Okay, you tell me if this is a red flag or not:

Clawfense’s first game in Bowling Green: 31-14 win over Troy…

QB Tyler Sheehan: 32 of 44, 339 yards, 2 TD 1 INT

BGSU ran for only 50 yards

Clawson

Isn’t a bad coach, I don’t think. With the right players he can work. He did good @ Richmond.

Well, I don’t know if he understands how it works vs the Big Boyz.

He's back where he belongs

Out of a BCS conference. Those stats are about as meaningful as BJ Coleman’s.

by rblakeh on Sep 3, 2009 10:15 PM EDT up reply actions

Oh, wow.

Here’s a story on that. A week or two ago, the Sports Animal had a sports reporter on who covers Bowling Green and Toledo football. He said that Clawson does not flip the offensive line.

Repeat: No line flipping.

Evidently, that was an experiment he ran with UT.

You can see why I didn’t run with it when I couldn’t get a recording of the interview.

by David Hooper on Sep 3, 2009 10:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Yep

the rushing yardage makes sense. The QB stat line just makes me worry about Crompton more than anything else…but they were playing Troy and we’re playing WKU, so I’ll get my answers then

by Will Shelton on Sep 3, 2009 10:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Then again,

BGSU had their starting qb return from the previous year. That was supposed to make a pretty big difference for some reason.

Best info I've seen on this

Is in Clay Travis’s book, and in this excerpt:

" I have pieced together a list that I believe to be accurate. I believe Hamilton met in person with Troy Calhoun of Air Force, Turner Gill of Buffalo, Brian Kelly of Cincinnati, Gary Patterson of TCU, and conducted an interview over the phone with Mike Leach from Texas Tech. Hamilton was also scheduled to meet with Will Muschamp of Texas, but Muschamp signed a coach-in-waiting deal four days before his face-to-face interview with Hamilton. Per sources, Troy Calhoun of Air Force was the number two choice. "

Indeed

It could’ve easily gotten them 7, but it did set the tone. The remaining question is whether or not these mistakes will wreck the tone. 0 points after the 2 yard line is impressively bad. USC anyone?

There was a good point in that sideline interview.

Is there any other team in the nation that loses as much relevance in their first loss as does Boise State?

One loss for them, no matter who it is, and they go from BCS-worthy to maybe #20 in the nation.

Born in Salt Lake City.

But we moved when I was one year old, so it really doesn’t count. When people ask where I grew up, I claim Oklahoma. Reluctantly.

by danmarcel on Sep 4, 2009 12:06 AM EDT up reply actions

Although

at this point I’ve been in Knoxville over half my life, so I think I’m getting pretty darn close to native status.

Seriously?

You going to the game on Sat.?

by David Hooper on Sep 4, 2009 12:09 AM EDT up reply actions

I am!

Was able to con my family into giving me tickets for my birthday (September 10th, Apple store gift certificates preferred please). Section AA, Row 26, seat something or other. I’ll be the sober one.

by danmarcel on Sep 4, 2009 12:10 AM EDT up reply actions

Section GG, Row 17, 6-8

I’ll be the one taking taking his daughters to the bathroom during the most important parts of the game.

On Volquest boards

There’s some “See, Fulmer didn’t let Clawson run the full offense!” going around. Good times, as expected.

I'll apologize to Clawson personally

when BG whups up on someone a bit more intimidating than Troy.

Sorry.

Can’t do it. Not that I blame him fully, but seriously.

There are a couple of rules changes this year that will be interesting to see how they play out.

The linemen downfield rule is one that I think is going to cause trouble if it’s not applied evenly across all the conferences.

by danmarcel on Sep 4, 2009 12:42 AM EDT reply actions

I think

the first time an important defensive player gets ejected for what would’ve been a clean hit 15 years ago, that’ll be interesting

by Will Shelton on Sep 4, 2009 12:43 AM EDT up reply actions

Especially if it's Eric Berry.

The UT blogosphere will erupt, erupt I say, in a great wailing and gnashing of teeth.

In other news

Why am I incapable of hitting reply instead of making a new post? I blame the crappy football tonight for melting my brain.

by danmarcel on Sep 4, 2009 12:45 AM EDT reply actions

For reals.

I understand early season rust, but this is ludicrous.

by danmarcel on Sep 4, 2009 12:46 AM EDT up reply actions

I also don't remember

an opening night where I saw two head coaches immediately jump to the front of the hot seat watch list.

by danmarcel on Sep 4, 2009 12:48 AM EDT up reply actions

Well that didn't work.

I’m thinking theyre gonna regret not having those 3 points.

by danmarcel on Sep 4, 2009 12:50 AM EDT reply actions

Why not kick the field goal?

And why run that play on 4th and 1? That’s poor play calling on the safety and on that one, you’re making the back do too much

by Will Shelton on Sep 4, 2009 12:51 AM EDT reply actions

I understand you're feeling froggy in the second half

but you had 14 yards of offense in the first half. Take your three points, make it a one possession game, and tell your defense to cowboy up. Lots of time left.

by danmarcel on Sep 4, 2009 12:52 AM EDT reply actions

Sigh

Oregon keeps hanging around just enough to keep me from going to bed

by Will Shelton on Sep 4, 2009 1:06 AM EDT reply actions

A: Lack of sleep, and 2: Because I skipped sleep to watch this comedy of errors.

by danmarcel on Sep 4, 2009 1:07 AM EDT up reply actions

Though it got somewhat better in the second half

These numbers are still atrocious:

4 first downs, 128 total yards, 38:04 to 16:23 time of possession

34,000 people in an open-ended stadium

and the Oregon O-line had to hold hands to get the snap count?

by danmarcel on Sep 4, 2009 1:19 AM EDT reply actions

Boise may have won the battle

but with this performance they’ll lose the war in terms of national perception…this was supposed to be their biggest chance to make a statement, and I’m not sure this performance qualifies.

Oh well…enjoyed it, all.

by Will Shelton on Sep 4, 2009 1:22 AM EDT reply actions

Holy crap!

Did anyone else see Blount go postal on Boise State, the cops, and his own fans? To their credit, the Oregon blog is roundly denouncing it.
