ESPN GameDay and early games open thread

ESPN College GameDay is at Penn State for tonight's game against Iowa despite the fact that, as Will mentioned last night, Miami at Virginia Tech is the week's only game featuring two Top 25 teams. Couldn't they just take a picture of the white out and bring it with them to Blacksburg?

Anyway, leave your comments on GameDay (show starts at 10:00 EST) or on the afternoon games here. The Guessing Game questions and the Tennessee-Ohio game thread will be up a bit later.

Well, at least ESPN is transparent in their self-serving nature.

/rolls eyes.

I can’t imagine that anybody outside of local rooting interests will care about PSU-Iowa other than that it’s a football game and it’s on TV.

Usually I agree...

… but both of those games are on ABC, so I don’t see how going to Penn State serves themselves any more than going to Blacksburg would.

There's more to gain by promoting the PSU game.

The evening slate is mostly uninteresting, with only the Kentucky / Florida game (and maybe the Arizona St. / Georgia game) serving as national-interest competition. Putting GameDay at PSU can turn the game into a near-monopoly on national TV sets.

Tebow and others on a separate plane to Lexington

Superman is quarantined…this is all brand new for the Gators. I’m least rational on gameday, but I think UK’s got a real chance…

Hmm.

Is this because we pooh-poohed the flu excuse last week?

What early game is of your greatest interest?

I’m torn b/w UNC/GaTech and Fresno / Cincy. I think I’m going with Cincy, though, because Pike is the kind of qb that Bray projects to be like.

That, and the ‘Snail would never forgive me if I didn’. ;-)

by David Hooper on Sep 26, 2009 12:17 PM EDT reply actions

Observation:

Cincy’s nose tackle (Brandon Mills, #58) is 5’-11" and 265 lbs. That has to be the smallest NT I’ve heard of in the modern era. Just a freshman and played on the first drive, so the coaches must see something they like. I’m guessing they like the fact that an offensive lineman’s kneecaps are ill-suited for blocking.

by David Hooper on Sep 26, 2009 12:25 PM EDT up reply actions

Early observation:

If you don’t watch the Cincy game today, watch the replay on ’360 (if you can) at some point. That Pike kid has some really nice touch.

Also, Cincy wore white unis at home (presumably corresponding with the obligatory black white out).

LSU messes up on a punt

State ball at the one, LSU looks very mediocre.

by Getoffmyvols on Sep 26, 2009 1:02 PM EDT reply actions

Their defense is keeping them in it, though.

I do think that, in the long term, LSU will be happy with Chavis. If they can get used to the more conservative playcalling.

by David Hooper on Sep 26, 2009 1:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Aaand LSU intercepts the ball deep downfield on 4th down.

Not criticizing the kid, but batting the freebie down would have been better.

by David Hooper on Sep 26, 2009 1:45 PM EDT up reply actions

I take back everything I said about. . .

South Florida and Florida State. I will give myself credit on LSU though.

by Incipient_Senescence on Sep 26, 2009 3:25 PM EDT reply actions

Without their decade-long starting QB, nobody could be sure of USF.

Pulling them from the ballot was fair until was had better information. This is better information.

Oh, and BYU feels really silly.

Re: LSU

Are you beginning to get the feeling that this year is a very good year to have Orgeron on staff? Given the sheer number of linemen they grow down there and the seeming trend towards two off years in a row for the Tigers, UT stands a real chance of reclaiming the Gulf (relatively speaking).

by David Hooper on Sep 26, 2009 3:31 PM EDT up reply actions

(I should amend that to include Frank Wilson. Technically, he’s in charge of Bayou ’cruiting.)

by David Hooper on Sep 26, 2009 3:33 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm thinking that behind UF and Bammer

The SEC is absolutely wide open right now. Anyone, and I mean anyone, can step up and be the #3 team. Well, maybe I’ll make exceptions for Vandy and MSU. I don’t know if we’ll finish in that #3 spot this year (although it’s certainly possible; we’re not really in worse shape than Auburn, Georgia, Ole Miss, South Carolina. . . ), but I think Kiffin might be the man to make us the team that comes out of that pack and steps back up to the top. Somebody has to.

by Incipient_Senescence on Sep 26, 2009 3:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Agreed.

Though I’m going to label this as a down year for the SEC. I’m still not sold on Auburn quite yet, though it’s hard to argue with the results so far. But LSU has some significant problems, MSU is game for seemingly every game, Georgia has defensive issues, and South Carolina is extremely inconsistent.

Unless Kentucky beats Florida and proves to be the Kentucky that hasn’t existed in over 50 years, UT has a real shot if they can get their act together on offense.

by David Hooper on Sep 26, 2009 3:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Oh, it's absolutely a down year for the conference

Which is good for us this year. Usually, we want a strong SEC, but this year, we’re down, so a down SEC gives us a chance to still make some noise. Really, I think that there are eight teams that are almost interchangeable from #3-#10. I’d lean towards putting USC in the #3 spot right now, loss in Athens notwithstanding. But anyone can take it. Us, Aubie, Georgia, LSU, Arky, Kentucky, Ole Miss. MSU is #11 and Vandy is alone at the bottom.

Indiana just got hosed.

Terrible call on the field, and even worse review that confirmed it. Just stupid.

Never Again. Retire #8 NOW!

by wvvol on Sep 26, 2009 3:25 PM EDT reply actions

Horribly bogus call in Michigan's favor.

Simultaneous catches are supposed to be ruled in favor of the offense. Possession didn’t belong to the defender until after the play was dead.

by David Hooper on Sep 26, 2009 3:25 PM EDT reply actions

I can't see how any call could be worse that this one.

No one else in America thought that was a turnover. Only the dumb—- official who threw his shoulder out signalling the turnover, and then Jim Delany in the review booth at the stadium.

Never Again. Retire #8 NOW!

Maybe I'm alone

But I find TCU/Clemson the most intriguing matchup of all the 3:30 set. I’m afraid Miami may torch VT. But TCU has a chance to legitimize themselves as a possible BCS-buster, and I think they succeed. We shall see.

by Incipient_Senescence on Sep 26, 2009 4:00 PM EDT reply actions

I think it's a good one.

That, and the VTech/Miami game is blacked out on 360 for Knoxville. Which I find very, very odd.

by David Hooper on Sep 26, 2009 4:03 PM EDT up reply actions

It's blacked out for the entire East Coast

Check the ABC local listings. If they’re showing your game, you’re blacked out. This means everyone is blacked out who isn’t in the Cal/Oregon or Illinois/Ohio State region. I’m not getting it here in Boston.

Random question:

Have any of you ever gone to the UT viewing parties that the alumni association sets up?

I’m not actually an alum, but I’m going to hit one for the game this evening (and hopefully will be able to take my girlfriend next week; as a non-fan, she’d rather watch a game in a bar than on my computer).
