamp. Florida wasn’t top notch that year, but they were still Florida.
As far as we’re concerned, the Ole Miss game looks very winnable at this point, as do Auburn and Georgia (who have survived shootouts, which our defense should be able to prevent). Notice I say “winnable”, not that we will win easily or anything.
Agreed
The only game that doesn’t look “winnable” to me right now is Bama. We really could win all of the others. We could also lose them, which is what makes this offense so exciting.
Wait, I don’t think “exciting” is the word I was looking for. Depressing?

Good catch.
South Carolina … Auburn … they’re so easily confused. ;-)

Was it? I thought he beat them in Gainesville...
But I guess you would know better than I.

Believe me, I was at that game. A miserable night in South Carolina if there ever was one.

AnythingButGatorade wrote the piece over at A Sea of Blue, not me. I’m not qualified to write a piece like that. Plus, the pic of the gator trying to come in the door would have terrified me. :-)

Well, that extra "r" wasn't really necessary ...

Re: UK v UF
Local newspaper Lexington Herald-Leader is running a poll on their site:
Who is the greatest player ever to play against Kentucky in Commonwealth Stadium?
Shaun Alexander, Alabama 2%
Bo Jackson, Auburn 17%
Eli Manning, Mississippi 1%
Peyton Manning, Tennessee 29%
Emmitt Smith, Florida 9%
Tim Tebow, Florida 10%
Herschel Walker, Georgia 27%
Reggie White, Tennessee 3%
Danny Wuerffel, Florida 1%
Total Votes: 4151
So Manning leads Walker 29% – 27%, with Tebow getting a scant 10%

Normally I wouldn't recommend the Red Cup Rebellion
because the language really is very off-color and below the standards of the SBNation but it does poignantly capture the degree of disappointment when the vastly overrated team and its overly optimistic fan base run headlong into the reality that they are just not that great.
The offensive tackle’s comment sounds awfully similar to Crompton’s positive-speak
it’s just part of the gameafter throwing multiple interceptions against UCLA. Their guy said .
“I’m glad it’s gone,” left tackle Bradley Sowell said of the high-intensity spotlight, “so we can just get back to basics and win ballgames.”A top-notch player welcomes the pressure and a top-notch quarterback expresses regret that he screwed up…
Red Cup Rebellion
Sounds like the Ole Miss guys need to have a little chat with their therapist. Or somebody. Blaming Thursday’s loss on a previous era’s lack of will to win seems like a cop out. Maybe they need to ask some of the 1969, 1970’s Rebels if they wanted to win badly enough?
